Item Admission Criteria, Overall Curriculum Satisfaction and Academic Performance of Adult learners in Mekane Yesus Management and Leadership College(Addis Ababa University, 2011-10) Terefe, Ayalu; Fanta, Tilahun(Ato)This study was to investigate the relations of Admission Criteria and Overall Curriculum Satisfaction on CGPA Academic Performance in college. The research was done in Mekane Yesus Management and Leadership College (MY-MLC) on adult learners in the regular, extension and summer degree programs. Questionnaire, containing Background Information, Close-ended and Open-ended items as well as interview were used to collect data for the study. Admission and CGPA of respondents were taken from record office. The data collected was analyzed and interpreted using percentages, means and Pearson’s correlation coefficientan. Ten factors (parameters) were applied to affect overall curriculum satisfaction. These were analyzed to see their correlation with each other and with CGPA. The overall curriculum satisfaction was considered to be the average satisfaction of these ten parameters. The result of the research showed that the ten factors, affecting overall curriculum satisfaction, are strongly positively correlated to each other. The overall curriculum satisfaction has moderate positive correlation with CGPA. The admission criteria, studied separately in two cases, showed that admission by diploma affects college CGPA weakly while admission by EUEE significantly affects CGPAItem An Assessment of Adult Basic Education Among The People of Menja, With Particular Reference to Sheka and Kaffa Zones in SNNPR.(Addis Ababa University, 2010-06) Tilahun, Aster; Zeleke, Befekadu (Associate Professor)The purpose of this study was to assess the current status of Adult Basic Education among the Menja people in their specific localities and identity. A descriptive survey method was used to conduct the study. The necessary data were collected using Primary sources: those were collected by the researcher for the first time and thus happened to be original in character and using Secondary sources: which had already been collected by someone else and passed through statistical process. The Primary data were gathered from 39 facilitators and 18 experts and NGO focal persons through questionnaires and were analyzed quantitatively using frequency count percentages, t-test and mean processing in SPSS version 15, where as the data obtained from 244 respondents through focus group discussion, field observation and interviews were examined qualitatively. The Secondary data from Yeki education bureau, NGO: God for People from yeki woreda finance bureau and from Bechi, Woshero, Ermich kebele schools were obtained. Respondents were selected by availability, purposive and stratified sampling. The result of the study indicated that ABE learners and community members perceived ABE as a place of knowledge how to read, write and compute numeracy and also regarded it as important to their children and themselves too. However, the education bureau of the two zones (Yeki in Sheka zone and Bitta in KejJa zone) accepted the importance of ABE for the community in providing skills, behavioral change etc. they haven't implemented it as expected .For example ABE schedule was run under formal academic calendar with combination of formal school and extension program .On top of this, the study disclosed that distance from ABE centers( though it was the formal one) , economical problems and discrimination of the Menja by non Menjas were found to be the major obstacles of the Menja people to attend the ABE program. Besides, woreda educational offiCials were less attentive in the schoolingfacilities and supervising services of the ABE program. Finally, the study recommended that as there was no ABE concerned NGOs that established the program in KejJa zone particularly around Bitta lVoreda, the woreda has to look for the solutions how the adults could be benefited in ABE programItem An Assessment of the Practice of Community Skill Training Centers Programs Implementation in Selected Woredas of West Arsi Zone of Oromia Region(Addis Ababa University, 2011-06) Elemo, Burash; Oumer, Jeilu (PhD)The main objective of this study was to assess the practice of community skill training centers programs implementation in West Arsi Zone. In the study a descriptive survey research method was employed. 5(55.55%) community skill training centers were selected by simple random sampling method (Lottery method) out of nine (9) community skill training. The data were collected thought questionnaire, semi-structured interview, observation and document analys is. The participants were 42 trainees 10 trainers, 5 coordinators, 7 district and zonal TVET supervisors, and 6 district and zonal heads of TVET offices. To select the respondent group, simple random, availability and purposive sampling techniques were used. Frequencies, percentages, means and standard deviation were used as statistical tools to analyze data. Based on the analysis the major findings of the study reveals that lack of need based training, low training opportunities for practitioners, lack of adequate budget to run the program in adequate training materials as