This study has briefly analyzed and systematized relevant in/ormation in the review a/related literature. A descriptive survey research method was employed to conduct this study. Three government TVET colleges and two departments ji-OI11 each college were purposively selected ji-om Addis Ababa city administration. A representative sample 0/104 (86.67%) respondents \Vas involved in the study. Data were collected through questionnaire and interview. The data collected through questionnaire were analyzed using percentage and that 0/ interviews Ivere analyzed in narration. Results 0/ the study indicate that the participation o//emales within the two departments is vel)' low. Additionally, the implementation/ound not effective due to lack 0/ coordination, integration, orientation, training materials, blldget allocation, and illterest a/trainees. It is suggested that as there should be great effort and support to each other ji-om each individuals and concerned groups who are facilitators, implementers, and TVET providers. Additionally there should be fiiljillment 0/ conducive environment, availability 0/ text books; curriculum guides necessmy training materials, organized and standardized shops, willingness and interest a/trainees, and commitment a/the trainers.Item Assessment of Hindcring Factors to Usc Afarigna as a Medium of Instt'uction in Afm' Rcgional Statc: Thc Casc of Somc Selcctcd P"imary Schools(Addis Ababa University, 2011) Seid, Mohammed; Adugna, Getachew (PhD)Nowaday, the practice of mother tongue instruction is common in most of the regions in Ethiopia. Despite this Afar Regional State yet had not made it practical. Thus, the essence of this study was to assess hinderingfactors to use Afarigna as a medium of instruction in the Primmy Education System of the Region. Hence, Zone one, and three WoredasDubti, Aysaita and Afambo out of eight woredas in this zone, were selected purposively on the basis of physical accessibility, familiarity to the researcher and proximity to the regional center. Among 44 primmy schools in these woredas-seven (out of 21), four (out of 14), three (out of 9) i.e.14 primmy schools were selected from each woreda proportionally using simple random sampling technique due to homogeneity of the region. In employing a descriptive survey research method, the study made use of questionnaire, interview and focus group discussion to solicit information ji-om 94 teachers, 112 students, 28 parents, 14 school principals, eight Woreda and Regional Education Officials, two local linguists and two .Regional Government representatives. Besides, document reviews were made in collect daia. The quantitative daw collected using questionnaire was analyzed based on ji-equency counts and percentage and the qualitative data was analyzed by summarizing the words of respondents. Accordingly, the following major findings were obtained i) the absence of native primary teachers, lack of native curricular experts and lack of initiation and decision by the decision makers hampered to use Afarigna as a medium of instruction; ii) The legal policy and the development of the language (Afarigna) factors were found to have no hindrance to use Afarigna as a medium; iii) Afarigna as If medium at primary level was a highly well come and eagerly awaited issue among all parents, learners and teachers; iv)The existing situation in Afar region was found rich in terms of opportunities to use Afarigna as a Mol; and v)The ongoing efforts made t6 use Afarigna as a working language and school medium was deservedly considerable. Th~reajier, it was conch/ded that lack of decision and commitment of decision makers were the key inhibiting factors about the issue under consideration. Finally, the decision makers as well as those who involved in the education system at different level should be initiated and committed to implement the language policy in the region was recommended.Item An Assessment of Practices and Challenges of Distance Education in Ethiopia: in The Case of Ethiopian Civil Service and Alpha College of Distance Study(Addis Ababa University, 2008-01) Hundie, Tadesse; Adugna, Getachew (PhD)The intent of this study was to find out the practice and challenges of distance mode of teaching. The study was conducted with reference to Ethiopian Civil Service College and Alpha University College of Distance Studies. The researcher made A wassa and Debre Brehan as the sites of this study. A comparative case study method was used; questionnaires, interviews, observation and document analysis were employed for data gathering while learners, tutors, center coordinators and some documents were taken as sources of data. Then the collected data have been analyzed and the major findings spelled out. Accordingly, the distance education program has enabled adults to have access to education who otherwise couldn't join the higher institutions regular program due to various reasons. However, during the conduct of the distance program many challenges such as lack of trained man power, absence of various learning materials, absence of close follow- up to meet learners' interest, learners' financial constraints and lack of transportation and inconvenience of tutorial centers were observed. Finally, some important points of the study were summarized. And then the conclusion was drawn from it about the implementation of distance