Item Analysis of Amharic Talk Show Content and Format Reform of Ethiopian television(Addis Ababa University, 2019-06) Muhie, Seid; Meshesha, Nigussie (PhD)Since its invention in 19th and 20th-century television has passed through different stages. The television broadcast its content in different formats of news and news programs. One of the widely known television genres is a talk show program. The beginning of talk show programs has more than four decades of ages. In Ethiopia, since the beginning of television transmission, various television formats were implemented. Among the television programs, the talk show program history was limited to outsource producers for a long period of time, which means Ethiopian television was not produced in house talk show programs for a long period of time due different reseasons. But recently, the station began to give attention for talk show program, hence ten talk show programs are broadcasting in Ethiopian Television presently. Ethiopian television talk show programs have four types such as one to one, one to few, one to many and phone in. These programs have their own feature of presentation, target group, setting, background, and identity. This study is conducted to find out how these talk show program contents and formats are implemented based on their standard. Opportunities for having talk show program formats especially in addressing public issues, opening debate and discussion for the public, for entertaining various opinions, ideas, views have been discussed and analyzed. The general objective of this study is analyzing content framing and format implementation of Ethiopian television Amharic talk show programs. To make this study both quantitative and qualitative method was deployed specifically data analysis and in-depth Interview respectively. For data analysis of content statistical package for social scientist (SPSS) is used. purposive sampling is used for the qualitative approach of an indepth interview. Generally, the finding of the study indicated and most of the respondents agreed that the presence of talk show programs and the designed formats are good and enables to make the audience active participant express their various views and ideas in the selected topic either in recorded or in live talk show programs and also the shows are vital in attracting the audience . The study results also show that even if the formats and the contents are good in addressing the public issue there is a problem, which can be expressed in different forms such as hosting the shows in a standard, planning, lack of preparation, time usage, and production quality. The study also revealed that there are internal and external challenges that hinder the show to produce in its standard. Most respondents indicated that these problems have to be solved and serious action is needed by the station to implement fully the standard of the shows as well as content framing issues within the perspective of the public.Item Assessment on Public Relations Campaign Communication Practices and Challenges at Ethiopian National Blood Bank Service in Addis Ababa(Addis Ababa University, 2019-06) Melaku, Andualem; Meshesha, Nigussie (PhD)The demand for blood and blood products are public health concerns for healthcare systems throughout the globe, including Ethiopia. However, the supply for them shows a noticeable gap. The purpose of the study intends to assess practices and challenges of PRs Campaign Communication at ENBBS in Addis Ababa. It employed descriptive mixed methods research which involved both quantitative and qualitative research methods to collect quantitative data from 252 sample respondents and 63 informants, respectively. For this purpose, the researcher used structured questionnaires for conducting the survey, while interview guides for semi-structured interviews and checklist for FGDs, and documentary analysis template for documentary analysis of those relevant documents and materials. Quantitative data was analyzed using SPSS software, and thematic and content analysis techniques were employed to the respective qualitative data. Findings of the reveal that Institute had gap in designing and implementing both short-term and long-term PR research-based campaign strategies for proficiently selecting, implementing and distributing blood donation messages targeted to raise knowledge, inform attitudes and motivate behaviour change, through the controlled media tools; the existing BDCs were excessively and partially focused at a very few sections of the greater mass, which were mainly communities of schools, football teams, and religious groups. Practices of PRs blood donation campaign communication at ENBBS are not also given due attention by the management, lack of basic input resources, not planned based on research-inspired approach, and the communication used text and audiovisual messages which were not well-organized and tailored to potential audiences. However, ENBBS employed TV, radio, various events, brochures, leaflets, t-shirts and caps and other tools to communicate voluntary blood donation campaigns. These efforts were undertaken with some encountered challenges like shortage of skilled manpower and resources and lack of implementing research-inspired PR strategies. Finally, it recommends employment of professionals in PR Department, allocation of adequate resources, use of appropriate and audience-friendly communication tools, and preparation of all messages based on research findings.Item A Comparative Study on the Organizational Communication and Public Relations Practices of Two Ethiopian Public Universities: Addis Ababa and Jijiga Universities(Addis Ababa University, 2019-06) Nigussie, Zemedkun; Meshesha, Nigussie (PhD)This study was designed to be conducted on the organizational communication and public relations practices of two Ethiopian public Universities. In this case, Jijiga and Addis Ababa Universities were selected for the study. Purpose of this study was to show what the organizational communication and public relations practices of higher learning institutions seem, especially in different generation Universities. Therefore, this study focused on comparatively studying the organizational communication and public relations practices of Addis Ababa and Jijiga Universities. Exploratory research design was employed as it helps to get a deeper insight in to the problem under study. Samples were taken through using both questionnaire and interview methods of data collection. The two Universities Journalism and Communications instructors, communication directors and team leaders were purposively chosen and stakeholders of the two Universities were selected by using systematic random sampling technique. By analyzing the data collected from 90 respondents and four informants, the researcher has found out that the two Universities public relations practices are not as effective as they are supposed to be. According to the findings, the communication directorates of the two Universities do not have internal trust and are considered less important to the Universities. However, the Universities’ public relations practices from the stakeholders’ side was seen