Abstract
The general objective of this study was to assess the solid waste management
practices in Addis Ababa, specifically in three selected condominium housing
sites in Yeka sub city. The study tried to identify the main causes for the
ineffectiveness of solid waste management. The study used mixed-method
approach. For a quantitative method a structured close ended questionnaire was
used and for the qualitative method, key informant in-depth interviews and field
observation were conducted to collect the data for this study. A multi staged
sampling was used to select the sample households from the three selected
condominium sites for the study. From the ten sub cities in Addis Ababa Yeka
sub city was purposely selected then Yeka Abado, Yeka Ayat 1 and Yeka Ayat 2
condominium housing sites were again purposely selected. After that 80, 60 and
60 households were randomly selected from Yeka Abado, Yeka Ayat 1 and Yeka
Ayat 2 condominium housing sites respectively. Simple random sampling was
used to select 4 solid waste management experts and 6 solid waste collection
workers for the key informant in-depth interview. Addis Ababa, the capital of
Ethiopia, is suffering from lack of effective solid waste management.
Condominium housing is a new phenomenon in Addis Ababa in particular and in
Ethiopia in general, it is being widely applicable, and large number of
condominium houses are currently under construction. Primary data were
collected via questionnaires, interview, and field observations. Whereas the
secondary data were extracted from different published and unpublished
materials. Both primary and secondary sources were used to achieve the
objectives. The analysis of this study was carried out using both qualitative and
quantitative techniques. The result of the study revealed that the factors
contributing to the ineffectiveness of solid waste management basically rely on
three major causes: lack of awareness and training based on a study, lack of
law enforcement and lack of resource and man power.