program. At the end some recommendations were madefor observed challenges or problems of the distance program.Item Bilingual Instruction: The Practice of Using Amharic and Englih as A Medium of Instruction to Teach One Subject in Some Selected Private First Cycle Primary Schools of Yeka Sub City in Addis Ababa(Addis Ababa University, 2007-07) Jemere, Getasew; Adugna, Getachew (PhD)The purpose of the research was to assess the practice and perceptions of bilingual instruction in five sample private primary schools [Neway Youth Academy, Deleverance, Lucy Academy, Blue Bird and Majic Carpet] in Yeka Sub City in Addis Ababa City Administration. To this effect, the research attempted to examine: the how and why private schools teach one subject using Amharic and English as a medium. of instruction to teach one subject and the availability of appropriate and sufficient resources and the perception and role of major stakeholc;iers towards the program. And the major challenges encountered. To address the basic questions of the study, descriptive survey method was employed. Thus, questionnaires, semi structured interview questions, focus group . discussions; observations of classrooms, relevant and necessary document analysis were used. The data gathered were analyzed both in quantitative and -qualitative terms. To actualize the research, Yeka Sub City in Addis Ababa City Administration and five schools in this sub city were selected purposefully. Hence, sixty students, thirty parents, five schools principals, three educational supervisors which add up to a total of 98 participants were consulted to give their responses. - The results of the study revealed that the schools were not using the instructional language policy of Addis Ababa City Administration; due attention were not given in sensitizing school principals and teachers on instructional language selection and usage; education experts and schools have no idea on models of bilingual education; bilingual subjects' textbooks were not prepared in one text and also books were not adapted to the Ethiopian context. Further more, schools were found different in programming and allotment of p eriods of bilingual subjects. Finally, the study came across that, both human and material recourses were not developed to carry out bilingual education in the schools. Based on the findings and conclusions, recommendations that should be considered in the implementation of bilingual education were forwarded: It is necessary to develop clear language policy and sensitize stakeholders on the isSue of bilingual education; both human and material resources should be developed to carry out bilingual education program; deep and thorough study has to be conducted as to when and how to start bilingual education. Since English has a major role in higher education of the country and world wide communication, due emphasis should be given to this languageItem The Challenges and Opportunities Non-Formal Basic Education Program Implementation in South Eastern Zone of Tigray Regional State(Addis Ababa University, 2010-07) Meles, G/egziabher; Adugna, Getachew (PhD)The pwpose of this study was to identify and analyze the major challenges and opportunities in implementing NFBE program in South Eastern Zone ofTigray Regional State. A descriptive survey research method was employed for the purpose. Ten NFBE centers ji'om two weredas (Enderta and Degua Tembien) were selected as subjets of the studyA total of 128 respondents, 60 adult learners,30 facilitators, 5 supervisors, 8 Tabia managers, 2 sector heads, 2 education experts, 20 non-participant adults,l education office head, participated as source of data. Pwposive, accidental, random and availability sdmpling were used as sampling techniques. The data were gathered by means of ji'om document analysis, observation, questionnire and interviews. In analyzing the data percentage, mean and rank order were used. The findings of the study indicates the existence of both opportunities and challeng The involvement of adult learners in the selecton of NFBE centers, deciding the schedule and ji'equent exercise of learner centered approach were found to be major opportunity of the program. The identified problems were lack of community parficipation in preparing a plan and selection of facilitators, the absence of training and paymel1l for jhcilitators, inadllqllacy oj educational resources and facilities, low enrollmel1l rate, high dropout rate, poor utilization of teaching aids, lack ofmonitiring and evalliatiol1. Hence, if can be conluded that the NFBE program in South Eastern Zone of Tigray was highly marginilized. Therefore, it is recommended that the 11'ereda education office sufficient should provide aducate material and technical assistance to the centers. There must be propel' monitoring and evaluafion of the over all activities of the centers with active involvement of stakeholders. To ensure fhe sustainability of the program, fhe wereda education office have to negotiatew with NCOs and local communities to support the program with adequate financial resources.Item Challenges of Parental Involvement in Students' Learning At Boneya Boshe Woreda of East Wollaga Zone(Addis Ababa University, 2018-06) Negewo, Sekata; Adugna, Getachew (PhD)The objective of this study was investigating the practices of parental involvement on their children’s