Item Assessing Occupational Health, Safety and Environment Management Practices and Challenges at the New Headquarter Building Construction Project of Commercial Bank of Ethiopia(Addis Ababa University, 2021-02-13) Seid, Mekonnen; Atara, Adane(PhD)The management of occupational health, safety and environment has become today an issue that is pertinent and crucial to all organizations across all industries especially for the construction industry. The safety and health of workers and society surrounding any project should not be taken as a luxury but rather a necessity. This case study therefore, aims to find out the current practices of occupational health, safety and environment management at the new headquarter building construction project of Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) with a view to identify key challenges and problems in implementing and practicing an effective management of occupational health, safety and environment. In pursuing this objective, a descriptive research design was used and obtained the relevant primary data through online questionnaire survey and semi structured interview. The questionnaire survey data was analyzed using SPSS software and presented in frequency and percentages. Consequently, the study result revealed that, though management of occupational health, safety and environment is well practiced by the contractor, it is practiced unsatisfactorily in the project by the client and consultant organizations. Despite the overall project health, safety and environment management practice is not satisfactory, it is found that provision and utilization of key health, safety and environment practices that complies with occupational health, safety and environment requirement were performed in the project workplace. Lack of top management commitment is the major challenges to the implementation of occupational health, safety and environment management system in the given project. Further findings of this study show that among the factors to occupational health, safety and environment hazards in the given construction project, falling objects from working platforms, hoists and scaffolds have immense contribution to occupational health, safety and environment hazards.Item Assessing Project Management Practices Of Ngo’s Aid/Development Project: A Case Of Gudina Tumsa Foundation(Addis Ababa University, 2019-07) Hezkias, Natnael; Atara, Adane(PhD)There have been different kinds of research carried out on project management (PM) practices addressing performance gaps in developmental projects. The Project Management Institute (PMI) has developed the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) as the best practices in managing projects over the past decades. The main aim of this paper is to assess the project management practices of aid/development projects: A case of Gudina Tumsa foundation. Finding out which practices they are using, is these practices were based on the ten knowledge areas. The descriptive research design was used in the study and the census survey was used because the participants were few. Both the quantitative and qualitative research approach was used the study. The data obtained was analysed using mean and percentages the knowledge areas were further putted in SD. The research instrument used for this paper is both primary and secondary data, Primary data was collected using a questionnaire and a semi-structured interview secondary data was used from different documents from the organization and other book and journals. The questionnaire was distributed to all the members in the organization out of 27 individuals 23 (85 %) of them properly filled and return it. The researcher interviewed the program officer and top managers, and some board members of the organization. From the finding, it can be understood that some of the knowledge areas were properly managed and used but some have not been properly managed although they have managed some of them it was traditionally. This paper suggests that the organization should implement different projects based on project management knowledge areas and using each knowledge area processes to formally implement it.Item Assessing Scope Management Practices in New Product Development Projects: The Case of dVentus Technologies(Addis Ababa University, 2021-10-29) Alesew, Getaneh; Atara, Adane(PhD)A project's success depends on its management. The unlimited market need should be compromised with the limited resource through an application of proper project management technique. Throughout all the phases of a project, the management team takes care of the time, cost and quality constraints of a project. There are several knowledge areas that a project manager must understand and implement in order to be successful in those constraints. This study was conducted to assess one, but most critical knowledge area of project management (project scope management) on New Product Development projects of dVentus Technologies. It examined how dVentus Technologies manage the scope of its New Product Development projects through the analysis of the elements of project scope management (Plan Scope, Define Scope, Collect Requirements, Create WBS, Validate Scope and Control Scope). A descriptive research design was employed for the study. A Census of the whole population has been involved in the data collection. Accordingly, primary data was collected through interviews and questionnaires from 42 employees working in New Product Development projects of dVentus Technologies. A mix of both qualitative and quantitative approaches were implemented to collect the primary data from respondents. Additionally secondary data obtained from a review of related literature and archived documents were utilized. After a reliability measurement of the variables by Cronbach alpha, the descriptive statistics and mean was computed to interpret the results. Accordingly, the case organization has a major problem of collecting requirements and controlling the scope with a mean value being below average. This indicates an absence of a well-organized requirement management plan resulting in uncontrolled modification of project scope. The study also touched on the challenges for effective implementation of project scope management in the case organization and found that setting unrealistic deadlines makes scope management the most challenging. The recommended solutions for the identified problems are listed in the last chapter of this document. The study recommends future research in the causes and effects of the problems identified. As there are remote teams working in NPD projects, Communication management would also be an interesting issue next to innovation and technology managementItem An Assessment Of Construction Contract Administration Practices In Concrete Pole Factory Expansion Projects Of Kabew Construction Private Limited Company(Addis Ababa University, 2019-07) Teshome, Martha; Atara, Adane(PhD)This project work is about an assessment of construction contract administration practices in concrete pole