Item Factors Aggravating Students’ Drop Out in Secondary School of Gida Ayana Woreda of Eastern Wollega Zone(Addis Ababa University, 2018-06) Kefyalw Beyene; Abdulaziz HusseinThe purpose of the study was sought to examine the causes for dropout of students in secondary schools and to indicate the solutions in reducing dropout. It also attempted to investigate the magnitude of dropouts in government secondary schools of Gida Ayana Woreda. In order to attain the objective of the study, descriptive method was employed. The study was carried out on all five secondary schools of Gida Ayana Woreda. The subjects of the study include 75 dropouts,50 teachers, 12 school principals, 15 parent teacher association (PTA) member of school and 2 woreda experts. In aggregate percent of the questionnaires were properly filled in and returned, and data analysis made using descriptive stastices (percentages and frequency). Data from documentary analysis indicated that the rate of dropout in secondary schools of the study area was significantly high and its trend shows increasing. The data further revealed that the dropout problem was more serious in grade nine than grade ten. The findings of the study showed that failure in study hard, lack of interest to learn, frequent absenteeism, low self conception due to previous failure in examination, low employment opportunity in the future were the major problems among individual/personal factors of students. Similarly, low teacher attitude toward students, school distance from pupils home, lack of guidance and counseling, lack of educational materials and lack of gender sensitive facilities were the major problems related to school factor. Additionally, parental factors such as poverty, parental enforcement to agricultural activities, low level of parents education, family size, low level of parent income and low attitudes in formal education were some related problems. To solve these problems the forwarded recommendations were; schools should create awareness program for all communities, provide necessary materials by involving different non government and government body in the systems, giving continuous advice and counseling students. Moreover, discussion with school community, parents and woreda educational expert about students’ problem to create good school environment and to provide learning materials were highly needed.Item Organizational Culture in Government and Private Primary Schools in Woreda one of Akaki Kality Sub City(Addis Ababa University, 2018-06) Mintesinot Kagnew; Abdulaziz HusseinThe purpose of the study is to examine the existing organizational culture of government and private primary schools of woreda one of Akaki Kality sub city, the performance gap which are observed in the schools, the reason behind the entire organizational culture difference among the schools and the best practice that can be taken from both government and private primary schools of the woreda. Comparative research design that involved both quantitative and qualitative approaches was employed. All sample schools principals and the existing two woreda education office supervisors involved as interviewees. Other sample respondents (71 teachers and 4 principals) were selected through simple random sampling technique. Quantitative data were gathered using questionnaire while interview was used to secure qualitative data. That is, the quantitative data gathered from sample schools teacher by administering the standardize questionnaire of Organizational Culture Assessment Instrument (OCAI) that developed by Quinn and Cameron(2006). Interview also conducted with sample schools principals and two woreda education office supervisors. The gathered data also analyzed by using Statistical Procedure for Social Science (SPSS) and the frequency, percentage, mean of the respondents of each groups presented. The t-test also conducted to identify whether there is statistically significant difference among the school. Based on this, according to the respondent teachers both government primary schools of the woreda are have clan culture in which employees’ interpersonal relationship is the forefront issue of the schools. On the other hand the woreda education office supervisors argue that, the private schools have market culture in which the schools viewpoint for everything is from its economic return for their organization. So it is possible to conclude that the government schools are focused on their employees’ personal interest while the private counterparts gave equal emphasis for both of their employees’ personal interest and the result that has to be achieved. Hence, the researcher would like to recommend the government schools that they should; build strong competitive culture among their employees, use their resources efficiently, have detailed job description and strong controlling system. Other government bodies also should make teachers salary increment based on their efficiency.Item Practice and Challenges of Pre-School Education In Nefasilk Lafto Sub City of Addis Ababa(Addis Ababa University, 2014-06) Tsegaye Seifu; Abdulaziz HusseinPre-primary school Education is an area which needs special attention due to it is a place where to build foundation for the children’s successful life-long learning. Consequently the sub sector has a profound impact on the consecutive educational achievements of the children’s long-life. Hence this study is conducted to assess the practical situations and challenges of the sub sector in Nefasilk Lafto Sub City of Addis Ababa. The practices are assessed through main determinant factors which includes: the physical and learning environment that encompass the materials used for children holistic development, Curriculum guideline, Scheduling and Structuring, Teachers know how, teaching learning methodology, assessment used to engage and follow up, Health and Nutrition, the relationships With Parents and Community, administrative issue. The study was conducted by using questionnaire, interview and observation; 250 principals and teachers were draw on for the study through using simple random sampling and the questionnaire were distributed and collected personally via the researcher. It was distributed to thirty nine kindergartens’ principals and teachers from the distributed questionnaires 216 were returned and used for analysis. Interview was conducted with AAEB and NLSCEO preprimary education professionals. To analyzed the date; Frequency, percentage, and mean value have been used to investigate the research objectives and basic questions. The overall results of the survey shows positive connotation i.e. the principals and teachers rate the determinant factors of the pre primary education sector as good. The study was also identifies challenges like, Shortage of trained man power and employee turnover, parent’s limited support to children’s development, government insufficient support, unavailability of text books, Shortage of input materials, and lack of decision making body like board of director for managing KG are some of the threat that could be dimmed the good start. Generally emphasis should be given to the sub sector since it is a foundation for competent future citizens.
