Item Cross Border Livestock Marketing and Pastoral households’ income: The Case of Harshin Woreda, Somali Regional State.(Addis Ababa University, 2019-06) Abdi, Mohamed; Hassen PhD, AliCross-border trade is a strategy undertaken by people as a coping mechanism to escape poverty. This study examines cross-border livestock marketing and pastoral household income in Harshin district by using primary and secondary data that were collected through structured questionnaire, focus group discussions and key informant interviews with crossborder market participant, (77) and non-participant (78) sampled households. Both descriptive and inferential statistics specially Propensity Score Matching were used to assess the linkage between cross-border market participation and household income in the study area. The study revealed that four among ten model variables, influence the cross-border market participation decision which are educational level, family size, number of livestock owned by the household, and distance to nearest border market place The finding of the study also shows that, broker plays dominant role in marketing channel which is 80% of the chains engaged by the broker for mediating process. Thus, the cross-border livestock marketing had positive and highly significant effect on household income in which 3689.6Birr increment was found due to the cross-border market participation. Generally, the finding of the study suggests that there is a need to scale up the education intervention programs to improve livestock marketing and enhance community awareness towards diversifying their income through cross-border livestock market participation without undermining the role of the government. Shortening the length of the market chain to minimize transaction cost institutional arrangements, policy support and adopting legalized channel against illegal rout is needed.Item Determinants of the Household’s Food Security among Cooperative Members: The Case of Awbere District in Somali National Regional State(Addis Ababa University, 2019-06) Abdi, Mohamed; Semie PhD, NegusseMany governments, donors, and international aid agencies or developmental organizations dispersed millions of dollars for reducing the impact of food insecurity and hunger in developing countries including Ethiopia. One of the dominant tools that help reduce poverty at households’ level is promoting the role of cooperative include food security and hunger. The objective of this study is to examine the determinants of household food security among the cooperatives members based on the data collected from 120 respondents selected randomly in Owbera Woreda, Somali Regional State. The study used both primary and secondary data sources. Primary data was collected through structured questionnaire interview schedule and focus group discussion while Secondary data was collected from reviewing of various documents related to the role of cooperative on food security. A descriptive statistics and econometric model (Binary logit model) were used for the analysis of the data gathered. The result indicates that the status of food security among cooperative members significantly influenced by factors such as age of the household head, education, total livestock owned by the household and sex of the household head. The findings of the study also shows that, households employ arrange of coping strategies during food insecurity including sale of firewood and charcoal and sale of livestock,. Generally the findings of the study suggests that there is a need to improve their educational level by bringing education intervention programs and to improve livestock production and productivity through provision of veterinary drug services, sustainable forage development programs , improving the capacity of community animal health workers . Moreover the study pointed out major problems effecting food security among cooperative members such as low level of cooperative’s performance , climatic shocks, poor rain fall, structural problems , drought and climate change Therefore , cooperative management is recommended to give appropriate attention to make members of cooperative skilled members through training, investing in human capital of the cooperative members and give enough credit facility to improve the performance of cooperative members and to improve their educational level by bringing education intervention programs and to improve livestock production and productivity through provision of veterinary drug services, sustainable forage development programs , improving the capacity of community animal health workers
