Abstract
Site selection of an airport needs a careful attention. Thus, factors like obstacles,
accessibility for ground transport to and from the city, favorable topographic and climatic
conditions and others are considered in the task of site selection for an airport so as to
secure safety of the society and the aviation industry.
Addis Ababa bole international airport/HAAB serves as a hub of different
operators and more than 180 flights per day departed from and arrived to the aerodrome.
The issue of land use planning and compatibility concerns are not given due attention at
HAAB this moment. Thus, one can see different land use types and developments that are
not compatible with the airport environment. Crusher plants, residential, agricultural
lands and wildlife attractant sites are common surrounding HAAB that needs careful
attention from the concerned
Using qualitative and quantitative research methods the researcher has tried to
collect primary and secondary data so as to examine and make analysis on the land use
compatibility concerns from safety of the society and safe operation of the airport
dimensions. After the analysis of the data, the researcher found that the land use types in the vicinity of the airport are incompatible with the airport environment. The data
gathered by different means are presented by means of tables and maps.
The trend of land use developments surrounding HAAB can be said that it is not
in accordance with the standards set by the ICAO and Federal EPA
