Abstract

The study aims to explore barrier to education for students with disabilities at Addis Ababa university main campus. A quantitative research employing a census or complete enumeration method was used to explore the major barrier students with disabilities face during their education at AAU. To this effect, a quantitative data was collected using structured questionnaires from 289 students with disabilities studying at the main campus of AAU. The finding of the study found a number of major barriers to education for students with disabilities. It was found that, SwD face barrier to education because of; negative attitude 78.9%, lack of educational material 66.1%, physical inaccessibility 46.4%, financial limitation 69.9%, uncooperative faculty member’s 49.1% inaccessible library and classroom building 81.8%. Student also experienced disability-related barriers in teaching and learning process these includes examination 64%, getting information 53.3% assignment 77.9%. Accordingly, policy responses, advocacy and awareness raising, financial support, course and lecture modification, provision of adequate assistive technology and educational material, mainstreaming disability issues in all departments and faculties, equipping disability center with adequate material are recommended
