Item Cell Phone Use and Students’ Achievements: The Case of Chole Secondary School Students, Arsi Zone of Oromia Region, Ethiopia(Addis Ababa University, 2018-06) Adem, Sefiya; Tefera, Daniel (PhD)The main purpose of the study was to assess the effect of cell phones on student academic performance. The study was conducted in Chole Secondary Schools of Arsi Zone in Oromia Region. Stratified random sampling method was used to select the respondents of the study. Among the total of 1502 students enrolled in grades 9 and 10 during 2017/18 academic year, 75% of them were imagined to have mobile phone (1127 students). To select the required sample size (301) from 1127 target Chole Secondary School students enrolled in 2017/18 academic year, simple random sampling technique was employed. The quantitative data was gathered by the help of questionnaire from students and was analyzed by descriptive statistics that consist of percentage, mean and inferential by Pearson chi square test. The qualitative data gathered from interview was analyzed using narrative methods. Survey findings show that the negative perceived effect of mobile phone on academic performance is concerned, thorough analysis of the survey data revealed that to the average 34.12% of the students acknowledged that their mobile phone affect negatively their academic performance as 23.64 % affected positively. In other words, chi-square statistics revealed that level of mobile utilization have statistically significant association with the average grade score of students at less than 0.05. This implies that excessive mobile utilizations have significantly negative impact on the academic performance of secondary school students let alone the other things remain constant. Finally, the researcher likes to recommend that the majority of sample students are under “weak” of students’ academic achievement and too small number of sample students (3%) was among “excellent” group of students’ academic achievement. To curve the situation, the responsible bodies had better to be in a better position of helping students so as to improve their academic performance.Item Compatibility of Interest and Personality Profile of Urban Health Extension Workers with Current Practices in Adis Ketema, Yeka and Gulele Sub Cities, Addis Abeba.(Addis Ababa University, 2014-09) Negash, Kassahun; Tefera, Daniel (PhD)The main focus of the study was to explore the relationship between job performance and initial interest as well as personality of Urban Health Extension Workers in Gulele, Yeka and Addis Ketema sub cities. To arrive at the intended target a descriptive in its nature and a health facility based cross-sectional design was employed and using quantitative approaches. The study participants were women urban health extension workers whose employment period greater than six months. In this study some appropriate statistical tools like percentage, means, standard deviation, correlation and multiple regression method was used. Accordingly results indicated that social, enterprising interest and extrovert personality had correlation with awareness creation; introvert, conventional and investigative occupational interest had positively correlated with documentation. Social occupational interest and extrovert personalities found to be the predictor of the overall achievement of Urban Health Extension workers. However, the community culture of Ethiopia need to be considered as the extrovert people may be taken talkative and unstable which affect the acceptability of the community. Thus, the supervisor advice before deployment of this people and follow up is highly required. Human resources managers and related professionals can use these finding to selecting and appointing Urban Health Extension Workers to achieve the desire goalItem Postpartum Depression and Associated Factors Among Mothers: the Case of Nifas Silk Lafto Sub City Woreda 1 and 2 Health Centers(Addis Ababa University, 2006-06) Teshome, Habrasa; Tefera, Daniel (PhD)The purpose of this study is to determine the prevalence and associated factors of postpartum depression among mothers in Nifas Silk Lafto Sub City, Woreda 1 and 2 health centers. Participants were recruited from the postnatal clinic at Nifas Silk Lafto Sub City, Woreda 1 and 2 health centers. Eligible participants were approached and requested to consent voluntarily to participate in this study. Data was collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed using SPSS version 20.0 software. A total of 300 postnatal mothers were recruited in this study but 295 were analyzed. This study found a prevalence of postpartum depression at 45th day since delivery at 27.8% using K-10 score. 34% of the postnatal mothers were aged between 26-32 years. 82% were married and 27.8% were high school complete. 78% were not in any form of employment. 39.8% were primigravida or first time mothers.33.6% pregnancy was unplanned. Unemployment (r=0.8,P< 0.001), parity (r=0.7,P< 0.01), Income (r=0.7,P< 0.0001) and social support (r=0.7,P< 0.001) were statistically significantly associated with Postpartum Depression. No significant statistical association between Infant sex (r=0.48,P<0.05) and postpartum depression was found. It is important for the public to be aware of the magnitude of the postnatal depression. A questionnaire, practice and challenge scales were administered to a ramloll! sample of 38 male and 6 female career counselors. In addition, satiojaction scale was also administered to a random sample of 167 female & 165 male trainees. 