| dc.description.abstract | Anemia is regarded as a major risk factor during pregnancy both for the mother and the fetus. Its severity depends upon the status of the mother in the society. A health center based cross-sectional study was conducted in East Gojjam Basoliben woreda at five health centers from February 4/2018 to June 27/2018.Data were collected using blood sample and structured pretested questionnaire, which contained socio-economic, demographic and clinical characteristics of pregnant women. The Hb level was calculated from packed cell volume (PCV) using hematocrit method of Hb determination. Data were entered and statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 16, software. Association between variables was done using chi square, and statistical significance was considered at P value <0.05. The data showed that the prevalence of anemia was 60.2%, based on the WHO criterion for the diagnosis of anemia in pregnancy, i.e. hemoglobin<11.0 g/dl (PCV<33. Very high prevalence of anemia was shown among pregnant women those walked on bare foot (90.5%) (P=0.00).So among statistically significant variables, walk on bare foot was a major contributing factor for anemia in the study area.