academic achievement, and identifying the challenges they face in the process their parental involvement in primary schools of Bonneya Boshe District. Descriptive design was used with both quantitative and qualitative methods. Twenty one primary schools are found in the district, where five were seleced by simple lottery method sample. The sample teachers 99 (100%) and 5(100%) school principals, were selected employing availability sample techniques. Additionally, 162 students were selected by purposeful sampling technique. Finally, 162 parents’ of students were included by using purposive sampling techniques. The instruments of data collection were questionnaires and semi structured interview. Then, the information gathered through closed-ended questionnaire was analyzed quantitatively using frequency, percentage, mean score and standard deviation while the information gathered through interview and open-ended questions were analyzed qualitatively through narration for the purpose of triangulation. The findings of the study indicated low level of parents’ involvement in students’ academic achievement such as, follow up of their children whether they are going to school or not, in providing basic supplementary learning materials and in guiding or helping their children in doing homework or assignment. Regarding the practices of parents – teachers partnerships on students’ learning; Parent- teacher relation was loosely integrated; there is a limited flow of information from the school to parent; schools didn’t invite parents to visit and give suggestions on teaching learning process; parents were lacked clear information about their children academic progress from the school. Regarding challenges, parents low awareness, low commitments of school leaders in implementation, school principals’ insufficient skills and low educational level of parents were the major ones. In general, as the finding of the study revealed that involvement of parents in their children’s learning in the school and at home is not effective. Therefore, it is recommended that parents should support their children at home and in school; school principals should work in collaboration with KETP and PTA; conducting parent- School meeting regularly. Finally, Woreda education offices in collaboration with school principals need to Work efficiently to enhance awareness of parents. Key words: parents’ involvement and academic achievement.Item A Comparative Study of Female Participation in Business and Industrial Construction Fields in Entoto and Wingate Tvet Colleges in Addis Ababa(Addis Ababa University, 2011-05) Haileyesus, Fetlework; Adugna, Getachew (PhD)Item Comparative Study on Classroom Social Interaction in Government and Private Preparatory Schools: The Case of Addis Ababa City Administration(Addis Ababa University, 2008-06) Ketema, AYchiluhim; Adugna, Getachew (PhD)The main objective of this study is to identify and compare the level of classroom social interaction in government and private preparatory schools of Addis Ababa city Administration. For the study the researcher took three government and three private preparatory schools by simple random sampling and used 12 classrooms for data collection taking two sections at random from each setting. The observed classes geography. history and Amharic classes are selected purposefully because these subjects are non plasma sUbjects in both the settings. The method employed is mixed method (both quantitative and qualitative! and comparative study design was used for the research. Data were collected by using observation, questionnaire and interview. The data was analysed by simple statistical methods (percentage and ratio! for the quantitative datct and by categorizing in to their implications for the qualitative data. The main out comes of the study ar~ teachers in the government schools have a better understanding of the contribution of classroom social interaction for the teaching learning process, teachers dominates the classroom social interaction in both settings but in terms of exercising the indirect teaching behaviour; facilitating collaborative/active learning method and giving considerable time for students participation, teachers of government schools are better than teachers of private schools. In genera~ the overall classroom social interaction in government schools is better than that of the private schools. The gender issue is also treated in the study and the findings shows that in the government schools male students interact more than female students, whereas in the private schools female students interact more than male students. Moreover; in the stUdy the researcher recommended that the concerned bodies,· to upgrade teachers by arranging training sessions, arranging experience sharing programme among teachers of the two settings and motivating educators to conduct researches on the issue of classroom social interaction.Item The Contribution of Tvet towards Entrepreneurship Among Selam Tvet College Entrepreneur Graduates in Addis Ababa(Addis Ababa University, 2010-06) Engdawork, Etaferahu; Adugna, Getachew (PhD)The main purpose of this study was to examine the contribution of TVET Training towards entrepreneurship (Self- employment) form the prospective entrepreneur TVET graduates of Selam TVET as a particular case. To this end, an attempt was made to