Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate students, teachers, and parents' attitudes towards
Gamotslso as medium of instruction (Mal) in thefirst cycle of primary education. To carry out
this research, 220 subjects were selected Fom three rural and two urban centers, of Arbaminch
town, Arbaminch zuria woreda, and Che ncha woreda. Besides language skill assessment ,
respondents were given with attitude questionnaire to measure their feelings towa rds Gamotstso
instruction. Descriptive research method was employed to investigate the data . One way ANa VA
and one sample t- test is used to analyzed the data obtained Fom the questionnaire using SPSS
in addition to simple statistical operation such as mean , percentile etc. The result shows that
s tudents, teachers and parents in general hold positive attitudes towards Gall1 otstso serving as
the medium of instruction. The termination of the target language in the jirst cycle is a major
cause for the Fustration of some respondents to feel that learning in the local language is
useless. No statistically significant attitudinal variation is observed among student, teachers, and
parents regarding the use of Gamotstso as Mal Urbani Rural settlement of the respondents
does not result in a s ignificant differ ence in their altitudes towards Gamotstso as medium of
instruction. On the basis of these findings , it was suggested that curriculum des igne rs or policy
makers, and stake holders need to consider expanding th e role of the local language beyond the
first cycle. Allegation should also be paid to re-examine the variation of Gamotstso as it poses
some problems in the implementation of mother tongue education in Garno Goja zone.