7'-test, cil i-sijuare, ()11 <' Way ANOVA & TukeylKramer (IX) post hoc mUltiple comparisons was employed in the dala analysis. The study found out encouraging practice of career counseling service in the foul' dimension of career counseling practice. In helping trainees to identify their interest, values ami abilities 68.18% of career counselors rated their practice as adequate and on awareness creation activities, 68.18% of career counselors believed that their practice as encouraging Concerning career counselors effort to help trainees handle their educational and vocational problel11s 75% of th el11 lrere .IiJund to be help.litl in identifying and handling educational and vocational problel11s. With regard to the provision of career information to their trainees, 81 .82% of career counselors appreciated their activities. Statistically significant difference were observed between less & beller-experienced career counselors in providing .career counseling service except the identification of trainees ' interest, values and abilities. In all statistically significant results, beller-experienced career counselors provide improved activities. In addition, in facing the challenge the study failed to reveal statistical significant relat ionship(X2 = 0.14, df =1, p> 0.05) between less and beller experienced career counselors. Finally, implication, summary, conclusion and recomll1endation were lI1ade.Item The Status and Contribution of Volunteerism to Highly Vulnerable Children in Addis Ketema Sub City Selected Government Primary Schools of Addis Ababa(Addis Ababa University, 2019-03) Alebachew, Mastewal; Tefera, Daniel (PhD)The purpose of this research was to assess the status and contribution of volunteer work in the selected primary schools in enhancing the educational enrollment and attendance of HVC. To assess the status of volunteerism in selected primary school the level of school community engagement, motivation, contribution for educational enhancement and challenges of performing volunteering service was part of the finding. The data were collected by self- administer open ended and scale questions. The open-ended items explored about the demographic characteristic, level of volunteerism, challenges encountered in voluntary work and the contribution of volunteerism in the learning enhancement of highly vulnerable children. To triangulate the result FGD for qualitative data were used and assessed the contribution of school volunteerism for educational enhancement and helped to strengthen the responses in scaled and open-ended questions. The participants were 89 primary education first cycle teachers and management staffs from four primary schools of Addis Ketema government primary schools. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistical methods using percentage from frequency count to see the states and contribution of volunteer services. Both the percentage count and FGD revealed 90 % of the first cycle selected primary school of volunteerism staff members engaged in volunteer activities and the main actors were teachers. In the case of motivation the driving factor for school community for volunteerism was Altruism. The volunteerism engagement of the school community help HVC in improving their attendance and reduce the food problem since volunteers play a vital role in school feeding. When volunteers perform their activity lack of training was the one raised by most volunteers.Item Test Construction Skill and Assessment of Factors Affecting Test Analysis and Evaluation: The Case of Three Selected High Schools in Addis Ababa(Addis Ababa University, 2011-06) Kuma, Meseret; Tefera, Daniel (PhD)The purpose of this study was to determine to what extant teacher made tests were effective. The research also focused on identifying the factors that inhibit analysis and evaluation of test by high school teachers of Nifas silk sub city. Moreover, qualitative description of the test was made by analysis of the test papers the teachers set or prepared using the principle of test construction checklist. In addition, by using questionnaire, relevant data were collected from the teachers. Furthermore, interview was carried out to gather data from school principals about the over all condition of the schools and about the factors that limits the teachers from making post test analysis. The finding of this research indicated that teacher made test qualities were not good in terms of the difficulty level and discrimination power. The qualitative data analyses have also shown that most of the test items were not constructed as per the principle of test construction. The finding farther demonstrated that teachers were not in positions to make post test analysis. Finally, it is recommended that to minimize the problems associated with test construction; teachers should be encouraged to engage in test item analysis
