Item Opportunities and Challenges of Volunteer ism as a Human Capital for Community Development. The case of Mesret Humanitarian Organization, Young Women Christian Association and Volunteer Service Over Seas- Ethiopia.(Addis Ababa University, 2013-06) Tegenie, Mesfin; Shiferaw, Tesfaye (PhD)The resea rch dealt with opportunities and challenges of volunteer ism as a human capital for co mmunity development in three se lected Civil Society Organizations in Addis Ababa. The researcher employed qualitative me th od of researc h design. Primary data was collected through conducting intervi ew and focus gro up discussion with 15 vo lunteers which were se lected pupu siv e ly . Besides, various relate d literature s rev iewed to gather rel eva nt information on the s ubject area. The data was analyzed throug h adopting qualitative data analysis procedures. The findings of the stud y indicated that there are vario us opportunities to utili ze volunteers for community development interventions . Be s ide s, there are also different <;hallenges which became an o bstacle to enhan ce volunteering activit ie s in the community. Flilthennore, findings of th e re sea rch showed that volunteers in the se lected civil soc iety organizations were attracte d in volunteering activities because of reaso ns such as mental sati sfac ti o n, personal development, sa ti sfaction attained as a result of providing se rvice for community. Rega rdin g contributions of vo lunt eers , the findnigs of th e re search showed that kn ow led ge, sk ill a nd experiences of volunteers playa greater role in development interve nti o ns. The iss ue of promotion of vo lunteeri sm found to be in adequately promoted and enhanced. Manageme nt of volunteers was also taken in to account and henc e it is found to be put in place and there is we ll mana gement of volunteers. In conclusion, the findin gs of the re search revea led that th ere are oppOitunities for volunteering activities which se rve for community deve lopm ent intervent ion s if the existing c ha ll e nges are tackeled.Item Reflecti ons on the Practical Life Expe ri ence of Ethi opian Domes tic Workers in the Middle Ea st Countries: A case study of Return ees in Addis Ababa cit y(Addis Ababa University, 2013-09) Ayana, Abate; Shiferaw, Tesfaye (PhD)The objective of this research is to assess the practical life experience of Ethiopian Domestic workers in the Middle East countries. The research is basically done by gathering information from Ethiopian returnees from these countries. This study is an explorative analysis and the methodology combines both quantitative and qualitative type of data and information. It employs both primary and secondary sources of data. The data collection methods include document review, opinion survey and interview. The study area is Addis Ababa city and accordingly one hundred and five returnees who live in Addis Ababa city were selected tlu·ough Snow Ball sampling and given the chance to fill self administered questioners. The data obtained analyzed through percentages and summarized form in order to reflect the respondent's response in organized manner. The study has revealed that, Ethiopian domestic workers faced many problems in the Middle East countries. In these countries, they are exposed to abuse of their human rights including detention, rape, bodily injuries and others. In the extreme situations they lose their life. In addition, they faced overwork and nonpayment of their salary by the employers. In addition to thi s, absence of legal protection and support from the agencies and Ethiopian embassies are central problems. The cumulative effect of all these factors also results a big deviation between expectations and achievements on the side of these Ethiopian domestic workers. The study has come up with recommendation that should be taken at all levels. Accordingly, domestic workers must use legally recogni zed agencies while they plan their journey to these countries, maintain strong and close relationship with Ethiopian embassies/consular offices, government follow up and control of illegal agencies, negoti ation with host countries when problems arise are some of the policy implications of the paper.
