Item Assessment of Project Management Practice in the Case of Addis Ababa Water and Sewerage Authority Project Office(Addis Ababa University, 2022-09) Lensa Senay; Abdurazak Mohammed(PhD)In developing economies, particularly in a nation like Ethiopia where projects of all sizes and structures are conducted, the application of project management knowledge domains is rapidly growing in importance. Project managers face a variety of problems when following the principles and regulations of project management in the context of public administration, which may have an impact on the project's success. The study attempted to assess the Addis Ababa Water and Sewerage Authority project office's project management approach. The study used a mixed-methods approach that leans more toward qualitative research to meet these objectives. The census was used as a sample strategy since the population was manageable. The collected data were presented and analyzed using SPSS (version 20) statistical software. In general, the study's findings showed that the five issues described above had the greatest impact on the Addis Ababa Water and Sewerage Authority project office's performance in terms of project management practice. These include concerns with project status reporting that are excessive, the delay in document approval, and team members' lack of technical expertise. Therefore, to alleviate these prevailing challenges and to increase their project management knowledge & practice capacity, it is necessary to address the obvious need for project management training that exists in the project offices. In this context, the usage of general manuals like PMBOK may be very beneficial. The effective management of project operations as well as increased monitoring and control of quality processes can both be facilitated by the use of computers and software tools. One method of demonstrating the use of project management may also be to hire qualified project managers. Organizations in the construction sector frequently work on several projects at once to satisfy client expectations, make the best use of available resources, and increase competitiveness. However, managing several projects at once can be difficult because it can lead to quality problems, cost overruns, and schedule delays (Abdul-Rahman, H., & Wang, C., 2011). The aim of this study is to identify the challenges of managing multiple construction projects simultaneously and their effect on cost, schedule, and quality within SI Construction PLC. In this study, qualitative research approach was applied. Semi-structured questionnaires were used to collect data from project managers, site engineers, and other pertinent participants involved in the construction projects through interviews. To support the interview findings, pertinent literature and documentation were also reviewed. The data was analyzed using thematic analysis method identified by (Virginia et al., 2006). The results show that SI Construction PLC faces variety of difficulties while managing multiple projects at once. The distribution of resources, project coordination, communication, reporting practices, time management, stakeholder management, and risk management are some of these challenges. The results provided some important insights. First, it was learned that handling several projects at once had a negative effect on costs. According to the study, cost overruns and delays were frequently caused while managing multiple projects. However, SI Construction's dedication to upholding quality is constant throughout numerous projects; this is because the firm stresses on quality control, and employs extensive quality assurance procedures. Based on the findings, this study offers SI Construction PLC useful suggestions on how to enhance their multi-project management procedures and lessen the negative effects. These suggestions include increasing project monitoring and control procedures, putting in place strong resource allocation strategies, and investigating technical optionsItem The Effect of Quality Management Practices On Road Construction Projects: In the case of Senan Construction Company(Addis Ababa University, 2023-06) Eyerus Bekele; Abdurazak Mohammed(PhD)Quality management practices (QMP) is assessed to determine the effect on road construction projects and the outcome of the intended objective given by the client. A theoretical and empirical study was used in this research to understand and assess definitions, evaluate standards and manuals as well as conceptualize a framework. Quality management is a system composed to ensure the satisfaction of the end user. Quality management processes on road construction therefore are a set of systems ensuring roads are suitable, safe and durable for the user. The quality outcomes should balance present performance objectives with future needs and expectations of the future. This balance could be achieved through excellence in quality management; excellence in this case is a function of effectiveness and efficiency. Quality management process is a superset having independent variables (PQM, SM, EM, and C) that are further affected by other subdivisions. This research assess the effects of QMP on specific road construction projects undertaken by Senan construction company’s 4 road construction projects (Ashewa meda – Urga Building Internal Asphalt Road Project, Assosa – Dilti Road Project, Eliya – Makuye Road Project and Bole – Arabsa Road Project) by measuring the correlation of variables towards affecting the quality outcome of the project objectives set by all stakeholders. Relevant theoretical and empirical topics on variables are synthesized into a questionnaire, and Likert scale was used to evaluate answers of respondents. The questionnaire was delivered to 70 individuals that were part of the projects in concern, from which 55 responses where collected. After analyzing the responses, this research concludes that QMP is directly affected by PMQ, SM, EM and C. In addition it also found out that Senan Construction Company lacks a quality management model creating a gap in SM, EM and C. Employee’s qualitative reply indicates that qualification and training is not given on project quality management directly affecting effectiveness and efficiency on quality outcomes. Communication amongst stakeholders about quality management is not formal, creating a gap between independent variables in executing Quality management on projects. This research recommends that Senan Construction Company should adopt a quality management model to better quality outcomes on future endeavors, training and qualification of employees, and communicate QMP amongst stakeholders in order to stay relevant and competitive in the ever growing construction industry
