Abstract
In developing countries the demand for reliable and
adequate information in general and populat ion
informatio n in particular has increased more than ever
for purposes of development planning, and for formulat ing
and monit oring population pol icie s and programmes.
Ethiopia is no exception.
From the surveys and interviews carried out for thi s
study, it beca me evident that establishment of a national
populat ion information support system that can collect .
organize and proces s s uch i n formation to meet users
requirements had become crucial to development planning
in the country.
An attempt has been made to assess users of population
information (their information needs. the sources th e \"
used . their information seeki ng be ha viour . etc . ) and the
existing support facilities. Interviews. onsite study .
reviewing of relevant documents and questionnaire s urve y
were the method s employed for the purpose of data and
fact collect ion.
The results of the survey generally indicated that u s er s
have problems in timely access to reliable. and adequat epopulation information, and the support facilitie s are
deficie nt in meeting th e ir requirements.
