Item A Critical Analysis of the Revised Ethiopian Commercial Code in Light of OECD’s Principles of Corporate Governance with Emphasis on Roles and Responsibilities of the Board of Directors of Share Companies(Addis Ababa University, 2022-06) Million Alemu; Mengistu Bogale (PhD)The aim of this study is to critically analyze the roles and responsibilities of BoDs of SCs as contained in RCC and Banks’ Corporate Governance vis-à-vis the Principles that are included as in OECD’s Principles, which are accepted as the international best practice to be emulated. The study has utilized a qualitative research approach and exploratory research design. The theoretical and empirical reviews of the pertinent literature, as well as the interview conducted, have revealed that RCC has gone leaps and bounds in embodying what is expected by the sixth principle of OECD. Yet, there are still observable lacunae like failing to require ethical standards from BoDs, failing to mandate BoDs to decide on remuneration issues, and failing to put a requirement in place that ensures disclosure and communication mechanism. All of these and other deficiencies of RCC relating to corporate governance call for promulgation of a Code of Corporate Governance by the Ethiopian Council of Ministers that obliges all financial and non-financial SCs and a Directive by MoTRI the ensures the effective implementation of the Regulation to be passed by the Council of Ministers. An autonomous government organ that oversees the effective implementation of the Code of Corporate Governance should also be establishedItem A Project Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of The Requirements for The Degree of Master of Business Leadership(Addis Ababa University, 2023-06) Alazar Adula; Seifu Mamo (Associate Professor)In the present business environment of accelerated volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity (VUCA), as experienced in Ethiopian Banking industry, the researcher found the area of organizational agility (proactive, flexible, responsive and speedy systems), as the one less researched. NGOs are project-driven organizations which need stakeholder management for their success. Despite the importance of stakeholder management only few researches on NGOs in Ethiopia regarding their stakeholder management practice. This study therefore intends to access the practice and challenge of one of Ethiopian NGOs, Three Root International. The study employed qualitative case study approach. Stakeholder identification, plan stakeholder engagement, managing stakeholder engagement and monitor stakeholder engagement are the four components evaluated in order to access the practice of stakeholder management in Three Roots International. The study was conducted on 3 employees, 2 volunteers, and 5 beneficiaries of the NGO. The study on the employees is conducted based on the four components and the study on volunteers and beneficiaries is conducted in order to investigate the NGO’s practice in engaging these particular stakeholders in its project’s life cycle. The finding indicates that stakeholders are identified based on their impact on the project and by creating a communication for stakeholder and creating meaningful project vision, project design and make the stakeholders engage in training, participating in each cycle of the project is their planning mechanism. Stakeholders’ engagement is managed by working closely, make stakeholders participate in the project directly, training stakeholders and the communication strategies it uses. Stakeholders’ engagement method that is used by the NGO is positive response of contribution and opening up for stakeholders to participate based on their skill and knowledge, discussion in meeting. The challenge the NGO faces in stakeholder management is previous concept of development anticipated by the stakeholders which is assuming development incurred only by receiving money and resisting change for the new development concept. Based on the findings of this study, it is recommended that the NGO should extend its partnership with other stakeholders to address other community’s issues and should extend its communication strategies for volunteers in order to address beneficiaries demand according to their cultural contextItem Adaptation of Results Based Monitoring and Evaluation of Local NGOs in Ethiopia Case of YeAmlak Lijoch Foundation(Addis Ababa University, 2021-09) Ayalneh, Tewfit; Bekalu, Wubshet (PhD)The purpose of this study is to identify the challenge factors and the success criterion of RBME implementation in Ethiopia. To this end, this study aimed at identifying determinants of adoption of agricultural technologies in the barley-based farming system of Ethiopia, with the specific objectives of identifying factors affecting Agricultural technology package choice and to assess the interdependency between the technologies. The study used data from the Ethiopian socioeconomic survey. The descriptive and econometric analytical tools were applied. The descriptive result of