dc.description.abstractThe prevalence of stress and burnout is high among health workers in general and HIVIAIDS counselors in particular. The overall objective of the research was to assess the occupational stress and coping mechanisms of Wegen AIDS Talkline Counselors. The research employed both quantitative and qualitative research methads with survey questionnaire and indepth interview. Quantitative data was analyzed using SPSS (descriptive statistics such as percentages andjigures). For the qualitative information, thematic analysis was undertaken by looking into themes and consistencies in sentences and phrases to put related ideas together. Work place environment, prank/abuse calls and call intervals were outlined to be major contributing factors of occupational stress. Employees encountered cognitive, physical, emotional and behavioral challenges and consequences as a result of work-related stress. Based on the jindings, conclusions and recommendations were forwarded to HIVIAJDS counselors, organizations engaged in similar activities and the government to enhance and assure the wellbeing of counselors and sustainability of tollji'ee counseling.en_US
