Item Assessment of Communication Strategy of FAO in Light of Van Ruler’s Strategic Communication Frame Work; Case of Reducing Food Losses through Improved Post Harvest Management in Ethiopia – Phase II(AAU, 2020-06) Sisay, Betelhem; Gebru, Amanuel (PhD)The Purpose of this study is to assess the communication strategy of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) for a specific project running from 2018 to 2022 on Reducing Food Losses through Improved Post Harvest Management project in Ethiopia – Phase In this study, a qualitative research method was employed to interpret data. Qualitative data was obtained through document analysis. The content of a project specific communication strategy was analyzed in light of Van Ruler’s (2019) Strategic Communication Framework and the main communication strategic elements included in the plan were assessed based on Donald D. Smith’s (2002) perspective on Strategic Planning for Public Relations. Purposive sampling methods were also employed to choose the organization and the right communication plan in content. Some of the major findings reveal that, from the eight building blocks; ambition and internal situations appears to be strong while vision, external situation, accountability, resource, stakeholders and approach needs more improvement and revision. Regarding with the communication strategy elements included on the communication strategy, the researcher concluded that it needs revision and more work in order to draw an accurate picture of the strategy which will lead to an effective implementation and positive outcome. Various recommendations have been suggested for each elements by the researcher including a thorough revision to better improve the strategic communication.Item Factors Affecting Job Satisfaction of Journalists from Private and Government Media Institutions: The Case of Six Selected Media Institutions(Addis Ababa University, 2014-07) Mustefa, Mesued; Gebru, Amanuel (PhD)This study attempted to examine the factors that affect job satisfaction of journalists from Private and Government Media Institutions. It also investigated the overall job satisfaction of journalists. To address this, a total of 100 journalists were considered using convenient sampling techniques. Out of the 91 respondents, 45 from government and 46 ji-om private media institutions filled in self administered questionnaire in English adopted by the researcher from Spector (J 997) Job satisfaction Survey, an instrument to assess an employee's attitude toward variables such as pay, promotion, supervision, operating procedures, nature of work ,fringe benefits, rewards and communication. The journalists Demographic Survey were designed by the researcher to collect demographic data from the population. Besides, to substantiate and find out the factors that contribute to journalists turnover qualitative data were employed. The data obtained were analyzed by using descriptive statistical techniques of ji-equencies, mean and standard deviation. The finding of the study reveals that there were multiple factors that affect journalist's job satisfaction. Among the nine sub scales of Job satisfaction survey, pay, rewards, benefits, supervision, and promotion were recorded low mean score. Journalists were also ambivalent with their communication and relation with coworkers. The finding further reveals that respondents from private and government media institutions expressed satisfaction by their nature of work. More over this research indicates that majority of the respondents have an intention to leave their current job. On different notion majority of the respondents were not ready to change their profession yet. Results obtained through overall job satisfaction question indicated that most of the respondents are dissatisfied by their work situation. Likewise the interview result displayed multiple factors that contribute to journalist 's job satisfaction and turnover. Based on findings of the study all stake holders, recommended to critically examine the existing problems and tray to elevate the problems so as to make journalists enjoy their work and contribute for the development of the country.Item Gender Representation in Efl Distance Education Materials: Alpha University College's Year I English Modules in Focus(Addis Ababa University, 2006-06) Habtamu, Mesfin; Gebru, Amanuel (PhD)The aim of this study is to investigate if the distance education modules of Alpha University.. College reveal any imbalance concerning gender representation . An attempt is also made to identify the possible causes of gender bias in the content of the modules. Besides, efforts are made to check the accessibility of gender fair a lternatives . Thc study employed the following research tools to achieve its objectives. First, content analysis of the distance education modules is made to investigate features of gender bias. Second, the subjects who produced and edited the modules are interviewed. In doing so, the study compiled further information and crosschecked the data ge n erated through content analysis. The summary of the data obtained through the above research tools indicates that th e r e is a significant differenc e between male and female sex representation in both modules (i.e . intermediale wriLing skills and reading skills) . It is also discovered that the module producer and editor have the awareness of gender-fair linguistic features. But, they seem to be negligent to convert existing wrong practices. On top of these, it is a ls o observed that the sensitivity of the module producer and editor is not accompanied by appropriate practice.Item Organizational Communication Satisfaction: The Case of Awash Insurance Company S.c. Samson Belina(Addis Ababa University, 2016-02) Belina, Samson; Gebru, Amanuel (PhD)The purpose of this research study was to explore the topic of organizational communication in Awash Insurance Company and examine staff members' perceptions about their level of communication and job satisfaction in their workplaces. This study was also designed to test the relationship between communication sati sfaction and job satisfaction by analyzing the significance of different dimensions of communication satisfaction with the view that satisfa ction is multi-faceted. A total of 60 staff members from different departments of the company part icipated in this study. This study included both manager and non-manager employees of the company. A modified version of Communication Sati sfaction Questionnaire (CSQ) developed by Downs and Hazen was used to co llect data. The study used a Likert-type scale with a 7-point scale and had eight dimensions (personal feedback, supervIsory, horizontal and infol1nal communication, organizational integration, corporate infonnation, communication climate, med ia quality, and job satisfaction). The statistical analyses of the data from eight research qu estions revealed some significant relationships and differences. The results found that staff members perceived their level of satisfaction with communication sati sfaction dimensions, supervisory, subordinate and corporate information from somewhat sati sfied to satisfied, and communication climate and personal feedback as indifferent. The results found significant differences among different dimensions of CSQ, indicating that communication sati sfaction is multi-faceted. The staff members perceived their level of job sati sfaction to be somewhat satisfied . The results indicated that gender, marital status and number of years in service do not seem to make a signifi cant difference among staff members' level of sati sfaction. There were strong positive relations found among all dimensions of CSQ. A strong positive relationship and stati stically significant cOlTelation was found between overall communication sati sfaction and job satisfaction scores, indicating that when staff members feel satisfied wi th communication in their workplace, they also tend to feel satisfied with their job in their workpl ace.
