Item An Assessment of the effect of Group Cohesion in Self-Help Groups Functioning: The Case of Self-Help Groups in Addis Ababa(Addis Ababa University, 2024-06) Samrawit Afework; Mulat AsnakeSelf-help groups (SHGs) are small, voluntary associations of poor individuals from the same socioeconomic background. These groups come together to utilize mutual aid and self-help to address their shared difficulties. Studying group cohesion benefits the sustainability of the group and the achievement of their objectives. It is evident that group cohesion plays a crucial role in sustaining volunteers and achieving their goals. The general objective of this study was to assess group cohesion and the factors associated with it in self-help groups in Addis Ababa. Both quantitative and qualitative approaches were employed. A cross-sectional survey was used as the quantitative method, while Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) and Key Informant Interviews (KIIs) were conducted as the qualitative approach to reinforce the quantitative findings. A single population proportion sample size technique was applied, resulting in a sample size of 96 individuals out of a total of 1,430. The KIIs and FGDs were conducted simultaneously. The results showed that in the Yeka sub-city, 82.3% (n=79) of the self-help group members demonstrated group cohesion, while 17.7% (n=17) indicated weak group cohesion. Overall, 75% of the group members exhibited cohesion among team members. Group members who received family support had a 26% greater likelihood of sustaining their membership. The self-help groups demonstrated strong cohesion due to positive relationships among members, trust, and transparent management. Decisions were made collaboratively within the group. However, the groups lacked a common goal that could be shared among all members. Key Words: Self-help group, group cohesion, and cohesion.Item Attitudes of Counselors towards Religion and Spirituality in Counseling Services and their Practices(Addis Ababa University , 2020-11) Beimnet Alebachew; Mulat AsnakeThe purpose of this study was to examine the attitude of counselors towards the role of religion and spirituality for counseling services and their practice in different counseling centers of Addis Ababa. Mixed methods research design was used to address the objectives of the study. The data were collected from 117 counselors of different counseling institutions using an adopted scale of Duke Religion Index and, the role of religion and spirituality in practice scale (RRSP). In addition, a semi-structured interview was used with five counselors. To analyze the data frequency, percentage, means scores, Mann-Whitney U test and Spearman rho statistic were computed. The findings of the study revealed that majority of counselors had positive attitude towards the role of religion and spirituality for counseling services. It also showed that most of counselors practice religion and spiritual issues in their counseling services. Though, the qualitative result presented that counselors didn’t practice religion and spirituality in counseling services. The findings from Mann- Whitney U test indicated that there is no significant difference in attitude towards the role of religion and spirituality in counseling services among counselors of different gender and age. However, significant difference was found in attitude towards the role of religion and spirituality in counseling services among counselors of educational status. Furthermore, a Mann- Whitney U showed that there is no significant difference in practicing religion and spirituality in counseling services among counselors of different gender, age and educational status. Results from Spearman rho Statistic analysis also indicated that counselor’s religiosity was significantly and positively correlated with counselor’s attitude towards the role of religion and spirituality in counseling services and with counselor’s practice of religion and spirituality in counseling services. However, weak positive correlation was found between counselor’s attitude towards the role of religion and spirituality in counseling services and counselor’s practice of religion and spirituality in counseling services. Based on the study findings, the researcher thus recommended for counselors to update themselves with short and long term religious and spiritual related trainings.Item Bullying victimization and self-efficacy among children in selected Government Primary Schools of Arada sub city, Addis Ababa.(Addis Ababa University, 2018-06) Tsion Tesfaye; Mulat AsnakeBullying victimization among children is burning issue in the present society; particularly in schools it is well known that bullying victimization is one of the problems that need special attention. This study was conducted on this issue with particular focus on selected governmental school students with in age range of 12-15 years. It specifically attempted to examine the level of bullying victimization, in relation to self-efficacy and gender. Out of a total population size of 758 students in 12-15 age categories, of these 228 students were randomly selected. On data collection Forms of bulling scale (FBS) and self-efficacy questionnaire for children (SEQ-C) were also adapted. Correlation, chi-square and one sample t-test were used to analyze the data. Findings indicated that bullying victimization in these governmental schools has high occurrence throughout the year. From all participants reported about their exposure of bullying throughout this academic year those who experienced bullying by others are 44.3% (n=101). The level of bullying victimization shows that there is high relation between being female and bullying victimization. In an Attempt to examine the relationship between bullying victimization and self-efficacy the result shows they are inversely related. They affect each other being a cause for their occurrence as dependent and independent factors. By comparing the victims self-efficacy (M= 85.42, SD=19.04) with the non-victim self-efficacy (M=94.14, SD=13.3) it is found to be there is a significant difference between mean of the victim and non-victim self-efficacy t (228) = -7.45, p<0.05. So without