Item Assessing the Impacts of Micro and Small Enterprises on Housing Development and Construction: The case of Addis Ababa with particular reference to Saving Houses Development Enterprise (SHDE) and Housing Development Project Office (HDPO)(Addis Ababa University, 2019-06) Matewos, Gebru; Elias, Berhanu (PhD)Micro and small enterprises (MSEs) are recognized as important vehicles of economic growth, employment creation, and poverty reduction etc. As a result, MSEs occupy a prominent position in the development agenda of Ethiopia. The main objective of this research work focus on impacts of Micro and Small enterprises on housing development and constriction in Addis Ababa. A descriptive research method was used to address the research questions. The research was based on review of relevant literatures and both primary and secondary data were used in order to collect the necessary data. Primary data has been collected through questioner and unstructured interview. The secondary data was collected from different books, thesis, reports, articles, and webs. The total population of the study was 920 individuals in to two housing development programs with 22 project offices (AASHDE with 4 Project offices and AAHDPO with 18 project office) which is used as a stratum. Proportional stratified sampling technique and quota with the help of purposive sampling was used for the selection of 125 individuals from the strata. Following this, key informants are selected from both programs by purposive sampling technique. This study involves 112 individuals and 14/fourteen/ key informant and the collected data was organized in the form of tables and percentages. After the data were collected data were processed, analyzed and interpreted to arrive at real finding. The analysis was based on primary and secondary data collected through administrative type of questionnaires and interviews from officials. Quantitative and qualitative /mixed/ research techniques were employed and analyzed by using statistical package for social science (SPSS-version 16.0.) and STATA soft-ware. The study shows that 46 respondent (41%) disagree on the construction input do not provide within the given period of time by MSEs. The result of the study also shows that respondents who returned questionnaires 20% replied that hiding (ቅሸባ) Raw material is the highest. 19% of respondent also believe that all alternative would be the fact about negative impact of MSEs and 18% of them agreed that supplying poor quality construction input is the drawback of MSEs. Rent seeking and delay on providing input is the 3rd highest response rate on negative effects of the MSEs, which is accounted for 15%. The study also shows, In the inquiry made to explore whether the MSEs operators have or have no knowledge 34 (30%) (The lion share) of the respondent agreed that they have no knowledge about MSEs what they are doing. While 27% of the respondents are agree about the MSEs have knowledge what they are doing. However, based on results, recommendations were proposed. The study recommends further research especially on the negative impact of MSEs on housing development and construction in Addis Ababa.Item The Assessment of Good Urban Governance Practice in Land Administration of Addis Ababa: the Case of Yeka Sub-City(Addis Ababa University, 2015-11) Aimro, Ashenafi; Abagissa, Jemal (PhD)Over the last decade, good governance has become a major area of focus by the government of Ethiopia. However, in reality most of public service institutions call for genuine practices of good governance. The service delivery of those institutions hindered due to the absence of good governance. The objective of the study is to assess the practice of good governance in land administration of Addis Ababa city administration Land Development and Management Office of Yeka sub city. This study tried to identify the perception of customers and employees towards the practice of good governance and customer satisfaction on the service provision of the sub city’s Tenure administration and transitional period service office. Based on the perceptions that obtained from the respondents; the study tried to check on the relationship between the overall customer satisfaction on the office’s service delivery and practice of good governance. In this research the tailored dimensions/principles of good governance are utilized on the Likert scale questionnaire. The five selected principles/dimensions of good governance were taken as variables of good governance. Additionally, to triangulate the responses of respondents qualitative data collected through key informants’ interview and observation. To achieve the research objectives, both explanatory and descriptive research methods were applied. Therefore, the findings of the study revealed that the degradation of office’s service quality has arises from unsatisfactory practice of good governance and/or inadequate quality of good governance of the office. Among the identified root causes of the office’s customer service problems; the citizen charter of the bureau is not in function and most of customers have no idea about the citizen charter, there are inconsistencies on interpreting enacted legislations due to the absence of definite work procedure, the office didn’t provide capacity building training and development schemes, the office did not respond promptly for customers’ complaint and Customers at grass root level didn’t get any opportunity to participate on developing and/or commenting plans, policies, and on