Item The Role of Schools for the Development of Trackand Field Athletics in Some Selected High Schools in Addis Ababa City Administration(Addis Abeba university, 2004-08) Sitote, Wondale; Asgedom, Tesfaye(PhD)Athletics is a medium through which an all rounded development of personality can be promoted. Running, jumping and throwing are the most elements and natural physical activity of all the people of the world and of all society since the beginning of time. Track and field has become an independent sport with its own events, special techniques and tactics of movement, coaching methods and low of competitions. The study is about the role schools for development of track and field athletics in some selected Addis Ababa city administration high schools. This research will explore the role of schools for the development of athletics events in order to offer athletes from track and field and the method employed students, physical education teachers and Addis Ababa athletics federation experts which works with school track and field athletes those were selected by using random selected sampling. The research involves three sub-cities within ten sub-cities in Addis Ababa city administration. From each sub-city three high schools were selected and totally168 students were selected randomly from nine high schools, teacher’s federation experts were selected. This research used both qualitative and quantitative research approach. Therefore, the data obtained through questionnaire was analyzed quantitatively. For quantitative analysis percentage and number were employed. The data was collected through interview and observations were analyzed qualitatively to substantiate the quantitative analysis. Hence, Young athlete preparation is one of the teacher's main objectives. The physical education teacher can accomplish this by establishing harmony in the youngster's physical, technical, and strategic preparation. The teacher must establish such a concord for psychological preparation, meaning sound relationships, friendships, and common goals among school teammatesItem Attitudes on the Correlation of the Academic Achievement and Physical Proficiency: the Case of Top Ten Natural Science Preparatory Students in Each Section, at Lideta Sub-City In Addis Ababa(Addis Abeba university, 2005-06) Berihun, Kibruyisfa; Teka, Solomon(PhD)This study is rendered to examine the pseudo perception of top ten, grade twelve preparatory students in each class, in Lideta sub-city, on the correlation of academic and physical proficiencies, the motive of the researcher to undertake the study is on one hand to see the association of the physical development with that of intellectual and determine their correlation on the other hand to assess the perception of those ranked students towards the school physical education engagement and physical activities at large in any case to do so (to make the study practical and viable) the researcher customized descriptive co relational method and the sampling procedure is deliberative(convenient) sampling and the sample size was 100 participants that were engaged by the study, in connection with this the data sources were both the primary and secondary, as the primary data gathering procedure questionnaires , focus group discussion and interviews were prepared and questionnaires were constructed and distributed for both those top ten students and for those PE teachers of those ranked students at the study areas whereas the interview were semi structured type and the items constructed and presented(interviewed) for those aforesaid PE teachers (interviewees) and while the focus group discussion where carried on for those four selected PE teachers, all the activates have been recorded with tape recorder and what have you as the secondary data sources the researcher has been operationalised the literature review which clearly showed the association of academic performance with that of physical efficacy in a positive comportment and as the secondary data sources the researcher has been organized a check list in order to observe the physical features and related phenomena within the study areas ,having said all these things about the nature of the study and data sources the data that was obtained by questionnaires were analyzed and interpreted quantitatively with tabulation in percentage whereas the rest aforesaid data sources have been analyzed and interpreted qualitatively at the end findings, conclusions and recommendations have taken their own places and they approved a positive direction. Accordingly, attempts have been made to assess the role of physical education, factors contributing the spread of HIV/AIDS, benefits of regular exercise and also the role of sport to reduce HIV/AIDS in Addis Ababa Nifas Silk Lafto Sub-City Administration in case of some selected high schools. 