A study on the extent and hygienic appropriateness of injection therapy was conducted in 1380 households and four governmental health institutions in Bahir Dar Woreda, north western Ethiopia. Systematically selected 1380 households both from the urban and rural settings and four governmental health care facilities were used as a sample to get data on injection practLce frollL-the communLty and heal th care providers. The household survey revealed a two weeks overall prevalence of injection therapy to be 13%. The rates were comparable in the rural and urban settings. A statistically significant (p<0.05) higher injection treatment rate was observed among children under five. Disposable syringe and needle use was more common among the urban injection receivers. A review of patient records revealed that 26% of the patients have received injection treatment during their visit to health institutions. Out of the four governmental health facilities observed the sterilization practice in two of them was inadequate and the safety measures during inj ection administration in three of them was found to be inappropriate. Refreshment course to injection providers and improvement in the supply of the necessary injection and sterilization equipment are recommended.en_US
