Providing psychological and social support can help the infected people and their care givers to cope up effectively with each stage of the infection and enhances quality of li fe. In light of this, the main objective of this study was to examine and evaluate the role of Community Care Coalitions (CCCs) in providing psychosocial supports to people infected with and affected by HIV / AIDS in two selected woredas of Mekelle City. The research design employed was both qualitative and quantitative approaches. Participants were selected using both probability and non probability sampling techniques. Stratified sampling and purposive sampling techniques were used. Survey questionnaires, Focus Group Discussions and key informant interviews were data collection methods. The reliability of the survey questions was checked with Cronbach's alpha and measures of equivalence item analysis methods in pilot testing and found to be strong consistent(r=0.78). The content validity of the items was also checked by the inter judge rater professionals and found to be relevant. Data obtained from survey questionnaires was ana lyzed quantitatively using Pearson product coefficient, mean, standard deviation, two sample t-test, multiple regression, and AN OVA. In doing so, STATA V.ll.l soft ware was us ed. Qualitative data was analyzed thematically in line with key elements of ca re and support to PLWHA and vulnerable groups as identified by World Health Organization. The major finding indicates, provision of PSS for PLWHA and their fa milies is found to be very essential. The role of such community based care and support networks also play paramount significance in addressing the need of these target group. The provision of psychosocial support as one separate care and support package within CCCs, create significant difference between beneficiaries level of service satisfaction, relationship between service providers and receivers for the t- value is less than the P, 0.05 with 95% CI. This easy could help social workers to undertake further researches about psychosocial support to vu lnerable group that comes from home and community based supports. As the primary objective of CBR is to ensure the equal participation and the right to use the community resources, the study tried to assess the impact of the rehabilitation on the social and psychological situations, their independent living through income generation schemes, mobility skills and participation in the program. To do this, 16 participants were selected purposively on the basis of • The information that they have, about CBR services, • Ability to express their ideas, the caregivers' relationship that they have with the PWDs, • And having received services at least for six years. To this effect, the primary sources of the data were five people with different disabilities, six caregivers, two school teachers and three CBR workers including the manager of the organization. Written documents were also used as secondary data sources. To collect the necessary data semi structured interview, FGD, observation checklist and document analysis guide have been used. After the interview was made with eleven participants separately, the FGD held at AbbayMinich school with five discussants. Then, the data was analyzed qualitatively. As it is shown in the finding, prior to the coming of Handicap National to the sub-city, the attitude of the community towards PWDs was not positive. Many of the PWDs therefore were hurt both socially and psychologically. However, for the past eight years, using mass media, workshops, dramas, coffee-ceremony and other activities, the Handicap National has brought a significant change in the life of PWDs. Although there are still under achievements in regard to vocational rehabilitation and participation of the clients, changes have been observed in relation to the social, psychological, educational developments of the PWD who had received services from the center and the awareness of the community. Various studies have provided evidence of the importance of proper nutrition to the cognitive development of an individual which also affects their educational achievements. This thesis assessed the effects of undernourishment on the academic performance of “Atse libnedingel” governmental primary school students, in Addis Ababa, “Kechene” slum and the factors of undernourishment. Methodologically, the research is informed by qualitative case study approach. The study was undertaken utilizing an in-depth interview and document review. Thirteen students from 12-18 age intervals were purposively selected and additionally six teachers and school principals were interviewed. Information of the academic performances was extracted from the students‟ report cards, teachers‟ evaluation of the students, their class activities, study habit, attention and memory in the class and by their interaction with their peers and teachers. Major findings in this study are, the undernourishment of the students was significantly related with income and occupation of the parent, household size and sex of the household head and undernourishment of the students shows an effect on their score and grade, memory and attention, interaction with their teachers and peers and on their school activities. Improving the socio-economic status of the parents and school feeding program will lend a helping hand in the academic performance of the students. The objective of this study is to explore attributes (positive and negative) of reunification on psychological and social lives of sexually abused and returned home children. The assessment of this qualitative study tried to identify and listed the psychological and social problems. The study uses case study method, apply semistructured in-depth interview, and collect data from reunified female children who faced the problem. The study uses purposive sampling technique and a total of eleven return home children. The major concerns like reason of run away, psychological and social problems, and feelings of family members and neighbors in relation to reunification