NGOs are project-driven organizations which need stakeholder management for their success. Despite the importance of stakeholder management only few researches on NGOs in Ethiopia regarding their stakeholder management practice. This study therefore intends to access the practice and challenge of one of Ethiopian NGOs, Three Root International. The study employed qualitative case study approach. Stakeholder identification, plan stakeholder engagement, managing stakeholder engagement and monitor stakeholder engagement are the four components evaluated in order to access the practice of stakeholder management in Three Roots International. The study was conducted on 3 employees, 2 volunteers, and 5 beneficiaries of the NGO. The study on the employees is conducted based on the four components and the study on volunteers and beneficiaries is conducted in order to investigate the NGO’s practice in engaging these particular stakeholders in its project’s life cycle. The finding indicates that stakeholders are identified based on their impact on the project and by creating a communication for stakeholder and creating meaningful project vision, project design and make the stakeholders engage in training, participating in each cycle of the project is their planning mechanism. Stakeholders’ engagement is managed by working closely, make stakeholders participate in the project directly, training stakeholders and the communication strategies it uses. Stakeholders’ engagement method that is used by the NGO is positive response of contribution and opening up for stakeholders to participate based on their skill and knowledge, discussion in meeting. The challenge the NGO faces in stakeholder management is previous concept of development anticipated by the stakeholders which is assuming development incurred only by receiving money and resisting change for the new development concept. Based on the findings of this study, it is recommended that the NGO should extend its partnership with other stakeholders to address other community’s issues and should extend its communication strategies for volunteers in order to address beneficiaries demand according to their cultural contextItem Adaptation of Results Based Monitoring and Evaluation of Local NGOs in Ethiopia Case of YeAmlak Lijoch Foundation(Addis Ababa University, 2021-09) Ayalneh, Tewfit; Bekalu, Wubshet (PhD)The purpose of this study is to identify the challenge factors and the success criterion of RBME implementation in Ethiopia. Its main focus of study is the identification of challenges that arise in agile project management approach. In parallel, the study assesses the agile practice at Starcom. A brief literature review is presented to define the context of agile. It contains agile definition, its concepts, values and known problems. On top of that, an empirical review was conducted to review what research has been done on the subject. Since the study is a descriptive research, it follows a descriptive approach in its questionnaire design and data analysis tools. Data gathering methodology was a classical one: primary data from the project team and secondary data from the developed software and the product log were gathered. A questionnaire consisting of Likert scale was distributed to the project team members (48 out of 53 responded). 34 questions divided in three categories were presented in a 7 option Likert scale. Gathered data was later analyzed using descriptive statistics measurements like data frequency, central tendency, and dispersion. Data analysis suggests there is good agile practice at Starcom, but challenges lie in CoreIT software development, and they have affected the outcome of the project, time wise, cost wise, and scope wise. The recommendations are directed toward a hybrid system of waterfall and agile methodology, as it brings together the strength of each methodology: control and flexibility. Keywords: agile practice, challenges, hybrid, project managementItem Agile Software Project Management Practices and Success Rates of Monitoring and Evaluation Software Projects in the NGO Sector – the case of PRIME: a scrum software project(Addis Ababa University, 2018-06-04) Bizuayehu, Girum; Mammo, Seifu (Ato)Motivation towards the use of agile project management approach is an important step for adopting agile project management, however a spectrum of agile facades from the team’s agile mindset to the business stakeholder’s readiness are all relevant parameters that are needed to be measured for validating the implementation of a successful agile project management. This study selected PRIME project’s Monitoring and Evaluation assisting software project that adopted Scrum – an agile software project management method, as its project management approach. With primary objective of identifying the effectiveness of the adopted management approach, the research analyzed the level of the agile use and the success of the project that can be attributed to the stated method. The study used a primary data source using a structured questionnaire that are adopted from a standard Scrum metrics to measure the level and maturity of scrum implementation in the project. In addition, the success of the project has been analyzed to identify the relevance of the adopted method to the success of the project. Using a purposive sampling technique, the researcher selected respondents who assumed various roles in the software project. The findings indicated a moderate or medium maturity level in the process adoption and there is also an observed link between the level and maturity of the Scrum method used and the project’s success. Being a case study and constrained