Abstract
This thesis aims to identify demographic, socio economic and psychological determinants for the
family planning services utilization in MOJio town, Oromia region. The study uses both
descril-tive and quantitative techniques. The study is cross- sectional study design. Using
systematic random sampling techniques 551 samples were taken. Data were col/ec{ed {hrough
questionnaires from women of reproduc{ive age (15-49years}.Focus group discussions and key
informant interviews were conduc{ed to obtained quali{ative information on family planning
service utilization. For analysis, {he study uses chi-square test and logistic regression model.
Women were interviewed on knowledge, a{{i{ude and practice of family planning. Knowledge
and approval of family planning was high. 91.5% and 82.2% respectively, bu{ {he practice of
family planning was low. Results showed that only 33.6% ever used anyfamily planning method
and 38.3 were currently using any family planning method at the time of the survey. The
commonest methods for bOlh ever use and current use were injectable, pills and condom. The
commonest source of family planning information was clinics. The logistic model showed that
with jive and above living children, those literate, those approved family planning methods,
discussed with husband/partners and those exposed to mass media have the highest likelihood of
utilizing family planning services. Fertility relmed, opposition, methods reia{ed, and access to
sources and knowledge were the main reasons for non-users. The inJormation obtainedji'om key
informants indicates that the quality of care is also important in influencing the decision by
women to Ulilizefamily planning services. Based on {he results oJthe study the recommendalions
include raising women's education levels, improving their employmenl opportunities, decreasing
the economic, social and psychological value of children and reducing their desire for large
families, educating women on Ihe benejits of family planning and increase male involvement in
family planning programs.
