Abstract
The purpose of this paper was to assess the practices and challenges of solid waste management in SNNPR Kembate Tambaro Zone Durame Town; accordingly, descriptive survey research method was used. Questionnaire, Field observation and interview were the instrument employed to collect valid data. Data was gathered from 249 selected sampled households using open ended and close ended questionnaire, and from purposely selected key informants using semi structured interview.
The result of data analysis showed that food waste and their packages were the major type of solid waste in Durame Town. Poor awareness of the community, Lack of solid waste materials are the challenges of Solid waste management in Durame town.
Finally, The conclusion of the study indicated the weak financial status of the municipality to provide solid waste materials along with low awareness of the community were the series problem that challenges the practice of solid waste management system in Durame town.
In sum the municipality should involve the private sector to fulfill the required conditions for the waste management in the town and also it should assign the health officer of the town to engage in awareness creation campaign to enable the people aware of the importance of safe solid waste disposal for their environment and health
