Abstract

This thesis was aimed at conducting a research study entitled "A Comparative Study of the Implementation of Apprenticeship Training Program (ATP) of Regular and Extension programs of St. Mary's University College (SMUC) ". The main purpose of the study was to investigate the similarities and differences in regular and extension programs in terms of inputs and processes on the implementation of apprenticeship training program. In light of this, an attempt was made to look into the basic questions that are related to managerial effectiveness, manpower profile, financial resources, physical facilities, curriculum and guidelines as well as evaluation and certification were the focus of the study. Methodologically, a comparative method was employed to compare the similarities and differences between regular and extension programs of a private TVET institution named SMUC Availability, random, purposive stratified random sampling and systematic sampling techniques were used in identification and selection of subjects of the study. The subjects of the study were 284 trainees, 100 supervisors\trainers of the work place, 3 coordinators and 2 principals of the SMUC The data drawn were collected by means of questionnaire, interview, and observation check list and then transcribed for analysis. Method of analysis were employed by using the following statistical tools, such as percentage, chi-square, t-test and ANOVA. • The findings of the study revealed that the apprenticeship training were not supported by legal framework similarly for both regular and extension programs, assignment of trainees and selection of organizations were undertaken in haphazard manner for there were no preset criteria for both regular and extension programs. As a result of t-test there was significant difference between the two groups. To this effect, the adequacy of work shop facilities in extension program was better than regular program in the work place. The result of ANOVA also indicates that there were significant differences between regular and extension programs. Thus, the mean result of apprenticeship training was better in regular program than extension program. On the top of this, in school and work place follow-up activities were better in regular program than extension program. Hence, it was concluded that there were similarities and differences between regular and extension programs. Therefore, it is recommended that the employers and SMUC should be committed to share their responsibilities for effective implementation of ATP .
