Professional Theatres(Addis Ababa University, 2001-01) Kassa Wolde; Akalu GetanehTo identifY the quality of a ceria ill drallla is usualiy difficult. The maill reason is Ihat quality is not measurable and basically depelldellt on personal taste or experience. Accordingly, when we consider the drama evaluation activity ill Ethiopian professional Theatres, we could observe lots of arguments and cOlllroversies. However, in spite of its contentious nature, there is no significallt study that treats the issue proper/yo Therefore, the principal objective of the study was to describe and examille Ihe lIIain f eatures of the drama evaluation practice in the theatres. Accordingly, the sludy was lIIaillly cOllcerned with identifYing the ways alld approaches used to select scripts for productioll. III this regard, the study allempted to consider the available theoretical concepts, which are thought to be helpful to compare and contrast the drama evaluation trend in Ethiopia with other approaches. Similarly, those related lileratures that nudge the issue of drallla evaillalion activity in Ethiopia are included to indicate and represent the differences and arglllllellis Ihat have been forwarded in relation to this activity. The analysis in chapter Ih ree cOllsisted the results of a survey carried out by the researcher on the main traits of Ihe drallla evaluation practice in the theatres. Thus, primarily it allempted to make some descriptive assesslllent on the development of the drama evaluation activity to give a preliminary insight and backgroulld information. The next section considered the issue of the standards, which were being set to evaluate scripls. The issue of applying a standard is controversial in such a way that one group allests the importance of specified criteria that constitute a standard to dislinguish a good play ji-om the bad ones. On the other hand, there is another group that substantiales the impediment of any standard for innovative works and demands its rejection. Th e study Iried to show the impacts of these contradictDlY ideas on the development of theatre ill Elhiopia. The other two sections discussed the issue of evaluators and analysis of the debates arolllld Ihe drama evaluatioll practice. The intention was 10 recount the main problems concerning Ih e evaluatioll activity. The discussions on the sample case studies were intended to prove Ihe flaws alld outcomes of the evaluation reports. The results of the study indicated that drama evaluation activity in Ethiopiall professional theatres faced a lot of problems. These problems are mainly due to the way the theatres are organized, the applied slandards, and the way evaluation COlllmillees worked. The study also forwarded some suggestions Ihal ill elude the reorganization of the theatres, the establishment of a position of a permallelll professional evaluator with defined duty and accountability, alld the avoidance of applying a cerlain stalldard to evaluale ali types of plays. As the study is believed to be an incipiellt attempt ill Ihis area, the suggestiolls forwarded were intended to initiate new ideas and approaches to Ihe mores of theatres.Item The Malka': Its Major Features and Source(Addis Ababa University, 2000-06) Gezahegn Getachew ; Akalu GetanehThe Maika' is a Complimentary Ga'az poetry on various religious Subjects. These Subjects could be Divine beings, Angels, Saints, Ecclesiastic objects and abstract ideas. It is almost anonymous and its time of beginning and cessation is unknown for certainty. It has five-line stanzas with identical end rhyme. The structure of each stanza is categorized into three: description, call and supplication. Mostly the first two lines are description of the different parts of the body; the third line is a call and the last two lines are supplication of the suppliant. Some of the Malka'a maika' also have stanzas of invocation. The imagery in the Maika' is frequently biblical and rarely non- biblical that is used for didactic purpose and omamenting. Regarding its origin, the Holy Bible, particularly the Song of songs, has influenced it. Thematically and structurally, its imagery is highly similar to the Song of songs in terms of its nature of praise and supplication. The Maika' uses identical descriptors for identical palts of the body, similar descriptor~ and allusions for the Song of songs in palticular and the Holy Bible in general. Since the Song of songs is earlier in its appearance, it can safly be said that the Maika' must have been influenced by the Song of songs. Based on comparative textual study between the Malka'a maika' and the Song of songs in particular and the Holy Bible in general, the possible origin of the Maika' must be the Holy Bible. The Maika' and the Song of songs are similar in their basic form: description of the different P31ts of the body, praise and supplication. The organization, phrasing and imagery of the Malka'a maika' are similar to that of the Song of songs. The use of explicitimplicit reference to the Song of songs, identical descriptors for identical parts of the body with the Song of songs, similar descriptors with the Song of songs, and allusions from the Old and the New Testaments indicate that the possible origin is the Holy Bible, particularly the Song of songsItem Narrative Time Analysis in Tä'ammaRä Maryam(Addis Ababa University, 2003-07) Zenebe Desta ; Akalu GetanehTä'ammarä Maryam is a corpus of narratives about the miracles performed by Virgin Mary. Although it is popular among the laity of the Ethiopian Tewahido Orthodox Church, after being introduced in the mid of the 15th century, it has not been investigated from the point of view of modern Narrative Theory. Aimed at analyzing the narrative time of the Tä'ammarä Maryam that contains the collection of recent miracles, this study discusses some features of the text. Setting, significance of miracles and the categories are among the features of the text considered . The analysis of narrative time: order, duration and frequency, is mainly based on the relevant theory by Gerard Genette and Shlomith Rimmon-kenan. The analysis of order showed that there a chorological presentation of events. The examination of the duration of events in the narratives indicated that scenic representation is in the form of prayer and prescriptive utterance. Acceleration is found in the episodes that orients the story and in the group of miracles about the prophecies of Virgin Mary. Pause in the story is prevalent only to exalt St. Mary while ellipsis is not in the stories. Singulative telling is common in the stories while repetitive narration is absent in a story but there are nine events that are recurrent in the corpus of stories Tä'ammmrä Maryam. As a whole the analysis of narrative time indicates that each miracle is structured from a perspective to create a single effect on the mass that hears /reads/ it. This effect is persuading to honor and believe in the intercessory role of Virgin Mary-as owed by Her Son, Christ.Item Some Selected Poems in English by Ethiopian Poets: a Stylistic Analysis(Addis Ababa University, 2002-08) Abeba Amare ; Akalu GetanehThis study is concerned with a stylistic analysis of some selected English poems of three poets; namely Tsegaye G/Medhen, Solomon Deressa and Eyasu Gorfu. This research focuses on how these poets communicate their ideas through language choices. Therefore, the central purpose of this thesis is to explore the language use of the poets and find out how the language conveys meanings in each given poem and bring out the recurrent themes in each poet's work. The method adopted in this study is a stylistic approach. Thus, noting and examining unique features of the poems and their relationships as central too stylistic approach, the analysis of the poems has been systematically carried out. The other aim of this study is to reveal the effectiveness of the stylistic analysis approach in bringing out meaning of the poems and arriving at valid interpretation of literary texts. This thesis has four chapters. The first chapter is a general introduction of the research work. The second chapter surveys different critical reviews and theses related to this research. The third chapter offers an overview of the concepts in focus i.e. it discusses the concepts of style, stylistics and the basic framework of stylistic analysis, which are the analytical tools in the stylistic analysis of the selected poems. The last chapter, which is chapter four deals with the actual analysis of the selected poems. Thus, in section one the poems of Tsegaye G/Medehen are examined with the framework of stylistic analysis. In the second section Solomon Deressa's poems are analysed through the same method and in the third section the poetry of Eyasu Gorfu are scrutinized. In the final section, which is the conclusion part, the findings of the researcher are briefly presented.
