Abstract
The resea rch dealt with opportunities and challenges of volunteer ism as a human capital for
co mmunity development in three se lected Civil Society Organizations in Addis Ababa. The
researcher employed qualitative me th od of researc h design. Primary data was collected
through conducting intervi ew and focus gro up discussion with 15 vo lunteers which were
se lected pupu siv e ly . Besides, various relate d literature s rev iewed to gather rel eva nt
information on the s ubject area. The data was analyzed throug h adopting qualitative data
analysis procedures. The findings of the stud y indicated that there are vario us opportunities
to utili ze volunteers for community development interventions . Be s ide s, there are also
different <;hallenges which became an o bstacle to enhan ce volunteering activit ie s in the
community. Flilthennore, findings of th e re sea rch showed that volunteers in the se lected
civil soc iety organizations were attracte d in volunteering activities because of reaso ns such as
mental sati sfac ti o n, personal development, sa ti sfaction attained as a result of providing
se rvice for community. Rega rdin g contributions of vo lunt eers , the findnigs of th e re search
showed that kn ow led ge, sk ill a nd experiences of volunteers playa greater role in
development interve nti o ns. The iss ue of promotion of vo lunteeri sm found to be in adequately
promoted and enhanced. Manageme nt of volunteers was also taken in to account and henc e it
is found to be put in place and there is we ll mana gement of volunteers. In conclusion, the
findin gs of the re search revea led that th ere are oppOitunities for volunteering activities
which se rve for community deve lopm ent intervent ion s if the existing c ha ll e nges are
tackeled.