look into the status of entrepreneur graduates in particular reference with this entrepreneurship; the major challenges the entrepreneur graduates confronted, the situation (success or failure) of entrepreneur graduates, the hope of TVET griiduates regarding entrepreneurship. Qualitative case study research method was employed to assess the contribution of TVET training towards entrepreneurship. The participants of the study were entrepreneur graduates of Selam TVET college, Dean, Vice Dean, entrepreneurship course instructor, two counselors and one TVET expert. Accordingly, the respondent sampling was carried out through purposive and available sampling techniques. Information is obtained using interviews, observations and document reviewing. The data collected analyzed using narrative description and interpretation. The result showed that the contribution of TVET towards entrepreneurship was remarkable. The finding of the investigation indicated the entrepreneur graduates got quality training on basic entrepreneurship skill, except one the rest of entrepreneur graduates of Selam TVET college have good economic status, confronting challenge like insufficient working capital, inconvenient working site, lack of customer. There was a linkage between the training and labor market skills; Apprenticeship training helped graduates to become successful. Entrepreneur graduates missed vocational guidance service; there are wide prospects of TVET graduates to enter towards entrepreneurship.Item The Current Practice of Pre- School Education in Some Selected Weredas of North Western Zone of Tigray(Addis Ababa University, 2010-06) Abirham, Haile Gebreselassie; Adugna, Getachew (PhD)The purpose of this study was to assess the role of the regional government and the current practices of pre-school education in three selected Wer edas of North-western Zone of Tigray Region. To conduct the study, descriptive survey method was employed. To effect this, out of two Zero-classes and 13 KGs in the three selected Weredas, two private KGs were selected by purposive sampling technique due to the presence of large number teachers in Endaselassie Wereda. Moreover, three Kindergartens were selected from Endaselassie Wereda using simple random sampling technique (lottery method) of which two were private and one government Kindergartens. Besides, out of the two Zero-classes, one Zero-class was included in the study using 10llelY method from the mentioned Wereda. Furthermore, Two Kindergartens Ji"om Sheraro Wereda and one KindergartenJi"om Medebay Zana Wereda were selected by available sampling technique as sample pre-schools. AI/teachers including principals thirty-nine in the sample pre-schools were used as subject of the study. In addition to this, 18 children's parents (1Fh o h(1 "'? Im-q- scho o! age chjJdr en q,'?,"0!! ed /,'; pre-sc l:cc!) we r e se lected by acciden tal sa mp ling ' technique and 9 parents (who have pre-school age children but not enrolled in pre-school) were selected by purposive sampling with the guidance of principals. One Regional and three Wereda level Education office experts were selected on purposive basis. Four types of data gathering instruments (questionnaire, interview, observation checklists, and document analysis) were employed. Pilot test was conducted in ten pre-school teachers and the reliability of the instrument (questionnaire) was computed using Cronbach's alpha. Accordingly, the pilot test result was 0.77. Based on this result four items were modified. Finally, quantitative data were analyzed using percentage and the qualitative data were presented in words to supplement the data obtained through quantitative methods. Findings made clear that almost al/ the studi€d pre-schools have adequate indoor and outdoor equipments as the standards set by Tigray Education Bureau; most pre-schools (91.2%) have moderate conduciveness of classrooms for teaching-learning processes; 82.6% of teachers have trained in pre-school teaching; the involvement of parents in pre-school were moderate (55.9%). These all encourages the practices of pre-school education. However, pre-school education was not practiced as stated in the policy due to lack of separate school environment, poor sanit(JJY facilities of pre-schools; poor organization of materials and equipments in classrooms; low opportunities of in-service training of teachers (100%); scarce of assistant teachers as well as lack of training (67.8%); less allention and support of re gional governments. The subjects of the study were 132 female students of the colleges, three deans, five instructors, two individllals from women affairs bureau, one the college women affairs IInit and one vocational counselors of the college. Simple random sampling methods were used to selectstlldents, and the remaining officials are selected by using purposive sampling techniques. For the purpose of the study, descriptive survey method \\las employed in order to get a clear picture about the faclors. The dala for the sludy was obtained from primwy and secondary sOllrces. The primary data was collected through questionnaires and interviews. Both open-ended and close-ended questionnaires were set and administered. 