age discrimination these governmental schools children are exposed to bullying victimization and diminished self-efficacy. Therefore, these governmental schools should focus on the issue of bullying victimization and work on the development of student‟s self-efficacy .This could be done through incorporating bullying in students text books, involving students in tasks which develop self-efficacy, organizing anti bullying events and organizing awareness creation seminars that include parents. Attempts were made to explain these findings and implications were also drawn for practical intervention and future researchItem Burnout and its Coping Mechanisms among Health Workers in St. Paul’s Hospital, Addis Ababa(Addis Ababa University, 2023-01) Zewditu Sisay; Mulat AsnakeThe purpose of this study was to assess burnout and its coping mechanisms among health workers. The study was conducted in St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College, in Gulele sub city Addis Ababa. The study aimed at exploring the prevalence of burnout faced by health workers working in SPHMMC, identify burnout level between departments, identifying coping strategies used by respondents to cope with stressful situations in their day to day life, identify coping strategies based on gender, and provide recommendation. The target populations of this study were professional nurses and midwives employed in SPHMMC. The study involved a quantitative research, and stratified random sampling technique that was used to select the respondents of the study, the 55 departments of the hospital further stratified in to three groups, high flow, mild flow, and low flow on the base of the amount of patients they provide service to. Among the total of 972 nurses and midwives who are active in their work, 312 were selected to be participant of this study and to select the participants Solvin’s formula was used which is a random sampling technique. However, because of non-response from 312 questionnaires distributed 288 were gathered and used for the study. The data was gathered using a questionnaire, by adapting Maslach’s Burnout Inventory and COPE Inventory scales. Then the data was analyzed using a descriptive statistics that consist of frequency, and percentage, as well as computing variables by comparing means using independent sample t-test and one way ANOVA. Finding of the study showed that, there is a medium level of exhaustion (44.1%), and low level of de personalization (58.3%), and a high level of personal achievement in respondents (53.1%), as a result the study concludes that there is no burnout in SPHMMC. The study findings on the level of difference between the strata’s shows that burnout level between the three strata does not have a significant difference (F2, 228 = 2.265, .176, and .816, p > .005), as a result, equal variance was assumed. Further, because the findings indicate that there is no burnout problem, the coping strategy of participants assessed separately to other stressful situations. And the study discovered that health care workers in SPHMMC use more problem focused strategy to cope with burnout in their work with a 2.6498 mean. The study further assess coping strategy based on gender and find that; for problem focused coping, there were significantly no differences between male and female, as such there is equal variance. For emotion focused coping the result indicate that there are significant differences, hence, there is no equal variance between male and female. And f for avoidance coping also the result shows significant differences, therefore, there is no equal variance between male and female respondents in using avoidance coping strategy.Item Depression Among Women Offenders in Kality Correctional Center Addis Ababa: Prevalence and Contributing Factors(Addis Ababa University, 2018-10) Tsigie Tefera; Mulat AsnakeThe objective of the study was to determine the prevalence and contributing factors for depression among women inmates in Kality Correctional Center based on the existing difference by their age, having children and the length of incarceration. Quantitative approach specifically cross- sectional survey design was employed to achieve the objectives of this study. One hundred thirteen (males= 56, 49.6% and females=57, 50.4%) counseling service providers participated in the study. From a total of 26 counseling organizations 20 of them selected by using simple random sampling method. All Available counseling service providers who work in these organizations were taken. Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21) was utilized in the current study. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics including frequency and percentage and inferential statistics such as Independent sample t-test, one-way analysis of variance and Pearson product moment correlation. The result showed that 54%, 74.3% and 43.4% of the respondents were at mild, moderate, severe and extremely severe level of depression, anxiety and stress respectively. The study also found that there were no statistically significant gender differences on levels of depression, anxiety and stress. The present study also suggested that there was no statistically significant difference between BA degrees and MA holders and above on level of anxiety and stress. However, respondents having BA degree had high level of depression than MA holders and above. On the other hand, this study found that no statistically significant mean difference on level of depression and stress among respondents from different age groups. Finally, with regard to the relationship between years of work experience and depression, anxiety and stress; the finding of this study noted that years of work experience has statistically weak positive association with anxiety and stress whereas depression has negative weak association with years of work experience. According to the results of this study we can conclude that majority of the respondents could be a t risk of depression and anxiety. We can also conclude that the nonsignificant differences found between DASS scores of counseling service providers in gender might be due to experiencing similar activities and working under similar circumstances. It