In today’s competitive environment delivering high quality service is the key for a sustainable competitive advantage. The purpose of this study is to assess the service quality and customer satisfaction of Oromia International Bank by using a descriptive research type that used quantitative research method. The target population of the study was customers of OIB in Addis Ababa region where 385 samples were selected for the study. A survey has been used to collect primary data and 302 questionnaires were used in final analysis. Validity and reliability testing were employed to identify service quality attributes. Study results show that service quality is at the root of customer satisfaction. The findings of the study revealed that the overall mean score of perception is higher than expectation in tangibility and assurance dimensions, yielding a positive SERVQUAL gap, reliability and assurance were resulted in a negative and the responsiveness has a zero gap. The attributes perceived satisfactory performed are scattered between the five service quality dimensions. The most affirmatively perceived service quality dimensions are assurance and responsiveness followed by reliability. However, empathy and tangibility are less perceived compared to the other dimensions. Responsiveness shows the highest positive correlation with overall customer satisfaction and tangibility demonstrates the second highest positive correlation with overall with customer satisfaction. The result of this study provides evidence that the SERVQUAL dimensions are a useful tool to predict overall customer satisfaction for OIB. Further analyses on the assessment of service quality and overall customer satisfaction OIB is a topic to be researched. Continuous application of the assessment will allow a comparison between the results and further diagnostics of the service quality.Item The Effects of Outsourcing Logistics Activities of Ethiopian Airlines on its Logistics Performance(Addis Ababa University, 2016-06) Assefa, Melkam; Abebe, Ayele (PhD)The impracticality of excelling at every task force companies to outsource some of their activities especially logistics activities mostly considered as support activities by many companies. The purpose of this study is to learn the rationale of Ethiopian Airlines behind outsourcing of its logistics activities and study the impact of outsourcing Logistics activities of Ethiopian airlines on logistics performance. The study is carried out using descriptive survey method. The researcher included 42 respondents using census. Data was gathered from the respondents by using questionnaires and interview, respectively. Frequency, percentage and mean were used to analyze data collected through questionnaire while the data obtained through interview was analyzed qualitatively. The study discovered that the main reasons of Ethiopian Airlines for outsourcing its logistics activities is need to access outside expertise, efficient utilization of company’s asset and saving in capital investment. Further, the result indicated that Ethiopian Airlines benefited in the form of access to outside expertise, saving in capital investment and efficient utilization of company’s asset. The study revealed that the main challenge faced by Ethiopian Airlines is inefficient management of outsourced freight forwarding activities. The major performance metrics Ethiopian uses to value the freight forwarding service providers is based on time delivery of their shipments, responsiveness and flexibility to the needs of Ethiopian by the service providers and overall quality respectively. Finally, it is recommended that, in collaboration with the Ethiopian Customs and Revenue authority Ethiopian Airlines should avail customs clearance training to its employees so that they could be licensed as it will help them control and support the TPL providers and it is also one step forward for their long run plan of performing freight forwarding and customs clearance activities in house. Building up its employees’ ability to enable them to monitor outside service providers and strict application of performance metrics on the freight forwarding service providers are the other recommendations forwarded. According to the publication by Embassy of Ethiopia to USA Economy and Business Section, (2008) wide variety of mineral resources are available in Ethiopia. 19 local companies and 11 foreign companies have been granted prospecting, exploration and mining licenses. These are for gold and base metals, platinum, industrial and construction minerals, notably, potash, diatomite and high-quality ceramics raw materials. The logistics challenges of mining companies are unique and complex. Despite this, investments in logistics people, processes and systems often take a back seat to core investments around finding, extracting and processing minerals. Logistics costs as a percent of a mining company’s total operating costs may be small, but mining companies can uncover literally millions of dollars in hidden profits by reexamining how they address logistics challenges. Third party logistics providers (3PLs) who specialize in mining specific services can provide targeted solutions that reduce operating costs and improve service levels, while freeing mining companies’ team to focus on strategic initiatives. The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the 3PL service providers’ roles within Ethiopian mining industry supply chain by identifying how the expected roles are performed. The researcher observed that not much has been done on the role of 3PL service providers in the mining industry and in terms of academic contribution, this study aimed to fill a gap in the literature by producing an up-to-date knowledge. On the other hand, on a managerial or practical level, this study adds knowledge about the strategic benefit of logistics outsourcing for the mining companies. In this thesis, an inductive research approach is used and qualitative study has been carried out by applying multiple case studies as a research strategy. The empirical material is gathered from three 3PL service providers: Ardan Risk & Support Services Ltd, Quadrant Investment Group PLC, and Kal Logistic & Trading. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews with open-ended questions conducted at the three target companies and as the research is explanatory in nature, the findings have been analyzed using explanation building technique. The main conclusions from analyzing the role of 3PL service providers showed that 3PL service providers are able to perform their roles through an end to end solution provided to the mining companies from the provision of remote workforce accommodation and facilities management to logistics support including labour supply and waste management. The study also showed the challenges of 3PL companies in providing the service including the current business environment of the country, lack of adequate infrastructure, low level of performance from suppliers, security risks of cargos and lack of skilled manpower. Finally, the study showed the opportunities for new companies to join the market created due to lack of service providers in the industry Key words: Third party logistics, Mining logistics, end to end solution, outsourcing, 3PLchallenge.