1n addition to this, documents, strategic plan and different published and unpublished /l/aterials were used as secondary so urces. Tables, mean, grand mean and percentage follo\lled by descriptive statements was used 10 analyze the collected data. Finally, the researcher forwarded the possible recommendation. Accordingly the research depicted that female students participation is affected by parent related factors like (family educational background, lack of moral and absenteeism), unavailability of teaching material and infrastructllre , lack of mvareness and harmfllitraditional practices. Generally, in Openo TVET college the number of female students is almost negligible as compared to business stlldents. Hence, it is recommended that the college has to create a mechanism to aware the societies of Gambella aboUi TVET and the labora/ories and workshop should be equipped with the necessary materials.Item Factors Affecting Self- Employment of Technical and Vocational Education and Training Graduates: The Case of St. Mary's University College(Addis Ababa University, 2011-06) Tesfaye, Fisseha; Adugna, Getachew (PhD)This research aimed at identifoing the factors affecting self-employment of TVET graduates considering St. Mary's University College (SMUC) as a case. The approach of the research design was a survey method involving both qualitative and quantitative description. To this end, questionnaire and interview methods of data collection were employed. Stratified and systematic random sampling technique was used to select respondents for questionnaire from the target population of four batch graduates. Interview respondents were four Entrepreneurship course instructors from the institute under study. Thus, it is revealed that 77.7 % of the TVET graduates of SMUC were wage employed and only 7.4% were self-employed. The rest 14.9% were unemployed. Therefore, SMUC is successful in producing demand-driven skilled manpower to the labor market though self-employment rate is very low. As regard to the factors affecting selfemployment, it was found that 88.3% of the graduates and most of the instructors responded as 'lack of start-up capital ' that led the graduates to wage employment. Hence, the graduates could not access the credit services opportunities provided by the support service system. In addition, lack of market familiarity, lack of viable concept of business operation, and lack of experience in managing and running a business were the other factors mentioned by the graduates whereas the instructors believed that graduates ' attitude, lack of self-determination and lack of risk taking behavior were factors for wage employment. Graduates also mentioned hard work (100%), need to achieve life goal (97.3%) and self-determination (96.6%) as the first three importantfactors of personality traits for self-employment. All the interview respondents agreed that the trainers lack entrepreneurial training skills. Vocational guidance and counseling service was also rated medium and below by 58.7% of the graduates that implies weak service. Based on the findings and conclusion, solutions were recommended to the concerned stakeholders.Item Factors Affecting Utilization of Public Libraries for Adults' Lifelong Learning}n Garno Gofa Zone(Addis Ababauniversity, 2012-06) Abiso, Admasu; Adugna, Getachew (PhD)public libraries and its challenges in selected woredas of Gamoa Gofa Zone. Based on this related literatures were reviewed. The research design employed was descriptive survey under quantitative and qualitative methods. The main data collection topi was one set of questionnaire for adults who utilize public libraries. In addition, interv? ant:i----/ document analysis were used to support data obtained through the questionpaire. Data were gathered from adults, librarians, woreda educational experts and admitlistrators. In order to select sample areas and sample population purposive, availability and accidental sampling techniques were employed. Non-parametric statistical tools mean and qualitative approaches were used in order to analyze and interpret data. The study revealed that the majority of users were male students whose information needs were basically for academic pUipose. The available resources in the libraries were inadequate and in most cases not suitable in a particular situation. Additionally, the main problems related to the utilization of public libraries were: absence of trained librarians, poor facil ities of libraries, shortage of recent materials, lack of Internet and reprographic material access, lack of willingness of educational experts to support public libraries. Furthermore, it was found out that there were problems related to scarcity of financial support and lack of willingness of adults to read different books that credited to poor utilization of public library services. As the result, the current state of the public libraries in study area isfarfrom what they should be. Improvement is needed in utilization and in increasing the funding, providing recent materials and raising the awareness of public library services to the population. Hence, for the success of public library services, the respective government bodies, community and other concerned stakeholders should accomplish their responsibilities in organized manner to promote adults' lifelong learning in public librariesItem Factors Influencing the Utilzation of Reading Tasks in Grade Seven English Teaching: The Case of Four Selected Primary Schools in Kombolcha Woreda(Addis Ababa