Evaluation of the Effect of Ascaridia Galli on the Newcastle Disease Vaccine Efficacy and the Immunostimulatory Effects of Honey in Chickens

Abstract
Vaccine efficacy to stimulate desired humoral and cell mediated immune response can be negatively and positively affected by concurrent helminth infection and uses of immunostimulatory feed additives respectively. This study aimed to assess the impact of Ascaridia galli infection and use of honey on vaccine-induced immunity to Newcastle disease. A randomized control trial experimental design was implemented. A total of 100 specific pathogen-free brooded chickens divided into nine experimental groups, where three groups (group 1, 3 and 7) experimentally infected with Ascaridia galli, three groups were fed with honey (5,6 and 8), two groups (2 and 4) were vaccinated, non-infected and honey was not fed and one group(group-6) was control. Humoral immunity and cell mediated (Lymphocyte proliferation assay) immune response were evaluated after taking blood samples at 7 days interval.113 and 104.6 mean antibody titers were obtained in Hitchner B1/LaSota vaccinated and with parasite infected respectively and there were significance difference (P<0.05) relative to control group. While 112.8 and 91 average antibody titer was obtained in thermostable-I2 vaccinated only and vaccinated with parasite groups respectively. The results were significantly increased (P<0.05) compared to the non-significant control group (P>0.05). The cell absorbance (average optical density) and the stimulation index of the vaccinated groups also high and significant. Higher mean antibody titer, cell absorbance, stimulation index also obtained in vaccinated and honey fed groups relative to the control group. Ascaridia galli had an effect on the humoral and cell mediated immune responses of the Newcastle disease vaccines. However, more study will acertain if vaccine-induced protective immunity will be impaired by Ascaridia galli-infection and whether or not honey feeding will help to stimulate the immunity. A more detailed study is therefore required on the quantitative assessment of honey for antibody response in chicks.