is also possible to say BA degree holders experience more depressive symptoms than MA holders. Up on the present study, it can be also concluding that displaying this symptom is related to different personal and social factors either directly or indirectly. Unlike depression, stress and anxiety scores were positively correlated to years of work experience. Up on the findings of the present study the researcher recommend that stakeholders should develop strategies in place to identify and support all counseling service providers suffering from depression and anxiety and attention should be given for counseling service providers having BA degree through providing additional courses and trainings.Item Gender Based Violence on Female Cadets: Prevalence and Contributing Factors in Ethiopian Police University College(Addis Ababa University, 2019-07) Felegush Nigatu; Mulat AsnakeThe major objectives of this research was to investigate the prevalence and contributing factors of gender based violence against female cadet officers in Ethiopian police University College. PAULOS Millennium Medical College(Addis Ababa University, 2021-07) Aberehet Girmay; Mulat AsnakeDialysis is available as an alternative remedy for renal impairment, however, kidney transplantation is generally the preferred treatment as it tends to extend life-span and lead to an improved quality of life, in addition to being more cost-effective than dialysis. This is primarily due to the significant limitations caused by dialysis, many of which can be resolved by Kidney transplantation. The general objective of this study was to explore psychosocial experiences of kidney transplant patients before and after transplant at St. Paul‟s Millennium Medical College, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. A total of ten participants were included using the purposive sampling method. Interviewer administered semi-structured data collection instrument made up of open and closed ended questions were used. Careful verbatim transcriptions of the gathered data were done. Data were analyzed with Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. It‟s found that loss of freedom, uncertainty about timely transplant, social isolation, economic crisis, distracted self-image, and lowered elf-esteem emerged as psychosocial challenges during dialysis. Re-birth, thankfulness, social bond, liberty from dialysis, self-efficacy and social support were emerged as positive psychosocial experiences whereas dependency, fear of the future, adherence challenge, and regret emerged as negative psychosocial experiences. The researcher concluded that compared with dialysis, life after receiving a kidney is pleasant and enabling though it is not without challenges. While patients developed psychosocial crisis they become non-compliant with the treatment. The study recommends that every concerned stakeholder including government, hospitals and different concerned authorities should take part in supporting the dialysis and kidney transplant patients in order to address those individuals‟ psychosocial experiences.Item Psychosocial Problems of Families Caring for Relatives with Mental Illness and Their Coping Strategies at Amanuel Mental Specialized Hospital(Addis Ababa University, 2019-01) Serkalem Getaneh; Mulat AsnakeFamily members play a major role in providing care-giving assistance to patients with mental illness and while providing care they may experience considerable amount of distress and poor quality of life, especially when they are not able to cope with the stress associated with the process of care giving. Hence this research was intended to investigate parent-adolescent conflict as a function of adolescent sex, sub-stage, parents’ educational level. Moreover, whether adolescent sex and sub stages affect or influence was investigated on 100 research participants in Dejach Belay Zeleke Secondary School. Descriptive and inferential statistics were employed for data analysis. The study found that academic and disciplinary issues of conflict were found to be the sources of conflict between parents and adolescents. The sex and age difference over domains of conflict were found to be not significant though, the male participants observed as conflict makers than females except in autonomy issue. Similarly, age range 14-16 was found to be more conflict makers over domains of conflict than 17-19 years old participants except in autonomy issue. There is no relationship between academic issue of conflict and educational level of father. The relationship of disciplinary, autonomy and conversational style issues of conflict with parental educational level (father and mother) was found to be weakItem The Relationship between Depression Symptoms and Substance Use among High School Students in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia(Addis Ababa University, 2025-10) Yeron Melkamu; Mulat AsnakeThis study investigated the relationship between depressive symptoms and substance use (tobacco, alcohol, and marijuana) among 365 students from Bole Senior Secondary School and Lem General Secondary School in Bole Sub-City, Addis Ababa. Data were collected using the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) and the Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test (ASSIST), and analyzed through Pearson’s correlation, t-test, and ANOVA. Results revealed a significant (p < .001) moderate positive correlation between depression and substance use, with females reporting higher depression symptoms than males (p < .001). These findings highlight the need for integrated mental health and substance use prevention programs and gender-sensitive interventions.Item Value Priorities and Academic Achievement Among Adolescent Students of Oromia Boarding School in Bishoftu(Addis Ababa University, 2023-06) Mideksa Mekonin; Mulat AsnakeThe major purpose of this study was to examine the value priorities and its relationship with adolescents’ academic achievement by studying with sex differences in value priorities among male and female students in ODASBS at Bishoftu town, of Oromia Region. The study assessed the relationship between adolescents’ value priorities and their academic achievement based on