Therefore, this study intends to identify factors affecting effectiveness of facilities management in the case of Commercial Bank of Ethiopia. Descriptive research method particularly survey design approach was adopted for the study. The survey was conducted with Head office staffs of Commercial Bank of Ethiopia using questionnaire. The study used a two stage disproportionate stratified random sampling technique to select 180 representative samples from the total population. A Balanced Score Card concept was used to determine the existing level of effectiveness of facilities management. With support of IBM SPSS 20, a descriptive statistical analysis was conducted to generate the results. The study findings show that Facility Management had not given due regard to cost effectiveness & quality in obtaining goods and services, it has no consistency in ensuring demand will be met satisfactorily and economically, it does not have a systematic measurement for its internal processes to check and ensure quality outputs, and it does not have a disciplined organizational learning system that effectively captures internal & external best practices & lessons learned from operations. This indicates that the current level of facility management is less effective when compared to where it supposed to be. According to this study findings, the most important issues in assessment of the level of effectiveness of existing facility management and determination of those factors affecting FM effectiveness is to streamline the root causes for this level of effectiveness. In this case findings suggest that Facility Management of CBE needs to control and properly manage these eight critical success factors such as:- Leadership, Facility Strategic & Operational Planning, Customer Focus, Process Management, Assessment & Information Analysis, and Development & Management of Human Resources, Performance Result and Supply Chain Management in way that the process improves its performance and get benefited through process efficiency & effectivenessItem Effect of Cold Chain Management Practices on Availability of Vaccines: The Case of Health Centers under Addis Ababa City Administration Health Bureau(Addis Ababa University, 2016-05) Bacha, Tiya; Ensermu, Matiwos (PhD)This research was designed to assess the effect of cold chain management practices on availability of vaccines: the case of health centers under Addis Ababa city administration health bureau. The study used a quantitative methodology with explanatory study design to generate answers to the research questions. Primary data were collected through questionnaire from cold chain responsible personnel in selected health centers. To determine the sample size for selecting health centers the researcher employed a sample determination formula developed by Cochran in 1963. In order to select the respondents, the study used probability sampling method specifically simple random sampling. Accordingly, an aggregate of 71 respondents were selected and participated in this study and out of these, data were obtained from 62 respondents. Data collected through questionnaire were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency and mean. As an aside, correlation was used so as to assess the relationship between cold chain management practices and availability of vaccines. Multiple regression equation was used to test the hypothesis of research. The findings of the study revealed that all the components of cold chain management practices and also availability of vaccines were rated average except information system. The regression analysis revealed that storage and distribution practices have significant positive effect on the availability of vaccines. On the other hand technical capacity and information system were found to have no significant effect on the availability of vaccines. In order to improve the availability of vaccines in the health centers the researcher recommend to FMOH and other concerning bodies to focus on all distribution and storage practices. Among the recommendations, using electronic databases such as Health Commodities Management Information System (HCMIS), accelerating the transition of vaccine supply chain responsibility from the Federal Ministry of Health to the Pharmaceuticals Fund and Supply Agency, purchasing more cold chain equipments are some to mention. On top of that, the researcher recommend others to conduct similar research by expanding their scope to include private and other governmental health facilities and also to find out actual vaccine wastageItem Factors Affecting Supply Chain Performance in Construction Sector: the Case of RAMA Construction PLC(Addis Ababa University, 2017-01) Amare, Mulugeta; Ensermu, Mathewos (PhD)This research aims at assessing factors that affect supply chain performance in the construction sector, the case of RAMA Construction PLC, in Ethiopia. Primary type of data was collected with the help of standard questionnaires and semi structured interview. In order to examine the relationships between the variables, Pearson’s correlation and multiple linear regression analysis were used. The research comes up with the following findings. Although strategic supplier partnership is the key factor that has a strong positive relationship and highest effect on supply chain performance followed by customer relationship and information sharing in this study, the level of practice is not at a strong level yet. Furthermore, the result from the interview confirms that ethio telecom has supply chain management challenges related to inventory management, delivery & customer response time, inadequate planning, and communication. The supply chain management practice of ethio telecom is weak; it is not well managed, and implemented to get the maximum possible benefits resulting from effective supply chain management. Finally ethio telecom should engage in training of the work force and developing supply chain management skills through workshops and systematic training programmes and promote learning from relevant successful experiences in this areaItem Assessment of Logistics Practice in Project Context: The case of Ethio Telecom Expansion Project (TEP)(Addis Ababa University, 2017-04) Woubshet, Mesay; Ensermu, Matiwos (PhD)Most authors agree that project management is about achieving time, cost and quality targets, within the context of overall strategic and tactical client requirements, by using project resources. Some degree of risk always exists in the project, such as in technical, test, logistics, production, engineering, and