factory expansion projects of Kabew Construction Private limited company. Thus, the researcher came up with a major research gap of which the effectiveness of the force account contract administration on the project’s time, cost, quality management, team members accountability, authority and handling of variation of work . The methodology used convenience sampling & was designed as semi-structured interview and two principal ways of conducting research are used for the analysis; namely; through the methods of literature review and interviewing “experts” in the subject; where, narrations method is used for the reformulation of stories presented by respondents taking into account context of each case and different experiences of each respondent with content analysis. For triangulation, secondary data were also greatly used .The qualitative research came up with a finding that principal or owner commitment, competence & experience of the contract administrator, understanding contract documents, frequent meetings & communications, regular quality assurance & control, adequate human resource capacity & appropriate choice of contract delivery method had a significant impact in the execution of the projects with regard to the contract administration of the expansion projects. Moreover, critical success factors in contract management that can provide valuable recommendations for improving organizational success in managing projects & contracts are covered. Disadvantages of the force account construction contract administrations which have significantly affected the progress of the expansion project and other related issues are properly assessed.Item Assessment of Construction Safety and Health Management Practice in Building Construction Projects in Addis Ababa: In case of Yotek Construction P.L.C(Addis Ababa University, 2019-08) Delessa, Meti; Atara, Adane(PhD)The construction industry has been seen as one of the hazardous industries. This is because the industry has a poor health and safety performance record compared to other industries all over the world. Labor law in every nation provides that it is the duty of an employer to ensure that every worker employed works under satisfactory, safe and healthy conditions. Health and safety at construction sites deals with both physical and psychological well being of workers on construction sites and other persons whose health is likely to be adversely affected by construction activities. The major objectiveof this research is to present findings of health and safety management practices in building construction recently constructed in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia under YOTEK construction plc. 60 of employees were selected for the study for which a questionnaire was distributed and additionally documented sources were looked for more accurate data including site observation. CDD focuses on strengthening the capacity of rural communities to play a greater role in their own development. While the CDD approach successfully generated new political rationalities and governmental technologies, the ability of development programming driven by social capital concepts to empower marginalized sections of society remains in question .For the accomplishment of this research, the study were employed descriptive Survey design in which the selections of the respondents were carried out by using purposive sampling techniques and select 51respondents ( 11 from region,25 from Mobile Support Team & 14 from woreda(district) who participated in implementation of CDD approach in Oromia region. Closed ended questionnaires using Likert 5 scales distributed to these selected 51 respondents. The response rate was 45. The data collected was analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20, which is appropriate for this descriptive statistics. For statistical interpretation, descriptive and inferential statistics were used. The findings indicate that the independent variables community leadership, practice of CDD approach, community empowerment and community participation have positive correlation with the dependent variable performance of CDD projects. The study recommends educating the target communities in order to include marginalized and vulnerable groups in positions of leadership, empower communities by encouraging them to make their own decisions and provide informed consent, better to conduct separate discussions for women and youth in order their need and voice be heard and engage communities directly through public calls for meetings without establishing community channels in mobilizing communities to participate in the project.Item Assessment of Leadership Practice in Construction Projects: A Case of Ethiopian Construction Design and Supervision Works Corporation(Addis Ababa University, 2021-06-15) Negash, Endale; Atara, Adane(PhD)In today’s world of dynamic and multitasking development, leadership has a pivotal role for any organization to succeed and it is much more important to the construction industry. The significance of effective leadership is given very little attention in the construction industry projects. The basic anecdote I noticed when passing through past researches is that there is insufficiency of leadership curriculum in the current Ethiopian higher institutions for engineering students while leaders of construction projects are still selected from those disciplines. This paper aims to assess the leadership practice in building construction projects in case of Ethiopian Construction Design and Supervision Works Corporation. This company is the best representative of the industry since it is regarded as the largest and most experienced of the engineering consulting firms in Ethiopia. The paper assesses the crucial attributes of transactional and transformational leadership styles practiced by the leaders of construction projects together with the challenges of their practicality. More emphasis is given on determining which crucial attributes from both styles are practiced most and which ones are practiced less. Twelve ongoing projects undertaken in the company involving more than one-hundred million Ethiopian birr are selected for this study. Data is gathered from 80 respondents comprised of project managers, construction supervisors, top level managers and project team members. This study adopts descriptive type of design to answer the objective of the research. It uses both qualitative and quantitative methods. Data is gathered both from primary and secondary sources. Primary data gathered from questionnaires, interviews and closed ended questions and Secondary data gathered from the case company documents, files, archives etc. The study found out that no single leadership style stood out to be highly practiced rather a number of attributes from each style were practiced and some crucial attributes from those leadership styles are rarely practiced in the industry. Generally, this research endeavor is keen to reach at vital leadership attributes being practiced and being missed in the industry and contribute