is discussed. It identifies major psychosocial problems that those children faced during reunification and its effects on their psychological health and social relation. The data collected from the in-depth interview, discussion and documentation were narrated and analyzed. The findings showed that reunifications results shorter and longer term psychological and social problems and the children shows feeling of fear, depression and poor peer relationship. Generally, the assessment underlies the need to give attention to those children who are facing the problem and the alternative child care system (reunification). Future researchers should prefer to aim on gaining knowledge on the long-term effects of post reunification programs. So social workers could resolve this limitation by adding specifies when interviewing participants. The study was concerned about the poor, voiceless, discriminated and for those who are living in continuous injustice. So mobilizing the community through effective ways in assisting reunifying children to their family can be one of the ways that aim social work profession can be achievedItem Challenges and opportunities Learning through Information Communication Technology in Addis Ababa University: the Case of Students with Visual Impairment(Addis Ababa University, 2013-11) Abuhay, Almaz; Legesse, Mengistu (PhD)This study focused on examining challenges and opportunities of students with visual impairment in learning through information communication technology at Addis Ababa University. The study deployed qualitative design. To gather information both primary and secondary sources were used. For primary data two key informant interviews with Special Needs Support Office Coordinator and with Ethiopian National Association for the Blind Project Coordinator, ten in-depth interviews, and one focus group discussion with students with visual impairment were held. For secondary information different books, journals, and electronic sources, reports, program guidelines were used. The findings revealed that information and communication technology helps students with visual impairment to develop self-confidence in their academic life. It also helps them to serve as an interface to communicate with sighted persons. Students with visual impairment prefer Braille when they read during exam and focused reading time. On the other hand the findings revealed that shortage of computer to practice, shortages of Braille books, and inadequate training of the Job Access with Speech (JAwS) software, to utilize the software effectively. Even the existing trainings are given by people who are not professionally trained about the software. To curb the problem, Special Needs Support Office of the University along with other stakeholders needs to find a means. It is felt each student with visual impairment (SwVI) get a laptop as compensation like other sighted peers borrow a book from the book store or adding more computers in the computer laboratoryItem Comparative Study of Juvenile Delinquency between Addis Ababa and Out of Addis Ababa Raised Juveniles in Addis Ababa(Addis Ababa University, 2014-06) Wondimu, Betelehem; Legesse, Mengistu (PhD)The study is aimed at comparing and understanding juvenile delinquency between Addis Ababa Raised juveniles and juveniles who raised Out of Addis Ababa. In order to meet the objectives of the study, data were collected regarding the causes, types, current trends and intervention mechanism of juvenile delinquency. Data for the study were collected through closed ended questioners and key informant interview from delinquent juveniles found in the remand home and from investigative polices of four sub cities found in Addis Ababa. Accordingly, 25 among 41 questioners were administered for AAR and the rest 16 administered for OAAR juveniles. According to the study result, dysfunctional families, peer pressures and inability to attain basic needs are identified as causes for both groups to become delinquents. In addition, while failure of parental care referred as a special cause for AAR juveniles, street life is identified as a separate cause for OAAR juveniles‘ involvement in delinquency. Theft is also identified as a common type of delinquency committed by both groups though the type of the theft and its level are different between each groups. The study result also found that, juvenile delinquency is widening over time and community based correction mechanisms are highly recommended to tackle the problemItem Department of Psychology the Problems of Living as Persons With Visual Impairment in Hossana Town(Addis Ababa University, 2007-04) Kelbore, Argaw; Legesse, Mengistu (PhD)This study was undertaken to explore the living situations of persons with visual impairment in hosanna town. To this end, 20 persons with visual impairment, 30 officials (experts) from concerned organization, 2 religious leaders and 2 community elders purposely selected in all 3 kebele administration of Hossana town to gather information pertaining to the living situations of persons with visual impairment. Basic questions raised ·to address this issue include background information of the sample population, their current living conditions, social status, beliefs (views) external and internal locus of control, and other various factors that affect their living situations. The study used semi-structured, structured, open-ended interview questions and focus group discussion. Qualitative and quantitative methods were used to analyze the data . The result of the study indicated that 12 were illiterate individuals. where 14 of them happened to lead their life by begging. In addition to the economic hardship, segregation and stigmatization, negative attitudes (views) and stereotyped views are the major social problems encountered by visually impaired individuals. As it was found that majority of them suffer from high feeling of loneliness, helplessness and low self-esteem. Most of their problems raised due to lack of preventive measures, skill training, income generating programs, absence of medical