other areas. With this in mind, this research aims to assess the logistics practice in project context, the case of Telecom Expansion Project (TEP). Based on ethio telecom’s logistics responsibility and literature reviews, the study identified four logistic factors for the assessment. These includes: warehouse, transportation, customs clearance and integration. The researcher used survey questionnaire and open ended interview to collect data from respondents that have been part of the expansion project. To select respondents, both probability and non-probability sampling techniques have been used. The data analysis is conducted through descriptive, correlation and multiple regression statistical technique using Statistical Package for the Social Science software (SPSS). The analysis and findings show that the transportation management system of the company has resulted in inefficient logistics practice. Warehouses were also inefficient in space utilization and performance and productivity of the warehouses suffered as the operations were manually carried. To some level, special permit from statutory bodies/agencies, and high loading down time at the port of Djibouti have been identified as unreasonable source of clearance delays. Further the finding revealed that project performance can be predicted from logistics factors. Finally the study recommended that consideration of logistics factors needs early involvement in the project design phase. Furthermore, since the telecom projects are relatively big and spend a lot of money on logistics, smaller improvements can generate large savings.Item Assessment of Supply Chain Management of Anti Retro-viral Drugs in Public Hospitals in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia(Addis Ababa University, 2017-05) Adugna, Meskerem; Assefa, Teklegiorgis(Associate Professor)Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is a disease caused by a retrovirus known as human immune deficiency virus (HIV). The virus attacks the immune system and weakens the body’s natural defense system to fight against infection. Highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) is the cornerstone of management of patients with HIV infection. This study therefore sought to assess supply chain management of ARV drugs in all public hospitals in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The study employed a facility based cross-sectional descriptive quantitative study and retrospective document review. The total sample size for the study was all public hospitals (censes). The study included heads of the pharmacy; ART dispenser and ART store manager/general store manager of the public hospitals as a target population of the study. The study specifically gathered data on quantification, ordering and receiving of ARV drugs, inventory management procedures, storage conditions and distribution of ARV drugs within all the public hospitals in Addis Ababa. Both structured questionnaires and observation check lists were used to gather these data and analysis were done using words, graphs, tables and statistics. Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20 was used for analysis. Overall, the mean age of public hospitals had an experience on ART service provision 15.6 years. The study revealed that 20(86.95%) of federal hospital and 14(82.5%) regional hospitals pharmacies properly report and have the record of patients by regimen data. And 25 (62.5%) of the hospitals were using a compensation of electronic dispensing tool (EDT) data, ART pharmacy data and ART clinic data for reporting. EDT: enables pharmacy staff at the facility level to manage patients, plan follow- ups and monitor stock levels; however among the respondents 16(69.56%) from federal hospitals and 14(82.35%) from regional hospitals have EDT tool but among this only 13(56.52%) federal hospitals and 11(64.7%) of regional hospitals electronic dispensing tools functional. 24(60%) used EDT for recording daily dispensing drugs, for trucking patients by regimen & following patient treatment. Almost above half 24(60%) of the hospitals used EDT for recording daily dispensing drugs, for trucking patients by regimen & following patient treatment. Of all the participants only 12(52%) of the respondents from federal hospitals and 10(58.82%) of the respondents from regional hospitals had ART training. The majority of the federal hospitals 5 (45.5%) and regional hospitals 6(54.55%) were able to submit the requisition and report of ARV drugs to Pharmaceutical Fund and Supply Agency according to the schedule. x An emergency order would be needed to avoid reaching a stock out before the end of the review period 20% of the federal hospitals and 15% of the regional hospitals had more than three emergency order of ARV drugs were placed on the past 6 months. 5(50%) of stock out of ARV drugs occurred in the hospitals due to not receiving the exact quantity they have ordered. Stock out was high for Nvp240ml in federal hospitals 3(60.0%). A well-organized storeroom will simplify a facility’s work; time will not be wasted trying to find needed supplies among ten hospitals 5(50%) of the hospitals have separated store for ARV drug and also 3(30%) of them have expiry date trucking chart. Logistics Management Information System (LMIS) is to support the management of essential pharmaceuticals like ARV drugs 5(21.5%) of federal hospitals and 6(35.3%) of regional hospitals have computer based LMIS. The remaining 18(78.3%) of federal hospitals and 11(64.7%) of regional hospitals have paper based LMIS; they used computerized EDT at dispensary and Health Commodities Management Information System (HCMIS) in the store. The study concludes that there were stock outs of ARV drugs which are an indicator of weak supply chain and also inadequate data on patient by regimen and stock status of ARV drugs. It was also noted that in majority of the cases the professionals were unable to handle the computerized LMIS, as desired. It was recommended for the hospitals handling ARV drugs to have adequate and reliable patient information and drug utilization data on hand and improve their storage conditions and prevent expiry and wastage of expensive ARV drugs.Item Factors Affecting Public Procurement Performance In Ethiopia: The Case Of Public Procurement And Property Disposal Services(Addis Ababa University, 2017-05) Aberu, Abebe; Ensermu, Mathewos (PhD)This Research Aims To Examine Factors Affecting Public Procurement Performance In Ethiopia: The Case Of Public Procurement And Property Disposal Services.