65 teachers 150 students and 3 principals, 3 sport club leaders, 3 HIV/AIDS club leaders were the respondents of the study. These samples were selected from Lafto secondary school, Ginbot 20 secondary school and Lake Hadge secondary school. Available purposeful and stratified random samplings were used in selecting the respondents. The instruments used for collecting the data were questionnaires, interviews and observation. Analysis of the data was made using quantitative or percentage method. Result of the study showed that physical education and sport plays great role in the schools to improve and develop health, To develop mental ability, To achieve academic performance, To develop social relationship, To develop emotional, feeling attitude and spiritual, To help appropriate using of leisure time, To help behavioral change, To save from bad habits( chewing khat, alcohol, smoking and unsafe sex that contribute the spread of HIV/AIDS, To live quality life style, Helps to educate about transmission and prevention of HIV/AIDS and develop economy. Finally, regular physical activity helps to ;- Maintains or builds muscle mass and decreases fat, helping to maintain a healthy body weight, Reduces cholesterol and triglyceride levels (less risk of heart disease), Increases energy, Regulates bowel function, Strengthens bones (less risk of osteoporosis), Improves blood circulation, Increases lung capacity, Helps with sound, restful sleep, Lowers stress and can improve depression, Improves appetite, Reduces the risk of high blood pressure, diabetes, and some kinds of cancer In accordance with the findings recommendations are forwardedItem The Impact of Physical Fitness Training on Health Related Fitness Trainees: The Case of Assosa Town Fitness Centers(Addis Abeba university, 2006-08) Ayalew, Alemayehu; Teka, SolomonThis study was aimed at investigating the impact of physical fitness training on health related fitness trainees: The case of Assosa town fitness centers. In order to achieve this purpose, some basic questions were raised regarding the general conditions of the fitness centers, instructors’ qualification, gym facility and the fitness program as a whole, as well as fitness tests for the trainees and interview for gym instructors and experts. The study would be used quantitative, qualitative and experimental research methods, and simple random and purposive sampling techniques for selecting those who took part in the study. In this study there were eighty five total populations of gym trainees from the four known fitness centers in Assosa town and the subjects of the study were totally sixty in number: fifty trainees, eight trainers, and two experts of the region sport commission were participated. Questionnaires, fitness tests, interviews, and observations were used as tools of data gathering instruments. Accordingly, the overall study revealed that there were significant changes on the health related fitness exercise results of the trainees. The study concluded that when regular physical activity is combined with proper nutrition and following correct principles of physical training it can help to reduce body fat by building muscle mass and control body weight by preventing obesity, a major risk factor for many diseases (Head Quarters Department of the US Army, 1998). Thus the recommendations for addressing the issue includes higher institutes should produce qualified professionals for the area; gyms should consider some important materials and facilities like changing rooms, fully stocked first aid kit, fire extinguisher, forms which trainees fill in, medical cheek up of trainees and gyms should also follow a correct principles of physical fitness training, and finally mass media fitness programs should be a coordinated and cooperative work with governmental and non-governmental organizations to achieve the desired objectivesItem Challenges of Development of Youth Handball Clubs the case of Boditti Town In Wolaiyta Zone-South Nation Nationalities and People Region(Addis Abeba university, 2006-08) Ferenj, Endrias; Bizuneh, Shalemikaeh(PhD)The purpose of this study was to assess the challenges of the development of youth handball club: focusing on some selected weredas handball club in wolaytta zone S.N.N P.R.To realize this purposes,five basic questions regarding the assistance given to coaches,coaches attitudestowards the program,why and how coaches practice the program,the effects of the program on the daily activities of trainee and challenges affecting the effective implementation of the program were asked.To address these questions, the descriptive survey methods was employed.The subject in this study were 45(18.66%) trainee 2(40%) coaches of the respective field 4(100%) of sport office leaders and 2(100%) school directors selected from the total population of 249(100%). .As a method of data gathering tools questionnaire, interview, observational checklist analysis were employed. To analysis the collected data both quantitative and qualitative methods such as descriptive statement and frequency counts, and percentage were on use respectively.The quantitative data were first edited,organized and tabulated and then analyzed by using frequency and percentage.The qualitative data were analyzed as they were understood by the researcher.The result of data analysis and interpretation indicated that the support given to coaches and trainee of handball clubs of twoweredas was low.The major constraints associated with lack of coaches qualification, lack of adequate facilities, lack of knowledge of handball game and trainees problem were found through the clubs. To overcome this problems, the following recommendations have been forwarded .This are working with all stakeholders as to solve the problems of facilities,working with sport offices leaders, find fund and communicate with trainees family, on require bases on job training should be offered for coach, once