the study identified that variables like education, family size, credit access, farm size, farm income, and age of the farmer play significant roles, across barley technologies. The results show that about 66.96%, 58.59%, 75.18%, 65.17%, and 75.99% of sample households were adopted an improved variety of barley, urea, dap, chemicals, manure, and crop rotation respectively. All the barley production technologies were complementary (i.e. urea, improved variety, dap, chemicals, manure, and crop rotation). Multivariate probit model results showed that Age of household head, Soil fertility, farm size, Training, and transportation cost affect the adoption of barley technologies negatively and significantly. Sex of household head, education level of household head, Farm income, tropical livestock unit, and access to credit affects adoption of barley technologies positively and significantly. Smallholder farmers were more likely to succeed than fail in jointly adopting barley technologies. Consequently, government policy and other concerned parties should emphasize the improvement of the institutional support system and decrease gender disparities in access to such institutions.Item Adoption of Coffee Technologies and Their Impact on Annual Yield in Jimma Zone South Western Ethiopia(Addis Ababa University, 2022-01) Megdelawit Temesgen; Sisay Debebe(PhD)Sector of agriculture plays a significant role in Ethiopian economy. Ethiopia has huge potential to increase coffee production as it endowed with suitable elevation, temperature, and soil fertility, indigenous quality plantation materials, and sufficient rainfall in coffee growing belts of the country. Adoption of improved coffee varieties and slashing with a recommended period of time together have a significant effect on coffee production. The study was aimed to see the determinant of adoption of coffee technologies and their impact on annual yield of coffee in Jima zone south western Ethiopia. 196 sampled households from three woreda in the zone and 430 plots of 196 farmers household is considered in the survey. This study develops a multinomial logit and a multinomial endogenous switching regression model to see determinant of adoption and impact respectively. The study revealed four major results. First adoption rate and intensity of coffee variety is greater than the management practice. Second, adoption of coffee technologies constrained by different factor like land shortage, inaccessibility in technologies, lack of information and high cost of labor constraint farmers in adoption coffee technologies in addition to these constraints the disease and weeds which faces in farmers land leads them to replace coffee by chat. Third, from the multinomial logit model farmers adoption of coffee technologies determined by three major category these are farmers resource factor, the second determining factor is the institutional factor, the third factor farmers specific characteristics. Fourth, greater annual coffee yield obtained from simultaneous adoption of both improved coffee variety and management practice. This implies that policy makers, coffee breeders, extension service provider and other stakeholders promoting a combination of technologies can enhance annual coffee production. Its main focus of study is the identification of challenges that arise in agile project management approach. In parallel, the study assesses the agile practice at Starcom. A brief literature review is presented to define the context of agile. It contains agile definition, its concepts, values and known problems. On top of that, an empirical review was conducted to review what research has been done on the subject. Since the study is a descriptive research, it follows a descriptive approach in its questionnaire design and data analysis tools. Data gathering methodology was a classical one: primary data from the project team and secondary data from the developed software and the product log were gathered. A questionnaire consisting of Likert scale was distributed to the project team members (48 out of 53 responded). 34 questions divided in three categories were presented in a 7 option Likert scale. Gathered data was later analyzed using descriptive statistics measurements like data frequency, central tendency, and dispersion. Data analysis suggests there is good agile practice at Starcom, but challenges lie in CoreIT software development, and they have affected the outcome of the project, time wise, cost wise, and scope wise. The recommendations are directed toward a hybrid system of waterfall and agile methodology, as it brings together the strength of each methodology: control and flexibility. Keywords: agile practice, challenges, hybrid, project managementItem Agile Software Project Management Practices and Success Rates of Monitoring and Evaluation Software Projects in the NGO Sector – the case of PRIME: a scrum software project(Addis Ababa University, 2018-06-04) Bizuayehu, Girum; Mammo, Seifu (Ato)Motivation towards the use of agile project management approach