dc.description.abstractNow days , to uris m development is beco ming a priority area of the general development endeavors in Go ndar city. Th is study aimed at looking into the challenges and opportunities of to urism development in Go ndar city and pointing out its futu re perspectives . Primary and secondary qualitative and quantitative data sourced from purposively, conveniently, and through snowball selected different concerned individuals and agenCies through semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions , survey, observation, and document analysis were gathered to achieve the stated objectives. Frequency and percentage presented by using tables and charts were used to analysis quantitative data whereas qualitative data were narrat ed to triangulate and substantiate the findings. The study revealed that tourism development has been practiced in the areas of tourism product development; micro-and small scale tourism business enterprises; human resources development; conservation and protectiun of heritages; and marketing and promotional a ctivities. Tourism dev elopment was also being challenged by the limited participation of residents; the destructions of both tangible and intangible heritages; concentration of benefits to few individuals; high leakages of tourism revenue; absence and misplacements of human power in both the private and public sectors; absence of quality and standardized tourism products and services; confiicts of interests and ownerships and absence of cooperation and partnerships among stakeholders; negative altitude of residents towards carnival festival; consumerism b_ehaviors of visitors; and absence of legal and institutional frameworks. However, the diverse plenty of attractions in and around th e city; strategic location of the city; hosp itality and positive attitudes of re sidents towards visitors; prevailing peace and security; and high attention by the government and development agencies for tourism development were the opportunities identified for theĀ· successjiil and sustainable tourism development in GondaI' city. Hence, possible ways and strategies to mitigate th e challenges and maximize and utilize th e opportunities to enhance the conh'ibution of tourism development are explored and recommended in this study.