equipment as well as qualified man power and the clubs should open its door for individuals and clubs with responsible cost to develop the club. To desire objective team of the study a descriptive survey based on structured questionnaires was conducted with randomly sampled female athletics (n = 50) & coaches and managers (n = 6) in the two clusters. During December 2008 to February 2008 E.C. the sampling technique was purposive sampling techniques. In addition different participatory tools (questionnaire and interviewer) used to collect primary information. Official statics and published literature were intensively reviewed. Secondly some used data were analyzed with tools using absolute number. Frequently and percentage of the respondents and qualitative and quantitative analysis were one. The finding or revealed that the coaches and governing body experience to bring the better performance of an athletics in the cluster team’s policy, resource material, sport mangers behavior, cooperation with others, limited finical sources and no more financial strategy as well as week fans mobilizing trend. Therefore this research study suggest with need of enabling management and leadership strategy related to coaching training for the coach, financial and fans support and training for athletics for competent as well as interaction among the stakeholders for the better athletics performance in the gibe woreda female athletics. Key –word Leadership, management, performance, communication and team approachItem Preparation and Implementation of Annual Training Plan in Football: With Specific Reference to Some Clubs in Amhara Regional State(Addis Abeba university, 2010-05) Kefyalew, Ashenafi; Asnake, Haile(PhD)The purpose of this study was to assess the training plan of those selected club coaches and to identify the major factors influencing the implementation of periodic plan during training and competition. Four Ethiopian national league football competitive clubs were selected as subject of the study. A total of 68 respondents participated as a source of data, 64 players and 4 head coaches of the selected clubs. Observation checklist, document analysis (annual plan evaluation checklist) and questionnaires were used as data gathering tools. The data collected were analyzed using percentage and descriptive phrases. The findings of the study displayed that, the annual training plan prepared by those selected club coaches were missed including some major components of a training plan such as objectives, psychological training indices and considering the fixture list. This study gives attention to Ethiopian higher education institutions in particular of less attention to persons with disabilities in physical education curriculum. Though, the main intent of this study is to identify challenges and the opportunities that hinder to facilitate the need of individuals with special need in physical education program in comparison with other students. Physical education program becomes incomplete on its objectives and benefits to students with disabilities at higher institutions to be advantageous from the physical education curriculum. There are gaps between the need of students with disabilities and the curriculum designed for physical education. The study is employed in qualitative method of research to describe the real situation in three selected higher institutions which are purposively selected in the study and data are collected from 33 physical education teachers in higher institutions, 22 students with disabilities and 5 concerned informants of special needs education students and administrative staff of higher institutions are addressed through formulated questionnaire semi structured interview, and focus group discussions respectively. And also observation check-list is used to observe the institutions’ facilities and features that give attention to students with disabilities in physical education curriculum. The data is analyzed in qualitative method of descriptive way of the situation based on the basic questions of the research come up with findings to the challenges of students with disabilities are not participant in physical education curriculum due to less attitudes, lack of professionals, facilities, and resources in the institutions. The investigated discussions are designing adapted physical education curriculum, drawing models and strategies based on the type and level of impairmentsItem Assessment on the Implementation of Football Injury Prevention Strategies: in the Case of Some Selected Southern Nation Nationalities and People Regional State Primer League Football Clubs, Ethiopia(Addis Ababa University, 2010-06-04) Adefres, Sosina; Tadesse, Wondimu (Professer)The purpose of this study was to assess the implementation of football injury prevention strategies: in the case of some selected clubs in south nation nationalities and people region primer league football clubs. Taking this as a general objective of the study, a comparative study research method is applied to investigate the problem. The target populations in the study were football players and coaching staffs who were participating in Wolaita Dicha football club and Hawassa Kenema football club. A comprehensive sample of 56 players and 12 coaching staffs were taken in the study. The data collection instruments designed for the studies were questionnaires, interview, and