services, special education services, ignorance of the people and low awareness. On the basis of the study findings, suggestions to improve the living situations of persons with visual impairments are providedItem Exploring Acadamic Barroers to Students with Disabilities at Addis Abeba University Main Campus(Addis Ababa University, 2014-06) Tessentu, Dawit; Legesse, Mengistu (PhD)The study aims to explore barrier to education for students with disabilities at Addis Ababa university main campus. A quantitative research employing a census or complete enumeration method was used to explore the major barrier students with disabilities face during their education at AAU. To this effect, a quantitative data was collected using structured questionnaires from 289 students with disabilities studying at the main campus of AAU. The finding of the study found a number of major barriers to education for students with disabilities. It was found that, SwD face barrier to education because of; negative attitude 78.9%, lack of educational material 66.1%, physical inaccessibility 46.4%, financial limitation 69.9%, uncooperative faculty member’s 49.1% inaccessible library and classroom building 81.8%. Student also experienced disability-related barriers in teaching and learning process these includes examination 64%, getting information 53.3% assignment 77.9%. Accordingly, policy responses, advocacy and awareness raising, financial support, course and lecture modification, provision of adequate assistive technology and educational material, mainstreaming disability issues in all departments and faculties, equipping disability center with adequate material are recommendedItem Exploring Community Based Organizations Efforts, Opportunities and Challenges in promoting the Well Being of AIDS orphans : a case in Zenebework Village ,Woreda 01,Kolfe Keranyo Sub City(Addis Ababa University, 2013-06) Bekele, Zewdie; Legesse, Mengistu (PhD)In Ethiopia, community based organizations, like idirs, play a great role in conducting care and support services to HIV/AIDS orphans. But little is known about how well the needs of HIV/AIDS orphans addressed and less has been documented about how effective their care and support programs . This study has explored how CBOS established in the study area carry out care and support services to HIV/AIDS orphans and dealt with the challenges they encountered. The study was conducted in Kolfe Keranyo Sub-city Woreda 01, locally known as Zenebework area. Qualitative research design, Purposive and Convenience Sampling techniques with Phenomenological approaches were used to conduct the study. The qualitative data collection methods like FGD and KII and participant observation were employed to collect data from HIV/AIDS orphans, non-orphaned children, care givers, governmental and non-governmental employees, school teachers .The findings of the study revealed that, communities can get involved in responding to HIV/AIDS orphans and development issues to sustain the care and support activities However ,the study showed that the program could not fulfill the needs of all categories of HIV/AIDS orphans due to limited resources of the community . The major conclusion of the study is that CBOS have an important role to play in the response to HIV/AIDS orphans if capacitated, and supported with sufficient resources. The study also recommends alternative care and support arrangements, utilizing local resources efficiently and effectively, building the capacity of idir leaders and creating networks among stakeholders engaged in the care and support activities in order to alleviate the problems of HIV/AIDS orphans. Basic questions were raised regarding the spread of drug abuse, its relationship with some variables of the study population such as family condition, peer influence, and level of academic performance and on drug abuse manner and its consequences. The study was carried out in Addis Ababa. The sample schools included were 325 students. To deal with the objectives and basic questions, mixed method design was employed. The instruments used to gather the required information for the study were questionnaire, focus group discussion guide and interview. The obtained data were analyzed through frequency, percentage and chi square. Based on the analysis, the following major findings were obtained: Alcoholic drinks, Khat, Shisha and cigarette were the main commonly consumed drugs both private and public secondary school students. Sex is associated with cigarette smoking. Male (20%) respondents smoke cigarette than female respondents (11%). The chi result indicated that gender is statistically significant association with smoking cigarette. (X2 = 4.598, P < 0.05). Two FGDs with six members each were also conducted. The finding of this study shows that single mothers especially those who are visually impaired have so many challenges in their life like separation ji-om their family, economic hardship, ignorance by the society, communication problems with their child!children due to lack of sight, challenges related rent house, lack of practical allention by government, low awareness by community members, betrayal by their husbands, and many other psychological problems. The stud y reveale d that whil e 6 o ut of 12 respo nd e nts we re s ufferin g fi·om considerabl y low 'Psyc hosocia l and econo mi c li fe, 5 of them manifested serious psychosocia l and econo mi c cri ses . However, o n e of th em was stabl e in that respect. In thi s in stance, almost a ll of th em n eed professiona l intervention to improve th eir well-being. It focuses on how women expenence changes to achieve their empowerment through bringing (1) economic/material change (2) cognitive change (3) perceptional change and (4) relational change. The research is a multiple case study using standard techniques for exploring the impacts of microcredit program on women empowerment. In-depth interviews with five women and direct observations were the major source of data. The research participants were purposefully selected fi'om other member based on their