Abstract
This study aim is to explore how “Yemechesh” program has framed women’s issues
before women step in to high political positions and after they are in higher
positions. The objective of the study is to assess to what extent the “Yemechesh”
program have change their framing of women’s issue after the increase of women in
political power in Ethiopia. The research tries to identify the dominant gender frames
used in Sheger FM “Yemechesh” women’s program with in the two years specific
time of period. Before Dr. Abiy Ahmed´s ascendance as Prime Minister of Ethiopia
starting from March 20 17 up to March 2018 and after Dr. Abiy Ahmed appointed as
Prime Minister of Ethiopia from April 2, 2018 until April2, 2019.The general
objective of the study to assess to what extent the “Yemechesh” program have change
their framing of women issue after the increase of women participation in political
power in Ethiopia, the study questioned mainly how does the program frame women
issue?.The research approach is qualitative in nature and employed content analysis
and in-depth interview techniques. The content analysis included 12 recorded and
transmitted “Yemechesh” programs together with in depth interviews conducted with
two program producers and one editor, with the program consultant.The theoretical
aspect of this study is derived from the media framing theory. Including and excluding
of information and source is the major point on this study.
A key finding in this study was that “Yemechesh” program coverage of women in
higher position is low. The journalist’s effort to bring women in higher position in to
the programs is less. These contribute for the low coverage of women in higher
political position. The researcher concludes, that the women in higher position their
interest to use media as a platform was low. The fear of being misquoted and
misrepresented by media contributed to low coverage. The study recommends, the
media have to approach and use women politicians as a source of information.
