Item The Impact of School Feeding Programme on Students Academic Performance: The Case of Selected Elementary Schools in Debre Libanos Wereda, Oromia Region(Addis Ababa University, 2015-06) Assefa, Ermias; Tefera, DanielThe purpose of this study is to investigate if the school feeding program has significant impact on students’ school performance specifically on students’ achievement Test score and students’ class attendance rates among primary school children in Debre Libanos Woreda. A mixed method research design specifically sequential explanatory approaches was employed and a combination of qualitative and quantitative data collected. The data sources for the research were both primary and secondary. The primary data were collected from school administration of 423 students (195 from treatment and 228 from Controlled groups) using structured questionnaire. Content analyses, Key Informant Interviews and Observation were the methods employed to collect both primary and secondary data. The analysis employed both descriptive and inferential statistics. The independent sample t-test statistics revealed that there was a statistically significant difference between the treatment and control group on attendance rate (t= p < 0.01) but the two groups of students were not different in their achievement test score (t=p>0.10) using independent sample t-test. Thus, the possible explanation is that SFP is a fundamental instrument to increase academic performance specifically on students’ school attendance rate.Item Monitoring and Evaluation of Projects in Government Organizations: - Expectations and Practices: The Case of the Ministry of Mining and Geological Survey of Ethiopia(Addis Ababa University, 2007-07) H/Mariam, Ermias; Tefera, DanielThe research project set out to identify the gap between expectations and practices of Monitoring and Evaluation system in Ministry of Mines (MoM) and Geological Survey of Ethiopia (GSE). (MoM and GSE are established to improve development of the mineral resources in order to enhance the contribution of the Foreign Currency earnings of the sector in the national economic growth of the country.) Data for the study is collected using the questionnaire and detail interview. The result of the study shows that the projects implemented by these two organizations was not effectively monitored and evaluated; the study also showed that the organizations have many challenges to implement the system of M&E. The four groups of the research participant’s namely management, M&E experts and project team leaders have very good expectations from the M&E system. The present study aimed at the investigation of the effects of some of these noncognitive variables on college academic performance of our students. More specifically, the purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between personality types, academic achievement motivation, status on admission and academic performance of college students. A separate and combined effect of each of the independent variable on academic performance was scrntinized. Two hundred thirty nine second year diploma students of KCTE were selected randomly. Data on personality variables and academic achievement motivation were obtained from MPI and AAM Self-Report inventory administered to these subjects. Students' personal documents and academic records were consulted in order to get data concerning status on admission and academic performance. Data were analyzed using chi-square test of independence, analysis of ....... variance, and stepwise regression analysis. The results of statistical analysis indicated that both personality dimensions (Introversion/Extraversion and Stability -Neuroticism) and personality types (stable introversion, stable extraversion, unstable introversion, and unstable extraversion) failed to have significant relationshop with CGPA of the subjects. Above average academic achievement motivation is found to be a factor in academic success. Status on admission is also found to affect academic excellence where the nonregulars were found to be inferior in their academic performance and as well as in their academic achievement motivation. Taken as a whole personality types, academic achievement motivation, and status on admission are found to have significant relationship with first year CGPA of the subj ects. Since the result of this study signals to the educationalists as to the importance of noncognitive variables, further research aimed at investigating the importance of noncognitive variables in the process of education is recommended.Item Postpartum Depression and Associated Factors Among Mothers: The Case of Nifas Silk Lafto Sub City Woreda 1 and 2 Health Centers(Addis Ababa Univerisity, 2016-06) Teshome, Habrasa; Tefera, DanielThe purpose of this study is to determine the prevalence and associated factors of postpartum depression among mothers in Nifas Silk Lafto Sub City, Woreda 1 and 2 health centers. Participants were recruited from the postnatal clinic at Nifas Silk Lafto Sub City, Woreda 1 and 2 health centers. Eligible participants were approached and requested to consent voluntarily to participate in this study. Data was collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed using SPSS version 20.0 software. A total of 300 postnatal mothers were recruited in this study but 295 were analyzed. This study found a prevalence of postpartum depression at 45th day since delivery at 27.8% using K-10 score. 34% of the postnatal mothers were aged between 26-32 years. 82% were married and 27.8% were high school complete. 78% were not in any form of employment. 39.8% were primigravida or first time mothers.33.6% pregnancy was unplanned. Unemployment (r=0.8,P< 0.001), parity (r=0.7,P< 0.01), Income (r=0.7,P< 0.0001) and social support (r=0.7,P< 0.001) were statistically significantly associated with Postpartum Depression. No significant statistical association between Infant sex (r=0.48,P<0.05) and postpartum depression was found. It is important for the public to be aware of the magnitude of the postnatal depression. Health professionals are to be trained in this field to be able to recognize the symptom of postpartum depression, Routine screening of postnatal mothers and ministry of health is to formulate policies integrating mental and reproductive health