obstacles to implement s kill training program. The study also showed that less awareness of community in receiving training program, less involvement of relevant line ministers in planning, implementation and evaluation of community skill training centers and weak linkage Farmers training centers (FTC) and community s kill training centers as hindrances of community skill training programs implementation. It could be concluded that due to the collective influences of these factors the whole process of the skill training programs implementation could not be effective and efficient. Thus it has been suggested that motivated and competent adult educators, per service and on job training of fa cilitators and a continuous awareness creation are timely essentialItem The Contribution of Parental Education for Girls Academic Achievement The Case of Selected Regions in Ethiopia(Addis Ababa University, 2014-06) Aniley, Siyane; Husen, Abdulaziz (PhD)The purpose of this study was to describe the contribution of parental education for girls academic achievement. For undertaking this study, the relevant data were gathered from various relevant sources, questions were set, dependent and independent variables were defined, tools for data collections were developed and finally the data was analyzed and interpreted. The instruments used for data collection were questioner, FGD, interview and observations. Parents (90), primary school female students (90), teachers (36), principal and community leaders were the sample respondents of the study.The study was carried out in 5 primary schools of Bahirdar Zuria and 4 primary schools of Guto Gida district. The data obtained were analyzed using percentage and also coding, tabulating, graphing of the findings both in quantitative and qualitative manner. The final analysis result indicated that, Parental education contributes in increasing the parents’ involvement in their daughter’s education. Parental education changes and increases the concern of parents for the future of their girl child. Because parents know the benefit of education, parental support for the basic needs and educational material need is increased. Parental education reduces students’ absenteeism. Moreover, parental education increases the emotional attachment/ closeness of parents and children. From the above conclusion the researcher recommended that awareness creation on parental education, making parental education as a crosscutting agenda, link among stakeholders and organizing community dialogues on parental education is vitalItem Cooperative Learning in Adult and Non- Formal Education Centers in Arada Sub City, Addis Ababa City Administration(Addis Ababa University, 2015-06) Tezera, Haymanot; Regassa, Fetene (PhD)This study attempts to investigate the role of cooperative learning in adult and non-formal education in selected centers of Arada sub-city in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. To achieve this objective, a qualitative phenomenological study design was employed. The samples were selected using purposeful sampling methods. The respondents were twenty, fifteen team leaders of the cooperative learning and their five facilitators in five centers of adult and non-formal education center, purposefully selected for this study in Arada Sub-City of Addis Ababa City Administration, Ethiopia. The data was collected through interview and observation based on Johnson and Johnson (1999) elements of cooperative learning, Semi-structured interview guide and observation checklist were designed to gather qualitative data from the participants of the research. The data were analyzed and discussed in thematic description. The findings of the study revealed that study participants perceived that all elements of cooperative learning were used in class room and cooperative learning had benefited their learning. The findings also revealed that challenges that exists in implementing cooperative learning were absent of students and associating it to political agenda of the ruling party. Moreover, based on the findings, further recommendations were drawn along with suggestions for further investigationItem Factors Affecting Adult learners Dropout From Non-Formal basic Education in Addis Ababa(Addis Ababa University, 2010-06) Yitayew, Abebayehu; Dessu (PhD)The main purpose of this study was to identify the major factors affecting adult learners' dropout fro m Non-Formal Basic Education and to suggest constructive ideas that would help to minimize the dropout of adult learners from Non- Formal Basic education . To the end, both quantitative and qualitative methods were employed. Simple random sampling technique was used to select Five out of Ten sub-city education departments, Five Non-Formal Basic Education representatives from SCEDs, thirteen school principals where Non-Formal Basic Education was provided, 32facilitators from the (13) NFBE centers and four school cluster supervisors and 12 adult learners were used as a source of data. The inf01mation gathered from the respondents was analyzed by using such statistical tools like frequency counting, percentage, and Chi-square tests. The results of data analysis showed that there were in-school and out- ojschool