to the effective leadership of the construction industry.Item Assessment of Mobile Banking Practice and its Challenges in the case of Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, South Addis Ababa District(Addis Ababa University, 2018-12-18) Behailu, Berhan; Atara, Adane(PhD)With the convergence of banking services and mobile technologies, users are able to conduct banking services at any place and at any time through mobile banking. This is, therefore; mobile banking has a vital advantage for customers. The main purpose of this study is to assess the practice of mobile banking and its challenges in Commercial Bank of Ethiopia. In so doing, the research used the extended TAM Model, which deals with the factors influencing the practice of mobile banking i.e., Convenience (perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use), perceived trust, perceived risk, perceived cost. Moreover, the research used infrastructure as independent variable to examine its effect of the practice of mobile banking. Data for the study was collected through closed ended questionnaire which were distributed for 330 respondents and analysis of findings are done based on 313 complete responses. The study employed mean, frequency and t-test extracted from SPSS for analysis. Accordingly, the research has found that customers in the CBE perceived that mobile banking service is useful and easy to use. Customers who are using mobile banking service (86.9%) perceives that cost and risk doesn’t affect the practice of mobile banking, whereas, 13.1% of the customers who are not using mobile banking perceives that risk and cost are barriers to use the mobile banking service. In addition, customers at CBE perceive that infrastructure is the most critical factor for the customer to use mobile banking service. Furthermore, the t-test result shows all variables considered have a significant effect on the practice of mobile banking as their probability values are less than 5%.Item Assessment Of Organizational Climate And Employees’ Job Satisfaction In Project Management Context: The Case Of Usaid Joint Emergency Operation Project (Jeop) In Addis Ababa(Addis Ababa University, 2021-03-12) Walelign, Medhanit; Atara, Adane(PhD)Research on the organizational climate is an old realm of studies which goes back as far as the 1930s and it was commenced by the work of Hawthorne who made the subsequent researchers to focus on the psychological aspects of the organization than the physical one. This study also traced this historical development and focused on the relationship between organizational climate and employees’ job satisfaction. For this study, the experiences of the selected branch of the USAID Joint Emergency Operation (JEOP) in Addis Ababa was used. Since the USAID is a renowned international organization with its big project of JEOP, assessing the organizational climate of the project employees' job satisfaction was particularly of interest area of enquiry. To substantially accomplish the study, concurrent mixed method research approach with a cross sectional time frame was employed. Using this study approach, the research tried to address the descriptive and explanatory function of the mixed method research. The research also employed both the quantitative and qualitative types of data and they were analyzed in an integrated manner. Census was used to collect information from all units in the population or a 'complete enumeration' of the population. So, 124 employees were made ready for questionnaires. Findings show that dimensions of the organization had a great effect on the job satisfaction level of the employees. This relationship was shown by using the Pearson linear regression and chi-square analysis. Furthermore, chi-square expound that there is a different job satisfaction and perception of the organization among the employees based on their gender, educational level, job level and tenure. Therefore, the organization should respond to the factors affecting the job satisfaction among the employees by providing a training and development and salary package, among others.Item Assessment Of Project Accountability To Affected People: The Case Of Concern Worldwide Ethiopia(Addis Ababa University, 2021-09-03) Botamo, Betsegaw; Atara, Adane(PhD)This paper is titled as ’’Assessment of the Project Accountability to Affected People: The case of Concern Worldwide’’. Several studies described that both government and international non-governmental organizations works on different development projects to realize socities development. Ethiopia is also one of these countries with poor project execution, number of failed projects and few successful projects. Despite several causes can be enlisted to these inefficiencies, factors related to project management take the lion share. Particulalry, the project identification and selection phases of the project management cycle is the key stage for both the success and failure story of the project. Therefore this study aimed at assessing the project identification and selection processes in selected governmental and International non-governmental organizations in Ethiopia. The research is designed to produce both qualitative and quantitative information through a cross-sectionall study design. A set of criteria was developed to select relevant sample units in government and international non- governmental organizations. 56 respondents are participated on the study. A structured questionnair is designed, distributed and collected using Google online survey form. The finding of the study showed that government projects have less engagenment to stakeholder identification, communication, community need assessment, and participation. Moreover non-government organization gives higher team focus or team selection in the identification phase of the project. Government organizations are also have better feasibility assessment practice than non-governmental organizations. The non-government organizations uses government plan and police as a good source of project identification in addition to other sources and have a good team composition.Besides these, most government projects lack robust project identification and selection compared to non-governmental organizations. Government projects should focus on stakeholder identification; inviting stakeholders to contribute their ideas; the needs of the stakeholder, and communicating with stakeholders before implementing and commissioning the project.Further studies should be done on how team members of government development projects are recruited. Therfore, Peoject identification, screening, selection, feasibility and prefeasibility study sould be done in depth in both non-government and government organizatoions.Item Assessment Of Project Implementation Challenges Case Of Commercial Bank Of Ethiopia Contact Center Project(Addis Ababa University, 2019-06-04) Bedo, Abdisa; Atara, Adane(PhD)The objective of this study is to identify challenges facing the implementation of customer contact center at commercial bank of Ethiopia.
