Item Factors Affecting Students Academic Performance in Higher Institutions: A Case Study of Business Studies Programs of Bahirdar University(Addis Ababa University, 2008-01) Alamirew, Dilmeta; Wencheko, Eshetu(Prof.)The study was undertaken to identify factors that affect the academic performance of students at BahirDar Uni versity. The sample which is selected using stratified random sampling consists of \36 students (107 male and 29 female) . Twenty-three variables that could possibly affect the academic performance of the students were considered. Data on students past experience, parental economIc and educational background, learning/studying styles/ways and socio-demographic variables like sex, age ... etc were collected using a structured self administered questionnaire. A preliminary analysis was carried out tlu·ough chi-square test and correlation analysis. The combined effect of the explanatory variables was analyzed using stepwise regression analysis. The study revealed that EHEEQE OPA, frustration caused by fear of academic dismissal, lack of smooth interpersonal relationship between teachers and students in the teaching-learning process and whether a student studies alone or in group are the only important factors in affecting student's academic performance, and EHEEQE OPA is the first best predictor of student's academic performance.
