Item Drama Evaluatton in Ethiopian- - . Professional Theatres(Addis Ababa University, 2001-01) Wolde, Kassa; Getaneh, Akalu (PhD)To identifY the quality of a ceria ill drallla is usualiy difficult. The maill reason is Ihat quality is not measurable and basically depelldellt on personal taste or experience. Accordingly, when we consider the drama evaluation activity ill Ethiopian professional Theatres, we could observe lots of arguments and cOlllroversies. However, in spite of its contentious nature, there is no significallt study that treats the issue proper/yo Therefore, the principal objective of the study was to describe and examille Ihe lIIain f eatures of the drama evaluation practice in the theatres. Accordingly, the sludy was lIIaillly cOllcerned with identifYing the ways alld approaches used to select scripts for productioll. III this regard, the study allempted to consider the available theoretical concepts, which are thought to be helpful to compare and contrast the drama evaluation trend in Ethiopia with other approaches. Similarly, those related lileratures that nudge the issue of drallla evaillalion activity in Ethiopia are included to indicate and represent the differences and arglllllellis Ihat have been forwarded in relation to this activity. The analysis in chapter Ih ree cOllsisted the results of a survey carried out by the researcher on the main traits of Ihe drallla evaluation practice in the theatres. Thus, primarily it allempted to make some descriptive assesslllent on the development of the drama evaluation activity to give a preliminary insight and backgroulld information. The next section considered the issue of the standards, which were being set to evaluate scripls. The issue of applying a standard is controversial in such a way that one group allests the importance of specified criteria that constitute a standard to dislinguish a good play ji-om the bad ones. On the other hand, there is another group that substantiales the impediment of any standard for innovative works and demands its rejection. Th e study Iried to show the impacts of these contradictDlY ideas on the development of theatre ill Elhiopia. The other two sections discussed the issue of evaluators and analysis of the debates arolllld Ihe drama evaluatioll practice. The intention was 10 recount the main problems concerning Ih e evaluatioll activity. The discussions on the sample case studies were intended to prove Ihe flaws alld outcomes of the evaluation reports. The results of the study indicated that drama evaluation activity in Ethiopiall professional theatres faced a lot of problems. These problems are mainly due to the way the theatres are organized, the applied slandards, and the way evaluation COlllmillees worked. The study also forwarded some suggestions Ihal ill elude the reorganization of the theatres, the establishment of a position of a permallelll professional evaluator with defined duty and accountability, alld the avoidance of applying a cerlain stalldard to evaluale ali types of plays. As the study is believed to be an incipiellt attempt ill Ihis area, the suggestiolls forwarded were intended to initiate new ideas and approaches to Ihe mores of theatres.Item Literature as an Adaptable Source: The Case of Etv(Addis Ababa University, 1999-05) Abune, Belayneh; Getaneh, Akalu (PhD)Nowadays, adaptation or dramatization o f pro se fiction s or poems into the medium of film/ TV is a major screen practice around the world . One of th e advantages of a daptations, apart from recreating fresh experience for those who ha ve read the ori g inal literary works, is a lso to give a chance for those illiterate sections of the society to ex perience the literary works of notabl e writers. Ethi opia seems not to have benefited much from these reciprocal convergence among the arts which is found to be valuabl e for the enrichment of the literary practice in the society. There seems also little awareness among the concerned bodies about la yin g the gro und for such a prac tice to grow. The purpose of the stud y clearly stated in this thesis , therefore, was to examine closely the th eory and practice of screen adaptation and to render a vivid picture of the role it ha s so far pl ayed and may ye t have to play in ETV Amharic drama productions. Keeping in mind the unique nature of each medium, the study specifically looked into (a) how the texts in focus enunciated th eir story w ithin the conventions of th eir ge nres and (b) determines as to the type of adaptation rendered based on the fundam enta l theorie s and approaches to the screenin g. of prose narratives. In order to find the outcome of the television adaptations from prose fi ctions, thestudy first analyzed the two prose natTatives, Agatami and Amist Sidist Sebat based on their from and narrative techniques. During the viewing of the screen adaptation every alterations, deletions, and additions of characters, events, and dialogue were noted. Then, based on the critical analysis of the texts and the detailed observation of the adapted TV drama, a close comparative examination was made. The two directors involved in the process of the production were approached to find their views and opinions as well as their experiences. The result of the study indicate that the two screen adaptations lack, though in varying degrees, clear understanding of their source text as well as proper