success stories and relative changes they achieved in the program. The research indicates that ADCSI's microcredit program creates empowerment promoting condition for women. It has significant contribution to the empowerment of poor women. Program participant women have improved their income because they launched new ventures and also expanded their economic activities. They also created assets which are controlled by them. The participant level of knowledge, skill, and awareness about their business and the wider environment has increased. Women dependence on their husband has been reduced and their increased income enabled women to be self-reliant. The program also contributed to women sel [-esteem and confidence due to the increased level of acceptance and appreciation both at household and community level. The study indicates that the significant contributions of the program to women empowerment are not without challenges. The main challenges include limited financial product, engaging in less profitable and risky activities, low return and inadequate market outlet and weak networking. Revisit the mission, vision, objectives and the strategic and business plans of ADCSI is important in order to mainstream their activities and address the financial needs of women. In order to assess the holistic life of participant the researcher used qualitative research under this research type explanatory method has been utilized and the researcher interviewed 19 informant specifically 9 delinquent and 10 police officers. The result has shown that a number of driving factors leads youths to becoming a victim of crime. Based on the finding of this study the major driving force of delinquency explained by delinquents are substance abuse, peer pressure, economic problem and separation of family (divorce). The above dynamics trigger the problem. To combat the problem societal altitudinal change, community based program, focusing crime than criminals are alternative and possible coping mechanism. Finally, the researcher focuses on research implication, policy implication and social work implication respectively. Qualitative study design is used to explore the problems of inclusive education on the psychosocial development and academic achievements of deaf students. The empirical data is collected based on interviews. Using purposive sampling technique ten respondents had been selected as study participants. Out of which four deaf students from grades 7 and 8 of the selected school and three parents and three teachers for the interview were selected. The study was conducted at Mekanisa School for the deaf who is found in Addis Ababa. The findings of the study show that deaf students have encountered some social problems at the inclusive school settings. The social problems deaf students in this study faced are related to the friendship formation with hearing peers, communication barriers with parents and to some extent with teachers and hearing peers this was mainly attributed with lack of sign language on the part of parents, teachers and hearing peers. . Deaf students of this study haven't faced serious psychological problems. However, it was revealed in the study that deaf students sometimes show aggressiveness with their social interaction and being easily disappointed if their needs are not meet as they demand .Moreover, they sometimes show feeling of unloved and un wanted in some cases. On the other hand, the finding of the study also revealed that deaf students were not able to achieve better result as their hearing peers though they were integrated. The objective of this study was to explore the prevalence of substance abuse, identify the reasons why students abuse drugs, to see the highly abused drugs and the perceived effect of drug abuse among the students. Respondents were randomly selected for the study. A total of 118 respondents (74 male and 44 female) were selected to fill in a close ended questionnaire. From the total respondents, only 114 (96.6%) completed the questionnaire properly and the non response rate was 4 (3.4%). The analysis of results were based on the 114 respondents. The results were analyzed by using descriptive statistics and inferenial statistics.Pilot study and Pretesting of the questionnaire was conducted among 30 students that were not included in the actual study. Anonymous selfadministered structured questionnaire initially prepared in English version and later translated to Amharic version was conducted in order to obtain the required information from the respondents. The finding in this study indicated the overall prevalence of substance abuse among Ayer Tena secondary school students was 24.6%. The most commonly abused substances as the finding shows, 5.90% smoke cannabis, 4.20% chew khat, and 0.80% drinks Alcohol, and 0.80% smoke cigarettes. Alongside, the study indicated, most of the students abuse more than one substance at the same time and Khat and Cannabis were the highly abused substance by the students. There was no statistically significant association between gender and substance use. The finding shows male students exposed to the problem than that of the female students.A statistically significant association was found in socio demographic variables such as family drug use and age. The minimum age range of the students resides between 15 - 16 yrs of age which constitutes 86.18% of the participants. The result discloses family drug use have an effect on drug use of the students. Beside family influence, peer pressure has been found playing a profound influence for drug using behavior. Drug use behavior is more common with age mates than with family members. As the result demonstrates, the student’s major source of money to purchase substances was their parents. The main consequence of drug use reported by the students was encountering physical and emotional problems. This implies that drug use has negatively contributed to student’s education and relationships. Based on the findings of the study, suggestions were made and social work implications and interventions wereforwarded
