Abstract
The intent of this study was to find out the practice and challenges of distance mode of teaching.
The study was conducted with reference to Ethiopian Civil Service College and Alpha University
College of Distance Studies. The researcher made A wassa and Debre Brehan as the sites of this
study.
A comparative case study method was used; questionnaires, interviews, observation and
document analysis were employed for data gathering while learners, tutors, center coordinators
and some documents were taken as sources of data. Then the collected data have been analyzed
and the major findings spelled out. Accordingly, the distance education program has enabled
adults to have access to education who otherwise couldn't join the higher institutions regular
program due to various reasons.
However, during the conduct of the distance program many challenges such as lack of trained
man power, absence of various learning materials, absence of close follow- up to meet learners'
interest, learners' financial constraints and lack of transportation and inconvenience of tutorial
centers were observed.
Finally, some important points of the study were summarized. And then the conclusion was
drawn from it about the implementation of distance program. At the end some recommendations
were madefor observed challenges or problems of the distance program.
