Corporate Social Responsibility and the Prospects for Community Development: the Case of LG Electronics ' Community Development Project in Dngdcdera Village
(Addis Ababa University, 2014-06) Degie, Bruk; Kebede, Wassie (PhD)
By tak ing the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) community development project of LG Corporation that is being implemented in Dugdedhera as a case, thi s study ex plores the role of CSR to community development. Dugdedhera is a rural village located in Kombole Kebele of the Bereh Woreda ofFinfinee Surrounding Special Zone of Oromia Regional State. It is loca ted 66 K.M north of Addi s Ababa. The study primarily employs the experiences of the beneficiaries to uncover the potential of CSR to community development. In-depth interviews, FGD and keyinformant interviews were the techniques of data coll ection that were used in th is study to find out the experiences, complaints and satisfactions of the members of the community towards the CSR community development proj ect. A total of twenty four pat1icipants were engaged in this study; fourteen for in-depth interviews, e ight for FGD participants and two key informants. The findings of the study indicate that the LG's Corporate Social Responsibility Proj ect is tuned to the rea li ties and needs of the community there by reflecting a deviation from the mainstream CSR agenda. The project is a multi-level community development proj ect comprised of different initiatives including income improvement initiatives, educational initiative and hea lth and hygiene initiative. The study further indicated that CSR initiatives can be moulded to attend to the needs and co ntex ts of the local communities of developing nations. Bes ides, the study also shows that CSR can be an important force for community development in developing nations where governments find it difficult to meet the social governa nce needs of local communities. However, the study proved that the role of the government in creating an enabling environment and that of the local gove rnments' (Wereda admi ni stration) role to follow up the implementation of the project has gene rally been ve ry low. Effects and outcomes of Community Care Coalitions on Child Protection in Gullele Sub- City woreda 3, Addis Ababa
(Addis Ababa University, 2018-10) Temesgen, Hermela; Kebede, Wassie (PhD)
This study aims to assess the results a community care coalition (CCC) has brought on the lives of vulnerable and orphan children in Gullele Sub- City woreda 3, Addis Ababa. The research is conducted under the constructivist paradigm. The research is a qualitative study exploring the effectiveness of community care coalitions for child protection through a single case study design with exploratory nature. The unit of analysis was community care coalition with a case of “community care coalition at gullele sub city woreda 3.” Purposive, nonprobability sampling was employed to collect data from vulnerable children, coalition members, households and concerned higher institutions. The target population of the study is CCC members and beneficiaries. It engaged beneficiaries of the CCC and members and organizers of the coalition through in-depth interviews, key informant interviews and focus group discussions based on different inclusion criteria for each group. The researcher’s observation and review of different documents are the other sources of data for the research. To analyze all the data collected, the study followed the coding approach. On the coding stage those summarized data that are collected through those five data collection methods used, were summarized under four codes to make the data clearer for discussion. The study identified that services delivered for the beneficiaries have brought positive impact on the lives of beneficiary OVCs at different levels. Based on their level of effectiveness the study classified services in to three: as effective, less effective and not effective or not well implemented. The study has also identified that different strategies followed by the coalition contributed for its effectiveness. However, there are also limitations in properly implementing those strategies, which could help a lot for the coalition’s success. On the other hand, the CCC faces different challenges, which are hindering it from achieving its maximum efficiency. The study recommends the CCC to strengthen its resource mobilization techniques so that it could diversify and strengthen the services delivered for OVCs. It could also strengthen services like counseling and health care through revising its strategies. Diversifying its members directly affects those two services. Therefore, the study recommends the CCC to go through the implementation techniques of the strategies.

Pre and Post-divorce Experience of Men Who have Taken Child Custody in Addis Ababa
(Addis Ababa University, 2015-07) Debebe, Afomia; Kebede, Wassie (PhD)
The main objective of this study is to understand how divorced men perceive and explain their pre and post-divorce family life experiences. The methodology fo llowed is qualitative research with specific method of phenomenology that helped the researcher to understand the lived experience of research participants. The participants have been purposively selected from the concluded divorce cases at Lideta Supreme Court. Data has been gathered through face-to-face in-depth interview and analyzed by applying a rigorous data analysis procedure. The findings revealed that, the divorced men have experienced social, economic, emotional, and psychological problems. After the divorce, adjustment to the new status, raising children, social participation, assuming new role in the family have been found to be among the major challenging experience of participants. Men had no easy life after divorce and that has to be the focus of research and program intervention. The coping mechanisms used included personal determination to work hard and overcome the problems, religion and hope about the future, mobilizing support from the environment, optimism about making things better for the children, and the belief and commitment that they can raise the children alone. Based on the fi ndings, it has been able to forward recommendations that professional social work practice is needed at micro and mezzo levels apart from establishing a policy direction at macro level that guides social work practice down the road. Family stability and reduction of divorce could be promoted by wider community awareness and family education programs at the three levels of social work intervention. Further research with a wider scope and coverage should also be conducted on this area in order to have a better understanding about the issue and help families avoid divorce or to help families cope with the impact of divorce and see a better society.