related factors for adult learners' dropout from NFBE. In the case of In-school factors for adult learners' dropout were shortage of stationary materials, textbooks, facilitators' inappropriate approach, school distance, etc. Out of school factors were mainly economical problems. Descriptive survey method was used to conduct the study. To this effect, a sample consisted of 17 in-ser·vice summer trainees, 8 instructors and 2 deans (the dean and academic dean of the college) were selected by using availability and purposive sampling techniques respectively. To collect data pertinent to the study; questionnaires and interviews were chosen. Moreover, observations with respect to the availability of human, material, and time resources as well as the SUfficiency of reference books were made. The data obtained through the instruments were analyzed and interpreted using percentages and frequency counts. The findings s howed that the books, reference materials, time, and budget were not sufficient for adult and non-formal education program in the college. These led to the conclusion that the adult and non-fonnal education program of the Amhara Regional State as it is offered in DMCTE, the program and its implementation is insufficient and less related to the day to day programs of the adult, did not consider the economic affairs of the adults and resources particularly, material resources were found to be scarce. Addis Ababa is one of the cities that are developing at an alarming rate with strategies of urban design and development using multifaceted structures and collaborators to achieve the above needs among other things. Hence, the aims of this thesis is to investigate the problems and opportunities of these urban design strategies and finally to show the findings through a method of case studies. It addressed two basic issues on the role of the center, The first one was multi faceted role of education and technical training while the prisoners were in prison. The second important point was the role of education and the training in enabling the prisoners to live in harmony with the society in many aspects. To accomplish this, the study utilized qualitative research design that was implemented by collecting and analyzing qualitative data. Three data collection instruments were used, interview', observation and document analysis, The instruments were used to collect both primary and secondary sources of data,the primary data were collected from the institution under investigation, mainly from the trainees, the trainers, prison administration officials, and the released offenders. The secondary data for this study were the available documents ; like case records, trainees' report card, published prison dairies etc, Accordingly the study investigated series of personal experiences of several individuals while they were in and after they were released from the center. thus it was organized in to narrative analysis and several series of case studies. Respondents for the interview were selected through purposive sampling. Officials, trainees, trainers and released offenders were selected. The released offenders were selected through availability sampling. The purposeful selection of participants was done using different criteria, like experience in the prison at least above two years because they understand the area of training system. the other criteria was that they were participants in the training recently. further criteria in selecting the administrative staff based on experiences and those who had direct relation with the training center were selected as respondents for the study. In the anaysis several factors that pushed individuals' to commit crime and do many illegal activities were identified. Of those factors the most series ones like extreme poverty, low educational background, and the type of occupation they engaged in before imprisonment were identified in order that the rehabilitation process through education and training would be successful. A number of education and raining at least for limited percentage of the prisoners were given. Metal work, wood work, bricklaying, tayloring, weaving, hairdressing, embroidery, accounting and office management were some of the trainings given in the center. Significant number of prisoners gained a lot from the training in many aspects. Economic advantage was the major one; prisoners could help themselves and their families. next to economic , social and psychological advantages were prominent, which enabled the prisoners to be interactive and psychologically free from possible mental disturbance. In fact a number of them also learnt in regular education program in the center from 4th-10th grade. The research attempted to evaluate about the unique features of Ye'abnet Timhiret Bets in light of adult education, the teaching learning methods in traditional church schools, the ancient Ethiopian Orthodox Church (EOC) curriculum and its ways of provision, the livelihood of adults in Ye'abinet Timhirt Bet and finally about the contribution of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church (EOC) to the development of adult education. In this research, qualitative research approach was used. Both primary and secondary