highly helpful and satisfying. Generally, the finding of the study has shown that Addis Ababa University’ External Relations, Partnerships and Communications Directorate and Jijiga University’s Corporate Communication Directorate, according to this finding, were effective in communicating their external stakeholders, but have shown gaps in addressing their internal stakeholders.Item The Practices of Crisis Management and Communication the Case of National Disaster Risk Management Commission of Ethiopia(Addis Ababa University, 2019-06) Ambaw, Bayush; Meshesha, Nigussie (PhD)This main aim of the study was to assess the practice of public relations in crisis management and communication of the Federal Republic Ethiopian National Disaster Risk Management Commission. And the study specific objectives were identifying the roles played by public relations directorate of the National Disaster Risk Management Commission of Ethiopia, analyzing the methods be used by the National Disaster Risk Management commission public relations practitioners in crisis communication and management, investigating the general organization structure and the place of the public relations directorate in the way to meet organizational goals and objectives and in the handling crisis communication and management practices, and identifying the challenges and problems of the commission in working towards crisis management and communication suggest possible solutions. Also the researcher has used descriptive research design and mixed research approaches, that is, qualitative and quantitative research method. And the student researcher collected the data by using two types of questionnaires, it means from NDRMC employee and selective stakeholders organizations. Besides, it used observation together with interview as research tools. In the interview five key informants are included in the study. Also the researcher distributed 152 questionnaires for respondents taken as sample populations and but managed to collected 122 (80%) of questionnaires from the total. 33 questionnaires from five selective stakeholders of the commission are also considered. And also the researcher used observation as a data collection tool and the researcher has prepared an observation check list, and then observed some elements of the commission. Finally, the study found out that the commission’s public relations did not practice in professional sense and also the PR directorate had no managerial role and it merely had technical role. Also the commission has lacked strategic and scientific research based crisis management and communication activity. Key Words Crisis Communication Crisis Management Public RelationsItem The Role of Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation (EBC) in Democratizing the 2014/15 National Election.(Addis Ababa University, 2018-06) Bekele, Selemon; Meshesha, Nigussie (PhD)It is known that the government of any country is expected to be democratic. Democracy is very essential for the wellbeing, peace development and stability of citizens. In a democratic set up the role of media is found to be central. Media plays a great role by providing the necessary information in a democratic society. With all this idea, this study focused on the role of EBC in democratizing the 2014/15(2007) national election and also aims at finding out what challenges this media faced to play this important role expected from it. Qualitative research approach was employed to conduct the study. In depth interview and discourse analysis data collection method were used to gather data in order to address the research objective. Social responsibility, the public sphere, framing, discourse analysis theories were used as theoretical framework to inform the study. The final finding of the study indicated that EBC is not properly practiced the democratic roles that are expected to play in the election. For this, internal and external challenges are identified. The internal challenges are poor level of journalistic professionalism, and institutional poor performance. The external challenges are the high influence and interference of government officials. The paper has also tried to see the relationship between EBC and political parties. The paper identifies the relationship is unfriendly. Therefore EBC could not properly cover 2015(2007) national election. Even the time of pre- election process the debate between political parties was not transmitted live. When they were debating the time allocated to opposing political parties was limited. It was not enough to express their idea, so the attempt that EBC tried to make the election democratic was very weak.Item Strategic Communication Practices of Ethio-Telecom and Ethiopian Electric Utility: A Comparative Study.(Addis Ababa University, 2019-06) Hyelom, Lensa; Meshesha, Nigussie (PhD)In organizations, communication plays a pivotal role for the success of employees and to meet the objectives and goals of the organization. Organizational communication is a combination of internal and external communication. Hence, internal communication refers to communication that tries place among employees of the organization; it includes formal, informal, vertical, horizontal and diagonal communications also external communication deals with communicating external customers through different channels of communication. The study was determined assessing the organizational strategic communication practice of Ethio telecom and Ethiopian Electric Utility head offices found in central Addis Ababa. Thus, to achieve the general objective of study itspecifically focuses on finding out the strategic communication practices in the organizations, assessing organization strategic communication in the management of the organization, examining the level of employees participation on the strategic communication practices in the organization, and identifying the challenges and problems in strategic communication practices of two organizations. Accordingly,the study was under taken in the form of comparative study with essentially combining qualitative and quantitative research approaches and the data was collected, namely, through survey questionnaires and in-depth interview. Totally, 102 questionnaires were distributed for the two organizations 50 for Ethio telecom and 52 for EEU based on systematic random sampling by taking every nth of the population of three departments each, which are highly related to the practices of strategic communication. Thus, the study found out that the organizations communication function and their activities only use a very small proportion of communication activities focusing mainly on technician role except that the section manager of corporate communication is not part of the grand coalition of Ethio telecom whereas in EEU, the corporate communication director is part of the management, but less functional. The other finding is that the organizations attempt to apply system theory and human resource approach but that is not effectively done in both organizations.However, the study found out that Ethio telecom is more effective in organizational strategic communication practice than Ethiopia Electric Utility.
