Item Aggressive Branch Expansion Versus ATM and POS Machine use (The case of Awash International Bank S.C in Addis Ababa)(Addis Ababa University, 2015-05) Balcha Berhanu; Seid MohammedIn this project, the aggressive branch expansion of Awash International Bank S.C in Addis Ababa vis-à-vis modern banking technologies of ATM/POS was studied to investigate if the aggressive branch expansion of AIB is advantageous. The cause of the aggressive branch expansion is identified to be the introduction of NBE bills which eroded the fund to be used for customer lending. The study used descriptive research design to gather qualitative and quantitative data. Both primary and secondary data were used for the data analysis and for the study findings. The primary data were collected through questionnaires from customers and employee of the bank. The secondary data are collected from published and unpublished documents of AIB and NBE. Questionnaires were distributed to each class of branches to collect data from the bank's customers. One branch was selected from each class of branch using lottery method to collect data from the bank’s customer. Questionnaires were distributed to all department managers and above department positions as well as to relevant division and branch managers. The research found that aggressive branch expansion is not advantageous for AIB. Moderate branch expansion along ATM/POS expansion is better for AIB from profit perspective. The study will help the bank to reconsider its aggressive branch expansion. It will also help the bank to correct problems identified in the ATM/POS usage. The study will also help as an input for further study.Item Assessing ‘Netsa Hasab’ Program of Walta Tv From The Perspective of Professional Journalism Parameters(Addis Ababa University, 2024-04) Seid Mohammed; Elias Worku (PhD)This research was conducted to examine the status of professional journalism in Ethiopia during the reform period (2018–2023) by taking the "Netsa Hasab" show of Walta Media in Focus. Walta TV is among the media businesses that have popular shows that expose wrongdoing. Of those programs, "Netsa Hasab" is the most well-known. In light of these, the researcher examined how professional journalism is practiced in the program. This study is designed to answer the following fundamental research questions: How close to accuracy and truthfulness does Walta TV's "Netsa Hasab" program adhere? How does Walta TV uphold the values of fairness in its shows? Under what circumstances does the "Netsa Hasab" program respect the dignity of its guests? What are the challenges for using concrete evidence in Walta TV's "Netsa Hasab" program? Discriptive qualitative analysis was condacted. The information gathered from in-depth interviews was examined and sample “Netsa Hasab" programs were also selected purposefully and analyzed carefully. According to the study's findings, the “Netsa Hasab” program features higher officials and prominent people who are viewed by society as untouchable; we can say that it is a model program. But "Netsa Hasab" has a lot of problems when it comes to employing concrete evidence. Consequently, truthful, fair, and accurate information is not available to the public. So the program is produced based more on hearsay than on solid proof. This can be seen also in a number of Ethiopian broadcast media. According to this research, the primary problem with the program is that guests aren't treated properly and fairly. In addition to that Ethiopian professional journalism faces major challenges from government intervention, a lack of professionalism among journalists, and incompetent managers.Item Assessment of Conference Tourism Development in Addis Ababa: Current Practices, Challenges and Opportunities(Addis Ababa University, 2023-10) Seid Mohammed; Ephrem Assefa (PhD)The main objective of this research was to assess the current practices, challenges and opportunities of conference tourism development in Addis Ababa. The researcher used descriptive design to answer the objective of the research and used both primary and secondary data. Respondents a r e c o m p o s e d of 150 conference participants (meet them in star rated hotels conference centers or meeting halls. They have done the questionnaire during the coffee break on individuals hotels which are randomly selected, 14 event organizers and conference planners who are working in those hotels, 3 concerned government offices are ECB,AAACTB,AAICEC and one tourism professional which are purposively selected to get reliable and convenient data for the research purpose. Survey data was processed using SPSS version 26 and analyzed via descriptive statistics. The results of the study indicated that conference tourism sector in Ethiopia i s in a very young stage. Though Ethiopia has huge potential in attracting and organizing regional, continental, and global conferences, the sector is still struggling with many challenges. The lack of pre and post (both in the past and current) entertainment activities for conference participants, as a person worked long years in the industry and based on my observation conference centers are not well equipped with facilities, language/communication barriers, lack of cooperation among stakeholders, absence of policy package, lack of well-designed conference infrastructure, absence of one window service for conference participants are major challenges. Access of cheap labor, the presence of various national and international organizations such as the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, African Union, European Union, Inter governmental authority on development, and the city Addis Ababa is also the seat of more than 135 embassies and NGOs, are some opportunities for the development of conference tourism in Addis Ababa. Furthermore, access