Item VARIOUS SURGICAL PROCEDURES PERFORMED ON DIFFERENT SPECIES OF ANIMALS: OUTCOMES AND COMPLICATIONS(2019-06) Aklilu, Dessalegn; Dr. Yonas Tolosa , Dr. Abebe FromsaSurgery is a knowledge, skill and equipment based specialty that mainly employ an incision in order to provide an advanced veterinary care and to improve animals‘ quality of life as well as increase their life expectancy. In Ethiopia, there is lack of trained personnel, equipments and anesthesia which could potentially be the cause of complications of different surgical cases. There are also no adequate studies conducted to overcome this problem. So this study was conducted with the objectives to gain skill and identify, manage and document complications that could occur during and after surgical procedures in different species. The study was done from September 2018 to June 2019 at Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH) of College of Veterinary Medicine and Agriculture (CVMA) of Addis Ababa University (AAU) which is based in Bishoftu town and some cases were performed in the field by the owners‘ request. During this period, a total of twenty five cases were studied and observations compiled. Almost all domestic animal species and some wild animals such as Marabou Stork and Oryctolagus cuniculus were included in this study. The surgical procedures which were performed and compiled are cesarean section, spaying, prolapse (uterine, vaginal and rectal) management, castration, herniorhaphy, amputation of limb, wing and udder, removal of supernumerary teat and abnormal mass, rasping of sharp molar and abscess draining. During the study in twenty four of the cases a full recovery has been registered whereas one death encountered.Generally, swelling, hypothermia, bleeding, anorexia and loss of body condition were often seen in some of the patients and recorded as a post-operative complication. Use of appropriate aseptic and surgical techniques and also applying good post-operative care can be suggestive in order to minimize post-operative complications.
