Item The Prevalence of Domestic Violence in Pregnant Women Attending Antenatal Care at the Selected Health Facilities in Addis Ababa(Addis Ababa University, 2013-10) Abdurashid, Ruman; Tesfahun, HaileMichael (PhD)Domestic Violence (DV) is most prevalent in every sector of society, but less recognized and poorly addressed social stigma. DV is usually expressed in psychological, physical and sexual abuse inflicted by close partners. The objective of this study is to assess the prevalence, factors associated with Domestic Violence, and women perception on violence during pregnancy among currently pregnant women attending Ante Natal Care (ANC). For the purpose of this research, facility based cross sectional study was under taken among 360 pregnant women age 18-49 who came to three health facilities for antenatal visit (one Hospital and two Health Centers) Gandhi Memorial Hospital, Kolfe, and Nefas Silk Lafto Sub City Wereda -3 Health Centers from May13 to 24, 2013. Methodologically quantitative data collection tool were employed using structured questionnaires. Binary descriptive statistics and multivariate analysis were used to analyze the collected data. The finding indicates that the prevalence of violence in life time in one or another form is 109 (31.3%) and 102 (29.3%) during current pregnancy by their partners. The study revealed that undesired pregnancy and alcohol consumption by partner is significantly associated with violence. To conclude, most of the perpetrators of DV is male partners, it is paramount important to create awareness on violence against women via social interaction groups like “Idir” and through formal/informal education and policy makers.