manipulations of the resources of the screen. The problem partly points to the absence of proper training in the area of literature vis-a-vis screen on the part of the adapters, and partly relates to the disorganized and inefficient working conditions of the ETV, a complaint made by the directors. The study also forwarded some suggestions on the basis of the results of the research. It was proposed that those departments concerned with the teaching of literature and theater arts should design a more appropriate course in literature versus screen adaptation. It was also noted that the recent attempt to open up extra TV channels would also pave the way for more efficient screen adaptations to come.Item The Role of Sabido Entertainment•Education Radio Serial Dramas in the Struggle For the Prevention of Hiv/Aids:(Addis Ababa University, 2004-11) Refera, Tafese; Getaneh, Akalu (PhD)The discussions c ompil ed in this thesis are all about view ing th e tr emendous potential of research based medi a communi cation in art to address social problems and mob ili ze peop le towards certain end. The thesis compnses five chapters. The fi rst chapter presents the philosophical background of the thesis as b eing 'art for soc iety's sake' as opposed to 'alt for art sake.' It also rev iews the hi storical development of using li terary products in addressing soc ial problems The Second chapter is a review of some academic and non-acade mi c research works pr ev iously undeltak en on similar iss ues as well as a review of the th eo reti cal framework of the Sabido Methodology. The latter part of this chapter espec iall y presen ts th e hi stori ca l a cc ount of t he invention oft he method b y t he M exican Pl aywri ght Miguel Sa b ido . The intell ectual basis, the expans ion o f the method and the resu lt s obtained in var iou s countri es as well as the pec uliariti es of the Sabido Method drama productions are indicated here. The third chapter examines the production procedures followed to produce the dr am as in view of the technical procedures ind icated in the review part. It tries to present some of the in vestigati ons ca rri ed out on the pre, while and po st-production processes. This chapter further analyzes the script contents of the dramas. The script content analyses measure to what extent the drama scripts articulate the problems and show the peculiarities of the method from other conventional dramas Both those methods of evaluations are used to examine the effectiveness of the drama production in atiiculating the main messages of the drama. The evaluations are also intended to serve as a model for future research initiatives, too. The summary reports of impact assessments are included in the fourth chapter. Both the quantitative and qualitative research methods are used in the study. The qualitative study is done by organizing Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), In-depth Interviews, and Interview with Key Informants. The quantitative study is carried out by distributing questiolU1aires. All these researches were held to decide the effectiveness of the dramas in bringing behavioral changes against HIV/AIDS. The results are summarized at the end of each assessment. Chapter five summarizes the major points discussed and findings achieved by the research and recommends ways to expand the method in the Ethiopian context. It then forwards suggestions to expand such media based intervention of art into various socioeconomIc Issues.Item Some Selected Poems in English by Ethiopian Poets: a Stylistic Analysis(Addis Ababa University, 2002-08) Amare, Abeba; Getaneh, Akalu (PhD)This study is concerned with a stylistic analysis of some selected English poems of three poets; namely Tsegaye G/Medhen, Solomon Deressa and Eyasu Gorfu. This research focuses on how these poets communicate their ideas through language choices. Therefore, the central purpose of this thesis is to explore the language use of the poets and find out how the language conveys meanings in each given poem and bring out the recurrent themes in each poet's work. The method adopted in this study is a stylistic approach. Thus, noting and examining unique features of the poems and their relationships as central too stylistic approach, the analysis of the poems has been systematically carried out. The other aim of this study is to reveal the effectiveness of the stylistic analysis approach in bringing out meaning of the poems and arriving at valid interpretation of literary texts. This thesis has four chapters. The first chapter is a general introduction of the research work. The second chapter surveys different critical reviews and theses related to this research. The third chapter offers an overview of the concepts in focus i.e. it discusses the concepts of style, stylistics and the basic framework of stylistic analysis, which are the analytical tools in the stylistic analysis of the selected poems. The last chapter, which is chapter four deals with the actual analysis of the selected poems. Thus, in section one the poems of Tsegaye G/Medehen are examined with the framework of stylistic analysis. In the second section Solomon Deressa's poems are analysed through the same method and in the third section the poetry of Eyasu Gorfu are scrutinized. In the final section, which is the conclusion part, the findings of the researcher are briefly presented.
