Abstract

Yelmana Densa is one of the districts of West Gojjam Administrative Zone of Amhara National Regional State. The existing literature reveals that in the past the territOlY of Yelmana Densa was an important center of economy, administration and religious activilies in Gojjam at least Fom the beginning a/the 17" cenlwy. In the early 20'), centUl)" the importance ofYelmana Densa increased than ever before. During the Italian occupation period (1936-41), Yelmana Densa was one of the most renowned centers of patriotic resistance in Gojjam. Despite the strong resistance there, the italians successively made Yelmana Densa a center of Vice Rezidenza (1936-37), Rezidenza (1937-38) and Commissionership (1939-41). The post liberation period also saw increasing changes in the traditional form of administration, taxation and urbanization in Yelmana Densa despite the resistance by the local population. However, socially, the centuries old forms of social relation, in which particularly occupational groups were marginalized, still continued throughout the period under study. Therefore, this thesis has been reconstructed all the histOlY of Yelmana Densa district during the period from 1901 to 1974. It will also lIy to fill some gaps in the existing literature and shade light on the root causes of the current social, economic and administrative problems of the district