data sources were utilized. With regard to primary data source, the key informants are selected purposefully by considering the expertise of the participants on traditional education in general and in Ye'abinet Timhirt Bet in particular. Church fathers, teachers and students were participated. This research employed individual interviews and focus group discussions as primary data gathering tools. It also used secondary data sources. Reports of the institutions and related books, journals, newspapers, and educational policies were utilized as secondary data sources. The data were collected through different techniques were carefully transcribed, translated and analyzed qualitatively and interpretation were made using thematic categorization in open coding system. The findings revealed that Ye'abinet TimhrtBbet played a significant role in the development of adult education. Recommendations were also given to be acknowledged, recognized and supported. KEY WORDS: Adult Education, Ethiopian Orthodox Church and Ye'abinet Timhrt Bet.Item The role of Literacy in Economic Empowerment of Women: The Case of Nekemte Women Micro and Small Business Enterprise (WMSBE) Operators(Addis Ababa University, 2009-06) Alemayehu, Ammayo; Fereia, Tesgen (PhD)The study attempted to examine the role of literacy in economic empowerment taking the case of Women MSBE operators at Nekemte town, particularly with The purposes of identifying Their educational and work background they had had, The existing gap among them because of literacy, and consequently, what benefits they gain or miss and which group of them enjoy better livelihood. Hence, qualitative case study method was used to undertake The study and to understand The condition deeply. Primarily, data were gathered from mainly women MSBE operators, and workers or TITO who were at the same time facilitators of the enterprises through questionnaire and FGD and In-depth interview. The participants were chosen Through stratified random sampling for questionnaire and FGD and purposive sampling based on Their role and responsibility, willing and cooperativeness, self expressiveness and literacy range in which they were. Accordingly, 121 sample women filled t he questionnaire, 30 women participated in three FGDs and four women and four TlTO workers were interviewed. Then, data collected through questionnaire were presented and used where if was needed. and the data gathered Through FGDs and Interviews were presented in narrative forms on the bases of informants perceptions and interpreted of the Situation supported by researcher 's reflective analysis. The finding of The study revealed that those women were unable to perform their enterprises activities efficiently to improve their economic welfare because of lack of life skills, some women MSBE operators were lacking reading, writing and numeracy skills. Therefore, The researcher recommended Functional Adult Literacy program designed for women, at all level: agencies that organize and facilitate should consider the literacy back ground of participants, and regions should undertake timely and appropriate monitoring and evaluation activities 10 strengthen the activities of those women engaged in MSBEs.Item The Status of HIV/AIDS Mainstreaming in Integrated Functional Adult Education: The Case of Ledeta Sub City(Addis Ababa University, 2014-06) Zewdie, Asnakech; Berha, Tsagaye (PhD)The purpose of the study was to assess the status of HIV/AIDS mainstreaming in IFAL program in the case of Lideta sub city. A related literature of theoretical and empirical issues was reviewed. A mixed research method was employed. A relevant data were gathered from IFAL facilitators, Adult center and IFAL coordinators, sub-city adult education experts and IFAL learners through classroom observation, questionnaires, interviews, FGD and document analysis. The data collected through questionnaires were analyzed using frequencies and percentages, and the qualitative data were analyzed in narration. In order to select sample population, random sampling was used to select the sub-city.. The findings of the study indicate that most of the adult facilitators were females (61.9 %) with 6 to 15 years of experience and Diploma holders (33.3%.). The study reveals 71.4% of the HIV/AIDS education included in the integrated adult education was very relevant to adult day to day life. The study showed 61.9% of the time given to HIV/AIDS education was not enough. It also showed lack of proper monitoring and evaluation, lack of adequate time and contents, lack of adequate teaching and learning materials and lack of continuing capacity building for facilitators and other experts. However, there is HIV/AIDS education curriculum in IFAL that has relevance in meeting the local needs. Finally,. The study indicated most common factors that affect the implementation HIV/AIDS mainstreaming in IFAL education were low level of monitoring and evaluation, lack of motivation, inadequate equipment, and lack of skilled manpower and other resources •The regional education bureau needs to strengthen the monitoring and evaluation system which used to see the proper implementation of the HIV/AIDS education integration to IFAL program and how to run it
