Abstract
Return migration has different dimensions worth considering. Despite the fact that this
issue is an important factor having an impaC! on the countlY's socia-economic growth,
not much is known on Ihe dynamics of the phenomenon. Lack of research and
information regarding return migration is an important reason for the less emphasis
given to the issue. This study is therefore concerned with an assessment of return
migration of Ethiopian migrants, in particular those who have migrated to Ihe weslern
countries.
Accordingly, as per the study, most went abroad mainly to improve their living standards
through education and to support their families back home, and due to the insecurity they
had regarding political stability. On the other hand, aspirations to live and work back in
Ethiopia and fa mily ties were the main reasons for many to actuaily return home.
Regarding re-illlegration, mosl have managed to re-integrate well back in Iheir home
countlY both in the working system and in the community with some exceptions. The
problem may be attributed to change in structural value of the return migrants and the
resistant naillre of Ihe community itself. /n addition, as they have accumulated savings
from working abroad, most have been able to transfer jinancial capital and also human
capital as most of them have acquired skills and experience through the tertiwy trainings
Iheyobtained. Finally, as the government 's illltiaLive including incentives and privileges
is appreciated, slill support is required.
By and large, this study attempted to jiilthe information gap due to lack of research by
generating information usejiil to identifY important policy concerns.
