The purpose of this study was to examine the models, which might be appropriate to represent the attrition rate of students at the Faculty of Business and Economics (FBE), Addis Ababa University (AAU). In addition, the study attempted to estimate the magnitude and pattern of academic survival rates of students and compares the survival rates of male and female students. The attrition data from the batch of 1994/95 to 1998/99 were used in the study. The data sources were the Records Office of FBE and the Office of the Registrar of AAU. The findings of the study revealed that among the four models examined, two of the Guttman and Olkin model (1989) and the reparametrized model (Temesgen,1991) were found to be adequate to represent the attrition rate of students at FBE. The findings also showed that about 67% of the students of Batch I was able to complete five semesters while this figure increased to 88% for Batch V. Here it should be noted that the academic survival rates of students increased from batch to batch. It was also found that even though the survival rates of female students was lower than male students for the five batches, still there was no observed statistical difference between the academic survival rates of male and female studentsen_US
