Item Practices and Problems of Decision Making in Preparatory Schools of South West Showa Zone(Addis Ababa University, 2018-06) Adugna, Genene; Oumer, Jeilu (PhD)The main purpose of this study was to assess the practices and problems of decision making in selected preparatory schools of South West Showa Zone. Descriptive survey method was employed. This is because of the fact that descriptive survey method enables the researcher to obtain pertinent information in line to the recent the practices and problems of decision making in selected preparatory schools of South West Zone. Five woredas were selected for the study using simple random sampling technique. The sample covered five preparatory schools. A total of 165 respondents (10 principals, 70 teachers, 40 department heads, 5 Parent Teachers Association heads, 5 school supervisors and 35 students’ council members) were included in the study. Out of 140 Teacher, 70 Teachers respondents were selected by simple random sampling technique and the others were by availability sampling technique. The instruments used to collect data were questionnaire, interview, focus group discussion, document observation and document review. The collected data were interpreting both quantitatively and qualitatively. Besides, the statistical tools used to analyze the data were frequencies and percentages. The findings of the research showed that the school leaders followed fewer steps to make and have low knowledge on how to make decisions; the decisions were smooth to meet the objectives and goals of the school. Most of the school principals were not qualified and didn’t take the training which enables them to take participatory decision. The principals didn’t encourage and involve stakeholders in decision making. Due to the above reasons, the practices of decision making was poor and had many problems in the preparatory schools of South West Showa Zone. Based on the findings, the following recommendations were forwarded. Thus, it is advised to give awareness and encourage the stakeholders to increase their participation in decision making. Professionally, qualified leaders have to be assigned and given on job training by the concerned body. The school leaders should make the school secular and minimize the interferences of external bodies from school decision making. In addition to this, they have to take time and think over the consequences of the decisions before implementing the decision, follow decision steps and check whether the formulated decision meet the objectives and goals of the school.