evaluating final performances of the office. The study has also come up with important recommendationsItem The Assessment of Solid Waste Management practices in Addis Ababa City: the case of Bole Sub City(Addis Ababa University, 2018-05) Horro, Leta; Jemal, Abagisa (PhD)Solid waste management practices in Bole sub city is un satisfactory and incomplete as illegal dumping of solid waste in open areas, in gullies , river courses and streets seen in daily life of residents. considering this, study is aimed at the overall assessment of the existing solid waste management practices of Addis Ababa city with particular reference to Bole sub city. In order to accomplish these objectives, the researcher used both primary and secondary sources. Bole sub city sanitation administration is the responsible institution to take over solid waste management practices of the sub city. Solid waste management activity in bole sub city takes place in two cycles. The first cycle is door to door collection and transportation of solid waste to transfer stations. This can be done by cooperative partnership associations. The second cycle is transportation of solid waste from transfer station to “koshe” disposal site and can be done by sub city sanitation administration. “Koshe” disposal site is generally described as open and unsanitary landfill that has different problems to environment and the community. The finding of this study revealed that the present status of Bole sub city solid waste management is poor. Institutional related problems, cooperative partnership association related problems, and limited participation of stake holders are the major factors that limits the proper solid waste management practice of Bole sub city.Therefore, the best ways that used to tackle the above problems are: giving training to cooperative partnership association and sanitation administration employees, developing institutional structure that have capacity to implement integrated MSWM approach which recognizes and comprises all stakeholders.Item The Effectiveness of Urban Land Management of Addis Ababa City Administration: Case Study Yeka Sub-city(A.A.U., 2019-06) Solomon, Asmamaw; Terefe, Zeleke (PhD)This study examined effectiveness of urban land management practices and challenges in Addis Ababa City Administration using Yeka Sub-City as a case study. The study design was descriptive case study. Data was collected from primary and secondary sources. Primary data was obtained through questionnaire from 138 selected respondents using simple random sampling technique, and through interviews from key respondents. The key respondentswere selected using non-probability purposive sampling technique. Secondary data involved reviewing relevant published and unpublished reports, procedural manuals and other relevant documents. Data collected through survey questionnaire was entered in to SPSS for statistical analysis, and data collected through interviews were analyzed using narrative description method. This study found that the existing land management and development office Yeka sub city are characterized by a lack of adequate capacity interms professional workers and advanced technologies and infra-structures. It also identified several challenges including, lack of complete inventory of land, , poor coordination among stakeholders, lack of aducate capacity interms workers and equipments, poor or un scientific land use plan, lack well organized land information,poor recording and controlling mechanisms of land resource,lack of clearly defined legal framework to control illegal settlement. The study recommends improving capacity of the land management; and clearly defining role, mandate, and coordination of offices involved in the land management process and scientifically designed land management system.Item Practices and prospects of public participation in local economic development: the case of three selected Woredas in Yeka sub city, Addis Ababa city administration(Addis Ababa University, 2018-06) Girum, H/giorgis; Bikila, Hurissa (PhD)The study dealt with practices and prospects of public participation in local economic development a case of three selected woredas in yeka sub city, Addis Ababa city administration. The objective of the study is to assess the participation of community‟s in local economic development and the outcome. The issues observed to achieve the objective were areas of community participation, institutionalization of participatory practices, substantive coordination of the actors and outcomes of these processes and activities in the selected Woredas of yeka Sub-city. Mixed approach (both Qualitative and Quantitative approach) is used. Semi-structured questionnaire is prepared. In-depth interview, focus group discussion and observation tools were developed and employed to elicit important information from the community and triangulate with secondary and questionnaire data. In general the observations of data results from various sources, the development activities are not sustainable in the sense also that the process didn‟t create sizeable employment to the local community. The participatory local economic development work has not been linked to small and micro enterprises. Therefore, the study concluded with the recommendation that the participatory local economic development work should maintain link between the community, the SMEs and other actors in order to engage in sustainable processes and activities of local economic development in the Sub City selected for this study.