Schwartz 10 basic universal values as a guiding theoretical framework. To that effect the correlational design of quantitative research approach was employed. Out of 353 student’s a total of 286 participants were selected using census approach after excluding 67 non-Afaan Oromo language speakers and those who have participated in the pilot study. The study used quantitative data collection tools in the form of questionnaire to collect the socio-demographic data, including self-report average semester marks was used to determine students’ academic achievement and PVQ-21 developed by Shalom Schwartz was adapted through translation was used to measure the ten basic values. To address the research questions formulated in the study, data were analyzed using descriptive statistics mean, standard deviation, frequencies, and percentage, Pearson correlation coefficients, ANOVA, and independent t-test statistical tests. The findings revealed that self-direction with mean of 3.01 (SD = 1.32), security mean of 3.23 (SD = 1.51), stimulation mean of 3.30 (SD = 1.48), benevolence mean of 3.43 (SD = 1.65), and hedonism mean of 3.71 (SD = 1.89) values are the top five preferred values, whereas the study showed that three values such as; power with the mean of 5.70 (SD = 2.38), universalism mean of 5.02 (SD = 1.91), and achievement mean of 4.91 (SD = 2.40) values are the most least preferred values of adolescent students of ODASBS in Bishoftu town. Concerning the academic achievements of adolescents, about 5.6% of the students scored 96 – 100 average marks and 11.9% of them scored below 80(the minimum cut off score set by the school for promotion to the next grade level). Fathers educational level has shown as it makes significant variation on adolescent’s self-direction values, while none of the ten values showed significant variations as a function of mother’s educational level and similarly adolescents value priorities didn’t showed variation as a function of their parents’ economic status. Achievement value is identified as the only value that counted for the differences in value priorities between male and female adolescent students. Adolescents value priorities has showed partial alignment with the expected value preservation by the Ethiopian General Education Curriculum Framework (2020), which indicates further intervention on inculcating socially and nationally desirable values. Moreover, based on the results of the current study, the following conclusion and implications were drawn. Firstly, most adolescent students in ODASBS in Bishoftu town are academically high achievers based on the average marks they have earned while attending grade nine and ten. Secondly, self-direction, security, and stimulation are the most highly preferred values by adolescents while power, universalism and achievement values are the least preferred values where these in turn implies that the Boarding school promotes self-direction values through fostering the act and though of creativity, exploration and competitiveness among students and the current findings confirmed this as an objective meeting the school strategy in producing academically excelling students. Lastly, adolescents value priorities didn’t show significant correlation with their academic achievement, but the type of highly preferred values such as self-direction are considered as one of the implications of the school strategy in driven students to acquire such value.Item Victimization and Mental Health Problems of Children and Adolescents in Gondar Town, North Western Ethiopia(Addis Ababa University, 2015-04) Mulat Asnake; Teka ZewdieVictimization and mental health problems of children and adolescents are major concerns of almost all societies worldwide. Previous studies have documented the magnitudes of the problems of victimizations and mental health problems in children and adolescents. However, in most cases those studies focused on few types of victimization and mental health problems. Accordingly, the major purpose of this study was to estimate prevalence of victimizations and mental health problems, identify factors that contribute to victimizations, and examine the association between victimization and mental health problems of children and adolescents in the elementary schools of Gondar town, North West Ethiopia. Analysis was made on a sample of 403 children and adolescents, randomly drawn from the target population using stratified sampling technique. Adapted measures of Juvenile Victimization Questionnaire (JVQ) and Achenbach Systems of Empirically Based Assessment (ASEBA) were employed to gather data on victimization experiences and mental health problems respectively. Percentage was used to determine the prevalence of victimizations and mental health problems whereas series of logistic regression analyses were run to examine the contributions of independent victimizations for the various dimensions of mental health problems of the respondents. The major findings indicate that nearly 80 % of the respondents experienced victimizations. The odds of males experiencing victimization was found to be 2.41(95% CI=1.41-4.12) times more than females and the probability of the occurrence of any form of victimization was higher for those who came from low income families by 3.23 (95% CI =1.06-9.80) times than respondents from high income families. The proportion of overall mental health problems among the respondents was 14.4%. Child maltreatment was found to be significantly contributing to manifestations of the symptoms of overall mental health and internalizing problems with odds ratios of 2.6 (95% CI=1.16-4.39) and 2.52 (95% CI=1.42-4.49) respectively. Conventional crime was significantly linked with internalizing problems with OR=.2.95 (95% CI=1.37-6.34). Furthermore, poly-victimizations were significantly associated with any mental health,X 2 (1,N=403)=17.02, p<.001;internalizing, χ 2 (1,N=403)=17.46,p<.001; and externalizing problems, χ 2 (1,N=403)=11.36, p<.05.The study concludes that exposures to victimizations put children and adolescents at the risks of developing mental and behavioral health problems. Finally, psycho-legal service implications and issues that require further inquiry are identified
