Item The Compatiblity Between Democratic Developmental State and Federal System in Ethiipia: Lessons for Africa(Addis Ababa University, 2019-06) Gebreselasse, Yemane; Abebe, Dr. DechasaDemocratic Developmental State model intends to promote economic growth and democracy at the same time. It is a recent phenomenon which is being applied in a few states. Ethiopia, Botswana and South Africa are among the few states which are adopting this new model. Since 2000’s the ruling party EPRDF declared the Democratic Developmental State is the only and the one model which can lift the nation out of poverty and builds democracy. The party states that this due to the fact that democratic developmental state is the better alternative for developing countries. The party and the government spoke boldly that the undemocratic way of Developmental states can’t work for the diversified Ethiopia. So it should include democracy too. For administrative structure, Ethiopia is also a federal state. The compatibility of Developmental and Democracy is addressed by many authors. But the issue of Democratic Developmental State and Federalism way of administrative is well not discussed. So this paper analyzed the compatibility between Democratic Developmental State and Federal system. The method of the study is using a qualitative research method. Ethiopia has some very impressive achievements and some drawbacks. The country has been registered rapid economic growth after it has adopted the new model. However Lack of elite commitment, effective bureaucracy and lack of strong institutions in particular and weak democratization in general hinders the journey of building Democratic Developmental State and Federal system in Ethiopia. Therefore it is vital to assess the experiences in this case. Other African states can also take lesson from the draw back and also from the achievement. Key terms: Developmental state, Democratic Developmental State, Federalism, elite commitment, National ConsensusItem Economic Inclusion of Refugees In Ethiopia: opportunities And Challenges(Addis Ababa University, 2019-06) Zelalem, Kaleab; Abebe, Dr. DechasaNotwithstanding the economic advancement in recent years, Ethiopia still remains to be challenged by the need to create economic opportunities. Regardless of the internal economic difficulties, however, the government of Ethiopia made specific pledges to the international community concerning refugee economic inclusion. This study aimed at analysing Ethiopia‘s refugee economic inclusion agenda with the view of identifying its prospects and challenges. The study, with the objective of assessing the implications of implementing refugee economic inclusion in Ethiopia, asks what the prospects of economic inclusion of refugees are in terms of national economic development and the possible challenges that may impede its implementation. To achieve the research objective, the methodology that better enabled the writer answer the research questions and achieve the desired goal was a qualitative research approach with an exploratory research design. Key informant interviews were the major primary data collection method utilized. Accordingly, the major findings of the research ascertained that additional support from the international community is geared towards a shift to a development oriented response however, the findings also highlighted the sensitivities around economically including refugees and need to guarantee the sustainable support the international community. The research established that refugee economic inclusion has various prospects in terms of obtaining additional development oriented support for Ethiopia as a refugee hosting nation. Nevertheless, the implementation and the policy changes that are in the pipeline should take into consideration managing sensitivities in refugee – host community relations, approaches that translate into better economic opportunities and negotiations for sustained support from the international communityItem The Potential Security Significance of The 2018 Renewed Diplomatic Relation of The Horn Of African Countries on The Region(Addis Ababa University, 2019-09) Merga, Dereje; Abebe, Dr. DechasaThe study focuses on the potential security significance of 2018 renewed diplomatic relations between Horn of African countries on the region. Horn Africa was characterized by a very serious security problems which was affected the regional security for the long period of time. specially in the past two decades, horn of African countries experienced different security problems like boundary conflict, sponsoring gorilla against each other‟s, weak diplomatic relations, Nationalism, Religion, ethnicity, and interventions against internal affairs of each others are commonly factors that affecting the regional security of horn Africa regions based on this fact the 2018 has been a momentous year for horn of African countries in particularly, Ethiopia, Eretria, Somalia, and Djibouti while they renewed their relations which has a potential significance on the security of horn African region .Thus, the contention of this thesis is that, the potential security significance of horn African countries renewed diplomatic relation in 2018 on the horn African region. Through data analysis of primary and secondary sources the paper will provide the rationale of the thesis. Keywords: diplomacy, regional security
