This study investigates production of glucose (fermentable sugar) from water hyacinth pretreated with 1.5% H2O2 and 3%NaOH. Cellulose-hemicellulose and lignin content of water hyacinth were determined using thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA) and found to be 42.1% and 11.46% before pretreatment and its crystallinity was measured by X- ray diffraction (XRD) which was 31.29%.The pretreated sample (54.11% cellulose-hemicellulose and 7.04% lignin with 53.68% crystallinity) was hydrolyzed in an autoclave using diluted sulfuric acid (0.5% -1.5%), at a temperature between 100 – 130 C for a hydrolysis time between 45 – 75 min. The Highest glucose yield (indicating efficient hydrolysis of cellulose) was found to be 0.451 mg/ml at an acid concentration of 0.5%, temperature of 130 o C and hydrolysis time of 75 min. In spite of its detrimental effect on environment and society, it is also possible to produce valuable products from the weed. However, further researches should be done on utilization of water hyacinth in small and large scale.en_US