University, 2009-07) Mengistu, Mekonen; Adugna, Getachew (PhD)The purpose of this study was to examine factors influencing the utilization of reading tasks in grade seven English teaching in four selected primary schools in Kombolcha Woreda. To this end, a descriptive survey method was employed to conduct the research in four second cycle primary schools from eleven schools in the Woreda . Within these schools, all English language teachers of grade seven who are five in numbers, a total of 138 students were taken as actual sources of information. Teachers selected using available sampling technique, where as students that filled the questionnaire and those who participated in the focus group discussion selected using simple random and purposive sampling techniques. Questionnaire, interview, focus group discussion and classroom observation were the data collection instruments used to obtain information from the sources . The data were analyzed using percentage and descriptive statements. The result of the study revealed that most of the reading tasks indicated in the curricular materials not utilized as properly as they intended to practice. Teachers and students extent of the utilization of the reading tasks found to be not more than "sometimes level" on most of the tasks. As a result, the tasks like introducing the reading title, predicting the content of the passage, understanding the purpose of reading, student-silent independent reading, skimming/scanning reading, guessing meaning ji-om the context, discussing the passage related with other issues and integrating the other language skills with reading tasks were not utilized effectively to practice reading skills. Among the various techniques presented in reading tasks, individual work dominated both at pre and at post reading phases. Teachers utilized different teaching techniques for a single reading task The finding of the study showed that teachers did not use the appropriate reading techniques to help students at each reading phase. Respondents also revealed that the major factors that very greatly influence the utilization of reading tasks. They were lack of motivation of teachers and students, poor teaching strategy, students limited. vocabulary knowledge, lack of habit to read in leisure time, lack of reading skills, unfamiliar topics and complex sentences. The study used to descriptive case study method, because it was found convenient to represent existing situation about implementation of learner support services. The research included 2 distance education institutions; the study participants were selected by Probability (simple random sampling) and non probability (purposive sampling). 523 representative respondents composed of 494 learners, 25 tutors and 2 coordinators and 2 administrators. Three data gathering tools namely questioners, interview and observation check list had been employed in order to gather necessary data of the study which were composed of close ended and open ended items were applied in the research. The data gathered through interview observation and questionnaire was processed through three concurrent flows of activity of the qualitative analysis system which include data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing. The Major findings of this study include delay of modules and lost course materials, less learner’s participation on face to face tutorial program, lack of library, lack of guidance and counseling services and inadequacy of administrative support. The study also found that week follow up, support and feedback system on the assignment and examination. Lack of training opportunity for tutor and coordinators were the major challenges. Questionnaire, interviews, observation checklists as well as document analysis were made. In this endeavor, a descriptive survey research method was employed .Regarding the selections of the trainees and trainers a stratified simple random sampling technique was used where as regarding the rVEr deans, regional education Bureau rVEr experts and the two rVEr colleges a purposive sampling technique was used. rhe study revealed that the trainees' academic performance was affected by many and interrelated institutional factors. Consequently, it has indicated that the trainees' academic performance was marked by lack of awareness on the part of the regional education Bureau rVEr experts and the deans of the respective rVEr colleges. Interviews of Regional Curriculum Department head and curriculum experts of the department who participated in the preparation of the textbqoks were applied as a supplementing procedure. The appropriateness of the textbooks) layout) objective-content association) the conditions of illustrations and gender issues were coded and analyzed. The findings of this study showed that all contents are in harmony with objectives set in the respective syllabi. The illustrations are also in harmony with the contents and some of them lack clarity. The whole textbooks are prepared on the basis of self directing modes of activities. However, it is found that the typographic layouts and page setups of these textbooks show insignificant variation with standards set by EMPDA. Significant encouraging attempts and efforts have been shown to maintain gender balance, but it is found that this balance is not maintained perfectly throughout the textbooks.