observation. The questionnaires were prepared for the players. The interview was conducted for the coaching staffs. The data collected from 40 players (16 questionnaires were discarded due to response errors) and 6 coaches through the interview were organized and analyzed using SPSS version 25. To attain the objectives of the study both descriptive and inferential statistic was applied. To test the significance between the two groups of club p. value is adjusted to 0.05 and then tabulated in tables. The data obtained from the interview were qualitatively analyzed in words. Based on the findings of the study it was found that there is Shortage of materials and equipment and also they don’t use equipment designed to reduce injury risk, lack of availability of suitable playing surface, there is appropriate and fit sportswear, there is warm –up period during training and match session, and also they have a cool-down period during training session but they don’t have cooling down period during match, not strength and flexibility training as a team or individually, not take appropriate carbohydrate intake, and here is lake of knowledge regarding to injury prevention. Based on the findings the following recommendations were drown. Coaches and players must know those injury prevention strategies and Implement them in their training and match session. Clubs should fulfill materials and equipment to reduce the risk of injury, employ qualified medical persons, and fulfill medical equipment’s. Coaches Should prepare their training plan by including injury prevention strategies, they must follow the principle of training to eradicate the occurrence of injury in their clubs, Must encourage players to wear appropriate and fit sportswear, to take rest and to consume carbohydrates and fluid before, during, and after training and match. Players must do appropriate warming ups and cooling downs activities, Participate in flexibility and strength training to develop strength for their body parts. The concerned body should provide good facilities and equipment, Suitable playing field, Formulate a proposal to the concerned donor to get funds.Item Challenges and Opportunities of Physical Education in Five Selected Evangelical Theological Colleges of Addis Ababa(2011-05) Seyfachew, Ketsela; Wolde, Bezabeh(PhDThis study attempts to find out the opportunities and challenges of physical education in five Evangelical theological college found in Addis Ababa. Physical education, physical exercise, sport and play are the most similar words for many people around the world that put them in to dilemma. It is easy to see and hear they say one word saying the other one, even though Christianity and physical activity and education has positive relationship from Bible, it seemed two of them are like enemy. For many centuries celebrations and festivals had traditionally revolved around the church and its fasting days due to creating positive relationship among members, families and communities. After a while due to many reasons celebrations and festivals forced to be stopped. In our days living becomes very fast and short. This makes man to become machine (car, train, air plane, washing machine, electronics, etc) dependent or oriented, which forces man to become idle, this pushes man become sick due to having less activity. The best solution to minimize or avoid the problem at certain level is using Evangelical theological colleges, hoping this will change their way of behavior towards physical activity. Being a believer of the word of Holy Bible does not mean being inactive. We can have many individuals from the Bible who were very accurate, sharp, fit, fast, strong etc. it known that the Bible is written for our knowledge and learning ,which means we must learn only spiritual and but not physicalItem Factors that Affect Women Coaches Towards Elite Sport Coaching Position in Addis Ababa City Administration2(Addis Abeba university, 2011-05) Haile, Temesgen; Belay, Mebratu(Assistant Professor)This thesis examines the problem of the lack of women sport coaches towards elite sport coaches in Addis Ababa City Administration. Moreover, it offers a research agenda that discusses and analyses this issue in relation to the Addis Ababa’s experience. This study, using a qualitative research method included semi-structured interviews, Document analysis, and focus group discussion, and by using convenience sampling method 10(ten) female coaches from five sports (Athletics, Handball, Basketball, Volleyball and Football) invited to participate in a personal interview. The informants were asked questions about the perceived factors/problems that exist for them in the coaching context. And also they discuss their problems what they faced. The major Findings were presented under four main domains: Social and Cultural barriers; Economic barriers; Institutional barriers, and Organizational barriers. The most important barrier perceived to exist for the informants was social and cultural, and centered on family commitments and priorities. Lack of time, which had a strong social dimension and organizational barriers such as the 'old boys club’, was also common barriers for the informants. A number of factors were identified which removed some of the barriers women coaches face; these included supportive spouses, education and training, and mentoring by other coaches.Item