Item Assessing the Contributions of Urban Green Spaces for Ecosystem Service in Lideta Sub-City, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia(Addis Ababa University, 2025-05-01) Adinew Mecha Kuda; Aramde FeteneGreen infrastructures are vital for sustainable and continuous urban development, as they contribute to environmental preservation and wellbeing of human life in general for ecosystem services. However, the challenges faced by raped growth of urbanization and makes these infrastructures, leading to the degradation of urban landscapes and ecosystems. Enhancing ecological benefits, pollution control, and UGS biodiversity contributes to a higher quality of life and long-term sustainability. The objective of this study is to assess the contributions of urban green space for ecosystem service in Lideta Sub-City, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The researcher used both qualitative and quantitative research approaches were used in the study. The researcher determined the sample size 400 respondent from the sub city’s, total population of 214,768 people, by using the Yamane’s (1967) formula. In analyzing data SPSS software version 26 (Statistical System for Statistical Analysis) was used which provides descriptive and statistical analysis for analyzing quantitative data. Employing descriptive statistics, correlation, and regression analysis, the study examines variables such as ecological benefits, pollution control, and UGS biodiversity, assessing their influence on quality of life and wellbeing. The analysis reveals a positive and significant correlation between ecological benefits, pollution control, UGS biodiversity, and the overall wellbeing of individuals. The validity and sufficiency of the links between the independent and dependent variables are demonstrated by the suggested model. Further research and the implementation of inclusive and safety measures ensure the of green infrastructures. The study concludes by offering insightful information about the vital role that green infrastructures play in sustainable development as well as useful suggestions for legislators and urban planners looking to improve people's quality of life and wellbeing while successfully protecting and optimizing the advantages of urban green spaces. By examining the users’ perception on the spatial characteristics of the park, the study identifies highly related variables which influence the utilization of the park and gives a recommendation for the optimum use of new and existing parks. This study uses mixed method that aims to explain users’ perceptions and spatial characteristics of the park through case study methodology. It uses both descriptive and explanatory types of research designs. Hamle 19 and Bihere Tsige public parks are selected as a case study based on different selection criteria. Data were collected from a randomly selected park visitors through questionnaire and interview. The data is analyzed using SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences). A statistical procedure was used for the study, and the correlation analysis and the significance of the relationships were tested with a 95 percent confidence level. A total of ten dependent and two independent variables are used to measure the correlation. The results indicate a significant relationship between spatial characteristics and urban park utilization. Ten independent variables were shown to significantly correlate with the dependent variables. And only three and five variables are highly related with the city level and Sub city level parks respectively. However none of the variables are negatively correlated. These elements should be purposefully taken into account during the park design and development process in order to maximize park utilization. Lastly, more research ought to be done to improve the park's qualitative features. However, rapid urbanization has severely impacted these areas, especially during the densification of urban functions. Unplanned growth has led to significant losses in urban landscapes, vegetation, and ecosystems. In develop ing countries, including Ethiopia, the effectiveness of current practices in green space planning and development is being questioned, highlighting the need for improved quality and provision. This study evaluated the availability, accessibility, quality, user preferences, and constraints re lated to urban green spaces in the rapidly urbanizing cities of Debre Berhan and Debre Markos. A mixed–methods approach was employed, utilizing both qualitative and quantitative data. Sam pling techniques included probability and purposive sampling, with data gathered from document reviews, satellite imagery, field surveys, and insights from city administration offices and key informants. Tools for data collection included interviews, questionnaires, and document anal yses, with data processed using software such as SPSS and ArcGIS 10.8. The findings revealed a significant decline in vegetation cover in both cities from 2000 to 2020, with a marked transfor mation of green spaces and agricultural land into built environments. Many users stated that ur ban green spaces are neither accessible nor good quality. The planning of these spaces does not take into account users' preferences and perceptions. Users value green spaces for their recrea tional, aesthetic, and pollution-mitigating benefits. Notably, only quantitative standards were employed for green space planning, while alternative models remain unfamiliar in both cities. iii These results underscore the need for enhanced knowledge and strategies to effectively integrate and manage urban green spaces in rapidly urbanizing areas.