to the center of the city, safety and security issues are one part of challenges, countries past record/ experience, tolerance of others culture, venue facilities, costs related with conference product and service and quality of product and services are the major challenges or factor which affect the selection of conference center and venue. Therefore, the researcher recommended that the current organizational structure for the MICE sector should be well redesigned in a way that give full mandate, responsibility and authority for conference tourism sector by the government (Ethiopian Culture and Tourism minister). Furthermore, adequate budget should be allocated by the Ministry of Tourism and Convention Bureau to participate on international BID to bring international conferences to Addis Ababa. Moreover, hospitality professionals should be assigned to work with internal revenue administration office at Bole airport terminals as the tourists and conference participants need good treatment with good welcoming hospitality service.Item Assessment of Opportunities and Challenges of Electricity Export (The Case of Ethio - Sudan)(Addis Ababa University, 2015-10) Afework Kbreab; Seid MohammedThis paper focuses on assessment of opportunities and challenges of electricity export - the case of Ethio-Sudan. As its focus is in electricity export to Sudan which is a newly emerging business area to Ethiopia, the study carried out different activities so as to collect primary and secondary data from different sources respectively through interviewing the designated officials of EEP and EEU and focal persons discussion along with working documents like power purchase agreement, Minutes of Understanding(MoU), Minutes of meeting in different times to negotiate and discuss on issues about the export, financial statements EEU for four years since its start is too short to take data beyond four years. Extensive literature survey was undertaken to underpin the opportunities and challenges regarding the export so that they can be synchronized with what is actually being experienced in the case under this study. The research has identified opportunities such as very competitive cost (tariff rate -5 against 13.18 USD cents in east African countries)by which the electricity revenue is to be aggressively increased, abundant resources and excess supply within, unsatisfied demand in neighboring country-Sudan. Moreover, the interconnection increases energy security and reliability, stability, peace and security along with the developing their national economy. On the other hand, the paper has outlined that electricity export is being challenged by unsatisfied domestic demand, inadequate generating capacity and reserve margin due to the huge infrastructural facilities it demands, lack of managerial skill for such activities. Moreover, the intangible social resettlement cost as well as lots of acres of land used for hydropower dam construction remained to be an opportunity cost for the exporting country- Ethiopia and an opportunity to Sudan. Finally, the research forwarded recommendations based on the findings of the study as follows; Since Ethiopia remains to be a net exporter of electricity to Sudan, it is better to insist on developing generating capacity, managerial skills to administer the contract, utilize the foreign and internal source of finances and aggressively engage in the export activity even with other neighbor countries like South Sudan, Kenya, Djibouti, Eritrea, and others so as to create a new capital in hard currency as major additions to GDP. Tyre pyrolysis is a process carried out in the absence of oxygen to recover fuel oil, gases, carbon char and steel from used tyres. The study is based on data gathered from pertinent secondary and primary sources, and certain assumptions. In the study, it is found that about 40,000 tons of scrap tyres are generated annually in Ethiopia currently, out of which about 6,000 tons per year are estimated to be available for pyrolysis project. The envisaged project will have adequate market for its products. A plant with 12 tons per day capacity with technology from China is selected. The best location for the project is in the outskirts of Addis Ababa or Oromia towns around Addis. The total investment cost of the project is estimated at Birr 12.6 million. The financial analysis shows that the project is viable in all measures of profitability analysis: The simple rate of return on total investment at full capacity operation is 52%; the payback period is 3.6 years including the construction period; the net present value (NPV) over the total investment, calculated at 12.5% discount rate, is positive (i.e., Birr 19,447,413); the internal rate of return (IRR) over the total investment is 43%; and annual cash surplus starts in the second year and continues to grow. The result of sensitivity analysis shows that the project is primarily sensitive to fuel oil sales price, and also to scrap tyre acquisition cost on secondary level. The feasibility of the project becomes marginal if the steel has no sales, and the project ceases to be feasible if both carbon black pellet and steel do not have market. This is in conformity with the findings in the literature. The project possesses wide range of benefits such as generation of social surplus and employment, import substitution and contribution to the transfer of technology. In addition, the project greatly contributes to the environmental protection effort by cleaning waste tyres, reducing the health and fire hazards and avoiding release of chemicals that harm the environment by open burning. Hence, the project is worth implementing, and it is recommended that interested parties should prepare a detailed feasibility study and start the project soon to get the first mover advantages.