The Contribution of Governmet Secondery Schools for the Development of Handball Sport in Addis Ababa Bole Sub City(Addis Abeba university, 2011-06) Negash, Tewodros; Belay, Mebratu(Assistant Professor)The major purpose of this paper was to investigate a study on the contribution of same selected secondary schools found in bole sub city Addis Ababa for development of handball sport and make recommendation for their contribution for handball sport development. The main issues considered are schools contribution for handball sport development. To this end descriptive survey method was employed. Data were gathered from three general secondary schools, six teachers and three hundred students. Accordingly, the respondents sampling was carried out through simple random selecting techniques. The data for the study was obtained through questioner, interview, observation various statistically techniques both qualitative and quantitative. Percentages were used to analyses the data. The result indicates that: - inadequacy of school materials, facilities and teaching materials, family and teachers and other concerned bodies to encourage involving the Children to participate in handball activities, the students are not interested like the other ball games. There for it is recommended that depending on the result , firstly concerned bodies that is teachers, school directors, parents and other concerned bodies have to encourage students to participate in handball activities , schools must fulfill equipments and handball teaching materials that encourage student interest and participation in handball activities , give equal opportunity to handball sport like the other ball games and parents also work together closely with teachers and students, increasing handball specialized teachers to work closely with physical education teachers and handball teachers must directly involve when the curriculum and other competition programs were organized to overcome the problem that affect s students participation in handball activities, to encourage the student participation and interest in handball activity and to give regular counseling for the students on the basis of their performance inside and outside of the school.Item Assessment of Nutritional Status of Athletes and Its Effects on Their Performance The Case of Defense Athletics Club(Addis Abeba university, 2011-06) Maddesa, Dirbeba; Belay, Mebratu(Assistant Professor)The effort of this research is to assess the defense athletics club nutritional status which is one of the crucial factor for once enhancement in performance. Descriptive survey design was used to conduct this research. Endurance athletes were selected and stratified in to sex and their specific events, finally 50% were selected by simple random sampling from each stratum and three coaches were selected purposively. The data has been gathered mainly using questionnaire, observation, interview and direct measurement. The data has been analyzed using both qualitative and quantitative analysis methods. Accordingly, frequency counts with percentage and direct calculation of the energy intake and expenditure has been employed to analyze various information of the subjects of the study. The findings of the study revealed that, there is energy imbalance in defense club. Moreover, almost majority of the athletes have greater intake than expenditure except for only a few athletes. Finally, the recommendations were forwarded based on the major findings. Four sample youth (junior-B) projects were selected, from seven Addis Ababa Administrative city premier league participant clubs, (EEPC, Dedebit, Defense and Commercial Bank of Ethiopia) youth projects using simple random sampling technique. Thus, the subjects in the study were 100 players, 4 coaches, and 4 administrative officials. In this study descriptive survey method was employed. Questionnaire was dominantly used as data collection instrument; unstructured interview and observation were also used in the process. The data gathered through questionnaires were analyzed by using frequency counts and their percentages; where as the data gathered through interview and observation were analyzed through descriptive statements. The major findings include that failure of coaches to manage and follow players throughout the training session, inappropriate or wrong methods of warm-up and cool-down by players, lack of facilities and equipments for training, and nutritional variables affect the training of youth projects and its contribution to the main clubs. Hence, it could be concluded that the training of youth (junior-B) projects which are administered or governed by Premier league participant clubs of Addis Ababa Administrative city highly affected by shortage of facilities and equipments. In addition to these inappropriate or wrong methods of warming-up and cooling-down also some of the constraints of the training session.Item Challenge and Practices Of School on the Contribution for the Development of Basketball in Addis Ababa City Administration(Addis Abeba university, 2011-06) Gizaw, Wondwosen; Asgedome, Tesfaye(PhD)Basketball was first played in Entoto Comprehensive and Kokebe Tsebah Secondary School. Then the Addis Ababa inter-school association included basketball in the inter-school competition which was held every year during that time.The focus of this study was to investigate