Women’s Roles in Armed Conflict and Post-Conflict in Peace Building: the Case of Hargeisa-Somaliland

Abstract
In conflict and post-governance settings, the international community operates with the Women, 
Peace, and the roles of the peace processes on supporting gender equality. In Somaliland since 
the 1988-1991, gender identities and roles have undergone substantial changes, which influenced 
by contemporary political systems, the women‟s movement and civil war transformations. The 
Study illustrates the gap that exists between Somaliland men and women documentation and 
recognizing the local realities by focusing on Women‟s Roles in Armed Conflict and Post Conflict in peace building: The Case of Hargeisa-Somaliland. 
In addition (mixed approach) qualitative and quantities research approaches were implemented. 
Moreover, concerning random selection, 145 close and open ended questionnaires were 
distributed in the study area. Focus Group Discussion, with 20 employee, and semi-structured 
interviews with selected concerned leaders was implemented. Accordingly the findings of the 
study reveal that the role of Somaliland women during the conflict period 1988-1991 was 
participated in difference forms such as delivering moral support to the men, facilitating basic 
services like cooking food and providing medical services, and women in Somaliland 
substantially participated fully. In addition the study indicated that there is major challenge that 
women in Somaliland faces, like the perception to be employee, shortage and problem of 
finance, the perception because they are female, lack of capacity of women, cultural barriers and 
values of women inside the Somali community, the dominant of male in leadership positions, all 
these dynamics are the obstacle to Somaliland women. Meanwhile the study attempts to forward 
some possible recommendations, include, recognizing and documenting the difference roles that 
were played by the women since the conflict and post-conflict periods to encourage in their 
future roles.