by the time resource, the research has limitation in strengthening the analysis by using qualitative methods as additional research approach. Thus, there should be a risk management system to manage risks and ensure project objectives and thereby maintain success. In the process of running construction projects, often times, and contractors are challenged by .various risks that need to be addressed. This study was conducted with the aim to assess the risk management practices of contractors who are currently operating in Addis Ababa, and they are all engaged in Building Construction projects. It tried to identify the major construction risk factors and examine their level of severity on project objectives. The study also explored the different preventive and remedial methods used as well as the relative use of different risk management practices and the common risk analysis techniques employed by contractors. Two tools, questionnaire and interview, were employed to collect relevant data. The questionnaire was distributed to 39Level one contractors who were legally registered by Addis Ababa City Administration Building construction Permit Authority. For the data collected through questionnaire survey, the SPSS and relative importance Index were used for analysis. The results of the survey showed that the risk that belong to the major risk categories such as Physical, Design, Financial, construction and political were identified as high risk factors, and they affect construction projects significantly. Some of the risks identified from each category were: Poor safety procedures resulting into Accident Occurrence, Awarding the design to unqualified designers, Exchange rate fluctuation, Unrealistic Project Schedule, Lack of qualified & competent professionals and Changes in design. The finding showed that that contractors tend to use Avoiding risks as a method of risk prevention. Increasing the working hours was used as remedial method used by contractors. Also, the study identified that comparing Analysis which is comparing similar projects through similar conditions was the most used technique by contractors to analyze risks. However, the results from the interview discussion revealed that it is uncommon to analyze risks systematically. Risks are usually addressed after they happen, and contractors are often busy with fighting the fire instead of having advance precautions about the potential risk or threats. Based on the findings, the study recommended that risks that were identified as high in terms of their level of severity (such as the ones mentioned above) should be given attention in order to minimize the challenges building construction projects encounter and realize project objectives. For this to happen, there should be a well-established risk management system which considers risk as one of the major crucial components of construction projects. Besides, contractors should undergo proper professional training that targets risk preventative, Remedial and analysis techniques.Item An Assessment of Monitoring and Evaluation Practices of Digital Banking Project of Awash Bank Sc.(Addis Ababa University, 2023-07) Tsion Amenu; Berhanu Denu(PhD)The purpose of this study is to assess the Monitoring and Evaluation Practices of Digital-Banking projects in the Case of Awash International Bank. The escalating resource constraints faced by organizations require the implementation of project management methods that will maximize the proportion of successful projects. Therefore this study is aimed to assess the project management practice and performance in the case of construction projects in Sebeta town from the perspectives of four project life cycles. To achieve its objectives, the study uses a descriptive and explanatory research design and primary data were used. A questionnaire was a mechanism used to collect data from 31 project staffs. The data was analyzed by obtaining the means and standard deviations. As a result, the findings revealed a moderate level of project planning, execution, and closing practice. The correlation analysis was employed mainly to assess if there is significant degree of association between the project management practices and project performance. The result indicates that all project management practices have positive relationship with project performance. Using multiple linear regressions, the explanatory variables were checked whether they are significantly explaining the dependent variable (performance) or not and also to check whether independent variables have positive or negative relationship with the dependent variable(project performance). The result indicates that project closure and initiation have positive and significant relationship with project performance while project planning has significant negative relationship. Project execution has insignificant negative relationship with project performance. From the findings, the study concludes that there is an inefficiency of project management practices followed within construction projects, and these practices could be graded as moderate with respect to best practices. Finally though the project was not completed with the planned budget and schedule, it was good in achieving the expected quality, objective and goal. Based on this the study proposes: Sebeta project office should develop a culture of developing appropriate risk plans and risk response controls, to prevent unexpected risks and failures, it should also develop a strong culture of lessons learned documentation at every project performed by the organization, Short term project management methodologies should be given to project office staffs.