is an important step for adopting agile project management, however a spectrum of agile facades from the team’s agile mindset to the business stakeholder’s readiness are all relevant parameters that are needed to be measured for validating the implementation of a successful agile project management. There is still a research void in this sector, despite that several studies are being undertaken in the field of supply chain agility. A supply chain's operational capability to quickly identify and respond to changes within and outside the organization, either beforehand or subsequently, using intra- and inter-organizational talents in an approach that guarantees profitability is known as supply chain agility. In order to explore and provide answers to the subject matter and goals, the study used the commonly utilized facets of supply chain agility: Alertness, Accessibility, Decisiveness, Swiftness, and Flexibility as a dependent variable and Technology Utilization, Resource Management, Supplier Relationship, Environmental Pressure, and Delivery Speed as an independent variable. The research also explored the Logistics performance of the organization. The research was based on 125 questionnaires distributed to BGI Ethiopia in which 119 responses were collected which resulted in 92.5% response rate. The research shows that BGI has a high overall adoption of the agile supply chain dimensions i.e., Flexibility, Alertness, and Accessibility had high ranking means and the rest with moderate ranking means. The organization also has a high overall logistics performance. Efficiency and Differentiation had high ranking means while Effectiveness gained a moderate ranking mean. Regression analysis indicated that Technology Utilization, Resource management and Delivery speed are significant determinants or enablers that affect Supply Chain Management and, Alertness, Decisiveness, and Flexibility significantly and favorably affect Logistics performance. It was suggested to strengthen its overall agility, emphasizing decisiveness and swiftness improvement is crucial; also, remaining under budget to boost efficiency will favorably affect logistics performance. Mainly focusing on Technology Utilization, Resource management and Delivery speed and bettering this enablers will positively affect the agile supply chain management and finally, giving a greater emphasis on Alertness, Decisiveness and Flexibility will positively affect the Logistics Performance. Key words: Supply chain agility, Determinants of Agile supply chain, Logistics PerformanceItem Agricultural Technology Adoption and its Impact on Households’ Welfare in Rural Ethiopia: A Panel Data Analysis(Addis Ababa University, 2021-08) Demeke, Anteneh; Gutu, Zelalem (PhD)This study examined factors affecting agricultural technology adoption and its impact on farming households’ welfare in rural Ethiopia. Agricultural technology adoption can positively contributes to the welfare of smallholder farming households via improving crop yield and productivity. However, in most of the rural areas of Ethiopia the adoption rate is very low. Therefore, this study examines the determining factors in adopting agricultural technologies and its implied impact on welfare status of farming households. The study utilizes balanced panel data of Ethiopian Socio-economic Survey (ESS); which was collected by CSA of Ethiopia in collaboration with the World Bank in three rounds of wave during 2011/12, 2013/14 and 2015/16 in all regions of the country. The study employed logistic regression model as estimation criteria and the casual impact of technology adoption estimated by Difference-in-Differences combined with Propensity Score Matching (DID-PSM) techniques so as to assess the results robustness and their implied impact on households’ welfare. This helps to estimate the true welfare effect by cοntrοling unobserved heterogeneity and handle the problem of selection bias in treatment effects. The results show that adopters of agricultural technology had higher nominal total consumption expenditure per adult equivalent, per capita food consumption expenditure and per capita non-food consumption expenditure than non-adopter but the change was insignificant on per capita education expenditure; and this confirms that adoption of agricultural technologies has a positive and significant impact on household's consumption apart from per capita education expenditure. The study concluded that the need of a wide-ranging policy framework to confront constraints that promote the adoption of agricultural technologies so as to improve welfare of farming households in rural Ethiopia.Item Alignment of the Success Factors of Mass Customization with the Marketing Environment of the Ethiopian Leather Garment Industry(Addis Ababa University, 2014-05) Siraj, Muzeyen; Takele, Yitbarek (PhD)This research was conducted to look in to the concept of mass customization and the alignment of the success factors of mass customization in the context of Ethiopian leather garment marketing environment.