challenges and practice of school on the contribution for the development of basketball. A concise review of related literature was taken to discuss the different issues which are related with school basketball.To conduct this study, a descriptive survey method was employed to asses’ data from targeted sampled groups. The sampled school includes ten government schools. The subject of the study were 102 students 10 principals, 10 teachers and 5 federation members 2 alumni (former student/coach). The data obtained from respondents through questionnaire, interview, focus group discussion and observation presented as supplements to enrich information that was drawn questionnaires. The result of the study revealed that there is lack of qualified basketball coach, material, interest to coach, personal out look of parents and school principals. Moreover, inadequate support given by Addis Ababa basketball federation was very prominent one. The finding in the study points out that most of the player began to play basketball very late in life between 15-17 years due to this and other the problems the Current, status of school basketball is ill with so much complicated problems.Item Physical Education Practical Class Management Problems and Teachers Coping Strategies in The Case of Some Selected Private and Public Preparatory Schools of Kirkos Sub City(Addis Abeba university, 2011-06) Firdawoke, Amare; Wolde, Bezabih(PhD)The aim of this study was to identify physical education teacher’s practical class management problems and their coping strategies in selected private and public preparatory schools of Kirkos sub city. Data was collected through questionnaire and observation checklist. A total of 297 respondents participated as the source of data. 4 Principals, 10 teachers and 283 students were involved in the study. The data collected were organized, analyzed, tabulated and interpreted using simple percentage. As far as major findings of the study are concerned, significant majority of the respondents stated their view that physical education teachers were not effective in employing classroom management components such as applying classroom rules, motivating learner, organizing students for various instructional task, monitoring and providing feed back. Besides, some major problems that affect the implementation of classroom management were also found. The major identified problems were inadequacy of instructional resources and facilities, lack of comfortable play ground, lack of teacher’s skill to promote classroom management, problem of large class size, applying classroom rules and student’s disciplinary problems. Finally, the last section of the study deals with recommendations that are sought to practical in solving the problems identified in the studyItem Practice and Challenges on The Development of Handball in Amhara Regional State: with Specific Reference to the Three Administrative Cities(Addis Abeba university, 2011-06) Teshome, Zemenu; Belay, Mebratu(Assistant Professor)The main purpose of the study was to assess practice and challenges of handball sport in the three metropolitan administrative cities of Amhara region. The participants of this research were 100 trainees (randomly selected), 6 coaches, 4 federation officials and 4 sport commission commissioners selected by purposive sampling technique. Interviews with structured questionnaire and record reviews including annual reports were data collection instruments used. Both quantitative and qualitative methods of data analysis have been employed. The data was analyzed by using percentage. As a result, the following major findings were observed from the study. Though most of the trainees reported that they have enough equipment for their training, they had no handball club, shortage of facilities which helps trainees, non functionality of regional and zonal federation officials, the absence of well trend and qualified man power at zonal and regional level in the sport commission office and lack of support from Amhara educational bureau to establish schools handball project. the of support from Amhara educational Bureau absence This in part is due to less attention and focus paid by the sport administrators. There by investigate how the current practice and implication of the project using A descriptive survey method employed to reveal the present situation of practicing in Addis Ababa and the impact of its challenges on today’s club participation sources on the bases of availability sampling for this an extended review of the literature was taken to discuss the different principles and theories of practice and application of projects on the whole world wide and specifically youth handball and other sport projects practiced on the world and Ethiopian context. The subjects of the study were 75 from those 18 of them are federal and regional sport education bureau officers 30 of them are male trainees of the previous six school projects. And 21 of them are to day's player of the three Ethiopian national clubs with their instructor and assistant coaches and six of them are selected from the previous amateur technical committee and current supervisor's .to this effect the respondent sampling varied out through probability sampling techniques to test the basic questions. Finally ,the study has summarized what has already been said and conclusion were drawn from the findings.
